Rodney Harrison fires away at Peyton Manning

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff June 3, 2009 12:42 PM

Rodney Harrison wasn't kidding about not holding back in his role as a football analyst.

On a conference call today for NBC -- which officially announced Harrison and Tony Dungy as analysts -- the topic of the Colts' assistant coaching issues came up (Tom Moore and Howard Mudd resigned), specifically in how Peyton Manning publicly expressed his frustrations.

Dungy answered first, before Harrison stepped in and said:

"This is something I've discussed with Coach Dungy and I think it gives Tom Brady the edge over Peyton Manning in terms of leadership. If this went on in New England, it wouldn't come out publicly. He wouldn't make a big fuss over it. So many guys are looking up to [Peyton] that once they sense panic, they get nervous. You have to control your emotions and not allow these things to get outside the walls. I have a lot of respect for Peyton Manning, but this is a guy that needs to control his emotions."

Dungy then stepped back in and said, "I'm not sure I would agree it was panic."

To which Harrison responded: "As a player, it's your job to play football. This is OTAs. It's not even minicamp yet. There is no sense of panicking. These things can be worked out. He's been running the same offense for 11 years, it's not like it's new to him. That disappointed me, for him to publicly come out and say things. I thought it was a sense of panic."

  1. Manning is such a baby. He's had the same coaches forever. Tom has gone through so many coaches during his time with the Pats. Manning had the best line, great WR, really good running game during his whole time with the Colts. He's very very lucky. All those years they lost to the pats it was because of the O not because of their d. Look it up.. It's a fact.

  1. Just call'em like you see'um Rodney. I will miss seeing you on the field but cant wait to hear your commentary. You should be a guest blogger here with Mike once a week and let it rip. Mike needs to be PC to stay in the good graces of BB and Co. so Rodney could come in and be what Mike Felger thinks he is. Big difference is that RH would actually have credibility and real world insight to share.

  1. I love it...should make Sunday night football alot more interesting seeing my boy Rodney telling it like it is. That guy was a REAL football player. I loved his edge and nastyness.

  1. Rodney runs his mouth.
Keeping things in house proves you"re a leader?
Being totally subserviant to the coach and organization makes you a leader?
Great opinion Rodney, never speak your mind!
Being a leader is speaking out.
Being a leader is questioning those in charge
Let's follow Rodney's leadership philosophy "be a doormat"

  1. I'll finally watch NBC Sunday nights now if they let Rodney keep this up

Do you have any facts to back that up???
2 coaches is a lot? Charlie and Josh those were Tom's 2 O.C.
    What a moron!

  1. Punchy,

Not whining in the media is what makes a leader. You do realize that these guys can talk to each other without cameras being present....right? Manning is no sort of leader, having called out players in the past, whereas Brady puts forward a professional attitude towards the media and is a "company man" when addressing the public. That's what a leader is: Keeping internal issues internal and not whining to the media when things don't go your way.

  1. You want to see real panic from Manning? Ask him to restructure his contract (down) to allow his team more cap room to sign better players.

Last year's early playoff exit was a portent of things to come for the Colts. Now its time to pay the piper for their misguided roster and cap strategy. I predict a continued decline this season, highlighted by a Pats win in the quiet of Lucas field

RIP the RCA Dome and Colts SB prospects.

  1. Punchy,

Go sniff manning's joke. Ok little man. Do you want me to go through all the coaches the Pats have lost as a staff??? You are a joke. The Colts are done.. Done. The window has shut... Get over it

    Posted by #9 June 3, 09 02:24 PM
  1. Have they figured out how to pump in fake crowd noise in Lucas Field yet like they did at the RCA Dome?

  1. Hey punchy, #9's correct about Manning being the reason why his team didnt win when they played the Pats. If you recall the only reason Manning has a ring is because his defense. The Pats owned Manning for so long he was paying Mass taxes, admit that! As for his O.C.s you're wrong again. Brady's worked under 3 OCs thus far including Bill Belichick the season Charlie Weis left for Notre Dame. In 2003, Charlie Weis focus shifted more to play calling, if you can remember back that far. A new coach by the name of John Hufnagel tookover Qb duties in 2003. 2004 McDaniels took over as QB coach. McD was given the the title of OC in 2006, offically.. As BB acted as OC in 2005. The only consistent factor was BB and Scarnecchia O-line coach.

You really should not have your I.Q. as your user name
You did not say the Patriots as a team you said Tom Brady.
Where are those facts to support your argument?
You're the joke untill you learn to spell
    Rob in Central MA
Are you in the lockerroom listening to these conversations? No.
So for all you know the team says nothing against the coach or team.

