Hobbs defends Patriots
Oft-criticized and always honest former Patriots cornerback Ellis Hobbs doesn't harbor any ill will towards his former team. Hobbs, who was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for a pair of fifth-round picks during the second day of April's NFL Draft, made the rounds of ESPN's headquarters in Bristol, Conn., today and defended his former team.
According to a transcript provided by ESPN, Hobbs was asked by ESPN Radio's Colin Cowherd what the biggest misconception about the Patriots is.
“That we’re all a bunch of jerks, starting with the head man, Bill," said Hobbs. "Bill will be the first to tell you he comes off as a jerk, intentionally. Because, I think, what he tries to manifest throughout the players is that we’re here for football.
“There’s so much going on – the circus in the media and all that stuff, and the hoopla in the NFL these days – it’s hard to keep the focus on the game. I think that’s why they have everything so distinguished, set apart from everything, as far as the organization away from the players. Where there’s only access for the players on the lower level -- the players and the coaches. And I think by him doing that, it kind of sets the tone, and let’s you know that we’re here to play football and win games.”

It's too bad it took him leaving the Patriots to get me to like Ellis Hobbs.
Ah! Always good to hear from Brother Hobbs! I'll particularly miss his refreshingly unfiltered view!
Don't get me wrong: I LOVED the trade to Philly: What many folks don't realize, is that he'd plummeted to 6th ~ SIXTH!!! ~ on the CornerBack Chart, in terms of upside, and, potentially, actual playing time, what with the superior talent of Butler, Wheatley, and Wihlite.
6th most important CornerBack on the team, combined with a $2.5 Salary means you are CUT, gentlemen. In no uncertain terms.
In my mind, I'd already taken the the Salary Cap hit.
So for Coach Bill to actually get out from under his salary AND get a couple 5ths for him was an absolutely beautiful move...and a very underrated one, much like ~ The Escape From Vrabel's Cap Number ~ bit!

But don't get me wrong: Not only do I like Ellis, but I think the Eagles got themselves a nice player.
*By the way, I already have the Eagles pegged for at LEAST a Final Four appearance, this year. We may VERY well see him in Super Bowl 44!
You just can't dislike this guy. Belichick always used to comment that he played bigger than his size. He was always the guy taking on the #1 even when Samuel was in the mix. Not to mention, he was passionate about wanting to win.
you can listen to the whole thing on the AFC East blog
he talks about other patriots stuff too
I would have liked to have seen Wheatley or Wilhite actually leapfrog him on the depth chart before declaring that he'd be 6th. When they had the chance last year, they couldn't. They had all they could do to beat Deltha O'Neal for playing time. Yeah, hopefully the young guys continue to get better, but I think it's way too soon to consider them upgrades over Hobbs.
I think the main reason they traded Hobbs was that he was entering the final year of his contract and they had just signed Bodden to a one year deal. If Bodden was not a Patriot, Hobbs would have remained one. And, IMO, he would have been the frontrunner for the RCB spot, alongside Springs.
Hobbs gave his all for the Pats - played hurt, played ST, covered guys almost a foot taller than him - never gave excuses, never backed down. I would have preferred they keep him as a 3rd CB and KR, but oh well.
Didn't Ellis already do an incredibly similar interview right after he was traded?
I seem to remember him saying how Belichick wasn't concerned about his media image, and that people outisde the Patriot organisationmisunderstood what type of guy he was.
Even though I am a Steelers fan, Ellis Hobbs is just not that good. I think the Patriots have a really good secondary. THey will miss Rodney Harrison leadership back there but they should be fine. Shawn Springs is pretty good but also can play safety. Bodden was good for Cleveland and if he can return to that form, pats get a steal. I dont know too much about Wheatly and Wilhite but I think that rookie Butler could be the steal of draft (on paper). Big fan of Chung, he can play all secondary positions and good tackler in college. Pats just need Pass Rushers on D.....................
Isn't this the same guy all New England fans were bashing after the Pat's got beat by the Fins in week 3?
REALISTIC, you talking about me?? I just started here .
Who is ready to see Rodney Harrison on NBC??? I am..He is very honest and you have to have respect for him as a player who played the game with such passion.
All I know is he hasn't played a down for the Eagles yet and he has found a way to get in front of a camera and microphone. The guy is a total media hog.
Hobbs stinks and I'm glad he's gone. BYE BYE.
I love how ESPN keeps trying to throw dirt on the Patriots and Bill Belichick but not one former players says anything bad about them. Not one! Must drive ESPN crazy which is great.
Shows you how much the current and former players respect BB and KRaft
great interview - everyone should check it out...
one nice tid-bit was when Hobbs was asked about Brady - he mentioned several things, but one stood out...asked about Brady's injury recovery, Hobbs said - while everyone in the Media & sports-world was talking about Tom having infections & possibly not being ready to play "we were watching him run past us"
GO TOM GO!!!
Just goes to show how little we know as fans, especially as fans of the tight-lipped Patriots. I always thought Hobbs was a prick until his post-pats interviews.
ya, same guy. so what's your point?
While Hobbs gets bashed for his onfield performanc at corner, you can never question his heart, loyalty, and intensity. This man played while hurt beyond what most players would have done in that Super Bowl.
its the same guy new england fans bashed his entire career here despite the fact that no one played harder. he was at best a #2 corner, but damn did he leave it all on the field. he went to war for us.
How do you figure Hobbs was 6th on the depth chart? How does the 6th on the depth chart guy start all 16 games? Where did you get ahold of the NE depth chart on draft weekend where Belichick moved Butler ahead of Hobbs on day 1, then traded Hobbs on day 2?!?!?!?! I hate how some Pats fans always try to devalue players when they leave.
Plain and Simple - Hobbs was traded to us because BB wanted value out of the guy since they have a tight cap as is, and Wilfork, Seymour and Mankins are coming up next year (can't count on uncapped happening), and there was little chance that Hobbs would be resigned with the hefty contracts those 3 will want.
Eagles ~ #19 ~ did I SAY "depth chart", genius? You and Mark ~ #5 ~ really need to brush up on your fundamental English skills, before posting your trash on here.
You obviously haven't the faintest idea how the Cap works, or how to build a team:
With the top 2 CB gigs taken, and with 3 young guys of equal or greater talent ~ 2 who now know the system, and 1 who was a 1st Round talent that we got in the 2nd ~ and who're making SCRAP, while Hobbs is pulling down $2.5 Million, there's no way in HELL he was making this team. It was a flat out shrewd move. But I understand that that concept's beyond you two.
The man played in the super bowl with injuries I would have stayed in hospital with! He came across well in this interview. And Im sure plenty of people would feel much better about him had they not blitzed and left Hobbs on an island against Burress in the SB.
I agree with you, Glasgow ~ #21 ~ that Hobbs got a bad rap. I've always liked the guy. The only time I've bagged on'm was right after the trade, when he made some uncalled for comments. MIND you: I was delighted to see him lose his job, because I believe our Back 8 have been holding us back from our Recommencement of Sweet, Sweet Glory...But I think the Eagles got themselves one hell of a good Football player; one who we might VERY well see Week 22!
