Greg Lewis for 6

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff June 16, 2009 07:00 AM

FOXBOROUGH – Six questions with receiver Greg Lewis, who joins the Patriots after six seasons with the Eagles:

How much are you watching tape of Jabar Gaffney and how he fit into this offense?
“I haven’t watched Jabar any. I’m not Jabar, so I can’t really look at him. I’m just trying to learn what I’m supposed to do, what the coaches ask me to do, what my teammates expect of me, and I’m going to try go out and do what Greg can do.”

How would you explain what type of offense this is?
“A very versatile offense. You have a lot of guys who can do a lot of different things, and we try to get them the opportunities to do those things they’re capable of. We all have to learn the whole entire offense, first and foremost, and then we’ll take it from there.”

For New England fans wondering ‘Who is Greg Lewis?’ what would you tell them?
“I’m just a run-of-the-mill guy who is coming in and trying to work hard and compete for an opportunity to be on this team and [earn] a roster spot and go out and make plays.”

What are your thoughts on catching passes from Tom Brady?
“Tom is a great guy off the field, and a great guy on the field. But a football is a football to me and whoever throws it to you, your job as a receiver is to catch it.”

What do you think this offense is capable of, specifically in the passing game?
“Right now, we’re not capable of anything. We haven’t come together as a whole unit. We’re just on Day 8 or 9. We have a lot to improve on. We’re building each day.”

How complex is this offense compared to Philadelphia?
“I think every offense has its own nuances and complexities, but it’s tough. The offense in Philadelphia was tough. I’m digging in, trying to learn the best I can.”

(The following interview was from after a practice session last week.)

  1. Being a Philly Pats fan and watching Lewis for the past couple of years. I almost guarantee he gets cut. He was terrible for the Eagles. He drops balls at the ultimate worst time and he never gets open. It really surprised me when the Pats picked him up. I think the only games he played decent was against my Pats. Prediction that rookie WR/QB beats him out,

  1. wow - cross him off the list of interviewees during the real season. if anything, i guess his lack of seeming charisma or need to talk to the press would work in his favor with BB.

  1. Somebody get this kid some Kool-Aid. Somebody call his agent. Somebody get this kid tape of Jabar Gaffney. Somebody get this kid tape of Tom Brady.

Greg, watch the tape so you know what is going to be expected if you are on the field with Moss and Welker. Don't watch the tape to see Gaffney, watch the tape for position expectations.

Watch the tape of the SB w/ Philly. It does matter who is throwing you the ball!

  1. Note to self. Don't take interview lessons from Greg Lewis. "Just a run-of-the-mill guy" LOL. We need him to sit down with Stuart Smalley from Saturday Night Live. Greg, repeat after me: "I'm Good Enough, I'm Smart Enough, and Doggone It, People Like Me!"

  1. Did anyone else's 'knucklehead radar' go off when reading Lewis's answer to the first question? How could he not watch film of the last guy to be productive in the 3rd receiver role? Gaffney beat out Stallworth for that role last year, and the year before I think Gaffney led all playoff receivers for something (receptions?, yards?) Seems to me you'd want to watch some film of Gaffney...

  1. Based on his performance in the OTA/mincamp (relative to other WRs on the team) and reading his interview script, it appears as if he is not going to make the 53 man roster. I think there is good chance Aiken/Edelman would fill 4th/5th WR position.

  1. MIck,
Did you go to OTA and watch Lewis??? I'm curious how you know so much... How much have you watched Edelman to make the statement he is going to make the team as a WR over Lewis. Please fell us all in with your "inside" information.

  1. Some of you are funny. The Patriot way has always been to downplay things and avoid appearing overtly arrogant. That's all he's done. You shouldn't draw attention to yourself off-the-field when you're new and trying to find a place on a team that expects excellence.

As a football player, I admit that I don't know too much about this guy. BB is known for his ability to evaluate talent so we'll see what happens. There are a number of guys who were thought to suck until coming to NE. Let's all hope for the best.

  1. Ryan,
I guess you didn't like my opinion on Lewis/Edelman ? I am just basing it on various blogs/reports that I read. I am not claiming to know anything, that's why I used the words like "I think" "it appears".
Since the training camp does not start for another 6 weeks, let's hear your opinion on the WR situation.

  1. "You shouldn't draw attention to yourself off-the-field when you're new and trying to find a place on a team that expects excellence."

Amen. Plus, even for a Eagle vet, it most be humbling to practice with Moss, Welker, Galloway with a decent shot to join a corps of that calibre.

From what I surmise, his problem has been consistency (ala Gaffney). Pats likely Lewis's best chance to change that perception and extend career with a team where the 4th receiver is more involved than most other offenses.

  1. The man is a born politician. We know his career path after football.

  1. Lewis on the team is about speed opposite Randy and stretching the field to open Welker. He has a shot to make it because he's got that speed and he's a vet. If he can hold onto the ball, he will likely make the team. He did look good against the Pats, just as Welker did before we picked him up.

  1. GREG LEWIS IS A TRUE PROFESSIONAL, HE WILL MAKE THE TEAM, AND HE WILL DO HIS JOB, HE WILL BE A GOOD PERSON IN THE LOCKER ROOM AS WELL!
HE COMES FROM A GREAT FAMILY, HE IS THE FIRST PLAYER FROM HIS HIGH SCHOOL TO HAVE HIS NUMBER RETIRED, HE IS A VERY BRIGHT INDIVIDUAL, HE IS A FAMILY MAN, AND HE LOVES FOOTBALL, HE WILL BE AN ASSET TO THE PATRIOT ORGANIZATION!

  1. Who knew Wes Welker before he came to New England? What was his claim-to-fame prior? Oh, just burning the Pats a few times... sound familiar?