To the two of you I 'm a Steelers fan. You know the last Superbowl champs

  1. Hey Punchy, shouldn't you be on some ESPN message board trying to defend the notion why Bob Sanders shouldn't be considered the most overrated player in the NFL? This is great, Rodney takes Bettis' job from NBC and although we have "E.T. Head" Dungy on NBC also, he is going to smack Dungy around whenever he feels the need to put him in his place.

  1. Everybody knows Pay-a-ton is a Beeyoootch!! This is the same guy that said " Our idiot kicker got liquored up and lost the game for us" , the same guy that threw his whole O-line under the bus when he gets sacks the least of any QB in the league, talk about ungrateful, and everytime he is off target , he starts whining and blaming it on the recievers, He is very far from a leader, and Rodney was on point with his comments, of course Dungy is gonna back up the one man that helped get him a ring, hell HE WAS the Coach!, so I dont know why Peyton was mad, he called all the plays and did what he wanted anyway, showing disrespect for authority on numerous occasions, and you want to compare him to our Beloved #12, who has constantly took fault and blame when things obviously could have been blamed on others, NOT Once has he put someone under the bus!!!

Punchy UR a tool, why are u here anyway, ... Answer me that

The point is O.C.'s not Q.B. coaches
Are you talking about the Colts D that gave up record setting rush yards
against in 2 games that season.
If you ever listen to BB he said Josh called the plays even though he didn't
    have the O.C. title.
    Get your facts straight.

  1. Punchy,
Don't you have something better to do with your life.? You are probably out of work and it mom's basement, but try to get the resumes into Buger King. Could not careless about Pitt. The teams does not matter to me at all.
PS: It's been at least 3 different people with Brady.. Does not even take into account D coaches living.

    Posted by #9 June 3, 09 03:23 PM
  1. Punchy,

Job market is poor in Pittsburgh, not much to do but be a troll on the internet. But please don't be offensive to strangers, better that you go and play with your imaginary girl friend, then to make a fool of yourself.

Posted by karnak June 3, 09 03:39 PM
  1. Drew,
You realize that Rodney probably doesn't hate Coach Dungy in actual real life, right? I know it would be nice to live in a world where everyone in the NFL who doesn't get a paycheck from the Patriots is branded with a scarlet D for "disrespecting the Patriots" but it doesn't work that way.

But wait, I thought it was only Red Sox fans who were obsessed with every move their rivals make?

  1. (First: I would like to appologize for my bad english because it's not my native langage)

It's really fun to see you Pats fans (and Colts haters) react about almost nothing. It's normal that a former NFL Player who played mostly in the "SS-KGB-Gestapo" coaching type don't understand that another player express himself the democratic way and even say things that are not under the "official program".

I will say we discover true leaders when it's time to "shaking-the-system" a bit and don't always stand of the official words... In my personnal life, I always prefer to deal with Gandhis or Mandelas than with persons who juste repeat the official words without questionning nothing, relaying on dictator's words. Talking of leaders, where was "beloved #12" in the "spy-gate"? What a true leader should have done when he discover that his coach was cheating? If he shut his mouth... well he is giving the message that he was aware of it wich is really not what a leader might do! You see, one way or the other, there's not a lot of leadership there!

You can say that Manning is sometimes crying and maybe went too far a couple of occasions (but not as often said). But I'll alway prefer a true, honnest leader that is not affraid of talking than a Hollywood kid (with a lot of talent, I don't argu it) working for a dictator.

Don't hesitate to answer me, because I love democraty and I accept that people can have a different opinion and even - yes, even - express this different opinion.

  1. Typical Steelers fan. They win the SB because Brady is out for the season. He isn't comfortable enough with his team being good, and it shows. He still feels he needs to come attack the team he sees as number one. The proof is in every post he makes.

And punchy, Harrison didn't say suck it up and never disagree. He said you air your problems privately, get them resolved, and then do your job. Being a crybaby and whining to the press isn't leadership, it is being a whiny little baby, which is a trend among the Mannings, especially Pay-me-a-ton. The QB needs to be a leader, and set a good example of confidence. What Payton did was sow dissension and makes the other players question their leadership, both the coaches and their QB.

Glad you Steelers got your SB, but I have bad news for you. Brady is back, and we are also improved on both sides of the ball. That is why no one is giving the Steelers much chance of repeating.

Hey, that's my favorite Peyton Manning quote!

Say - where is Mike Vanderjerk now any way?
Ah- I see he's recently requested and been granted release from the storied Toronto Argonauts to spend more time in Florida.

No doubt basking in the glow of his many clutch performances.

  1. didn't brady bruschi and the other leaders supported Belichick? i'm not too sure but i think they gave Bill words of encouragement. plus when Branch was trying to get a contract extension Brady said that he wanted Branch so he doesn't do stuff without questioning it. brady is a better leader and I think even coach dungy agree with harrison on the same thing. It seems like he does believe brady is a better leader but he wouldn't say that Peyton manning panicked("I'm not sure I would agree it was panic."). it pretty much implied that he does believe brady is better. this is coach dungy so it's saying a lot.

  1. Nice....isn't it wonderful to see Rodney Harrison extolling the virtues of leadership, when he is the same guy who got busted for banned substances (aka perfomance enhancers). Nothing could be as selfish and detrimental to the team as to get suspended for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

    Congrats Rodney!

Posted by Jack June 3, 09 07:07 PM
  1. I don't even think Rodney understands what Manning was talking about. If the Pats were still hiring coaches in late May like the Colts were forced to do bc of the pension changes, then who knows how Brady would react considering he's never been in such a situation.

  1. To the very first poster, it is indeed incorrect to state that during all of Peytons time with the Colts that he had a good line and a good running game, in fact, since he was drafted, their has only been 6 pro bowl selections from his offensive line during his entire career, and while he did have marvin harrison throughout his career, it should be noted that over the last several years Marvins production has been near nil, as well as the running game, Joseph Addai is vastly overrated as a running back, last year they had the worst YPC (yards per carry) average in the NFL. It is incorrect and most definately NOT fact to state that he has had the best line and a great running game to support him throughout his career, during several of his seasons with them their Defense was even rated near last in the NFL. He has not always been very lucky.

However, I have to say he is only the best regular season quarterback of the past 10 years. You can talk about leadership all you want. talk is cheap. You have to show leadership on the field especially in the playoffs. They were lucky to win in 2007. I'm glad but I'm not sure Peyton has what it takes to get them another ring. Remember that stupid play vs the chargers in the playoffs last year. 3 yards wins the game. he goes to shotgun no back protection and gets sacked like a wussy.

    Re: Punchy
I'm glad you're cementing the Steelers fans' perception as having "little man" syndrome. Yes, we know they won the Super Bowl last year. Yes, we know they have 6 titles. I also know that both years the Patriots were conspicuously absent in the playoffs as Pittsburgh made their runs. Until the Steelers beat N.E. in the playoffs, your trash talk will fall on deaf ears here. That's why I have more respect for Indy. At least they exorcised their Patriot demons.

    Very appropriate user name.
It's tough to beat a team in the playoffs when that team doesn't even make
the playoffs. Even though that team played the easiest schedule in the NFL.
Not sure about the "little man" syndrome?
Which team has failed the most in the biggest game? N.E. or Pitt.
Pitt 6-1 N.E. 3-3 Don't forget the Pat's had a chance at perfection, were the
Overwhelming favorites and spit the bit in 2008 Superbowl.
As for Rodney being such a great teammate.... he didn't even know Kevin
    O'connel's name

  1. To Steelers fan.... Steelers are a good Team and organization... That being said ...
How did the Pats cheat - by stealing signals? The signals CAN'T be stolen because the folks giving them are in full view to all on the sidelines. The only thing the Pats were guilty of was breaking a rule regarding use of a video cameras on the field. Using video just makes things a bit easier than having to write what you see on a notepad. And how much did it really help them by video taping anyway? The camera was confiscated in the FIRST quarter of the FIRST game of the 2007 season, and the Pats went on to go 16-0. So, enough with the cheating garbage, because it makes you, as a Steelers fan, appear to have an inferiority complex with respect to the Patriots. Just be honest and admit that they've been a great Team this decade.

Payton has had the same offensive Coord and Line coach. THis is the Free agency era and only the Colts have had the same coordinators. Payton Manning is a good regular season QB but NO GOOD in playoffs...DOES ANYBODY KNOW HIS STATS IN PLAYOFFS??? 1. Hey Now, I'm one of the "misinformed fools you refer to".
While you're correct to say P.Manning's quote never included "...lost the game for us", but certainly that was his point, now wasn't it?
The point is that Patriot players, Brady in particular, would never PUBLICLY criticize each other, not even a liquored-up kicker.
    That's a fact.
And that was the only time P.Manning threw his teammates under the bus to the media, now was it?
    Another fact.

Posted by mikeinNH June 4, 09 03:35 PM
  1. Manning is the leader of the Colts and Tom Brady is Belichick's bitch.
Manning has one the best media presences and for him to speak out
about the new coaches should tell you something. Rodney Harrison
could hit......... but it was always late. He is just kissing Brady's butt becasue
he wouldn't have a ring without him. Does it really even matter about
Harrison says about peyton, the colts are my favorite team and will win the
super bowl this year while having the number one defense in the league.
Just like the buccs when Dungy left them. Go Colts.

  1. True. Manning got his ring. True he's upset at all the coaching changes. I'm from the old school. "Keep inside problems inside" The rest of the league doesn't care and it usually only serves to hurt your team. Leaders come in all shapes and sizes.
But until Manning shows me he can do it in the playoffs. (Bradshaw, Montana and yes Brady) he will still be ranked behind Brady and all the all time greats.
