Mankins on contracts, Wilfork
BOLTON -- Guard Logan Mankins enters the final year of his contract, and in his chat with reporters today at the Patriots Charitable Foundation golf tournament, he was asked several questions related to his contract status.
One question was "Did you consider not showing up to OTAs?" Another was "With Vince Wilfork's approach in mind, do you feel decisions like those are personal for each player?"
Mankins, who attended OTAs, answered the last question this way: "I think so. Vince’s situation is different than mine, he’s a year older, he’s played one more year than I have, so he’s looking at it from a different angle than I am. Everything is different for each person. I don’t blame Vince for doing what he’s doing. Vince is a good guy, a good teammate, he’s always been good to his franchise. He has to do what he has to do.”
Mankins said he has no concerns with his contract status. All things being equal, he said he'd like to return to the Patriots.
“I figure my contract will take care of itself, either they give me a new one or I move on next year," he said. "So we’ll see what happens.”

Mankins is a stud who HAS to be locked up long-term. He is a road-grater who is one of the best, if not the best LG in the NFL today.
Hopefully a deal will get worked out for both him and Wilfork.
Not sure what the Pats are doing here. I always give them the benefit of the doubt but the two studs they have to lock up are Mankins and Wilfork. I understand not paying a CB big money, but you need to lock up the guys in the trenches.
They cannot lose Mankins...
Mike - Is Mankins a Restricted Free agent in 2010? Or Unrestricted? I thought I read somewhere that said he was a RFA. Can you, or someone else, please clarify? Thanks...
But both guys have a year left on their contracts. By NOT salivating after them and just playing it cool the front office will get them signed to a reasonable contract. Jumping the gun just ups the price. These players know what the fate of players elsewhere has been. They just have to look at Deion Brance and Damien Woody to see how good they have it on a team that competes EVERY year. What's the value of that?
As Bob Kraft said earlier per Riece Pieces "We’re in a unique period in the evolution of the labor relations, so there is a lot of things factoring in here. But in the end, everyone should know that the Patriots are always trying to make decisions to put our franchise and team in the best position to win consistently. That’s what our mantra is.” I'm pretty sure these two deals will get worked out and depending on whether there is a cap in place or not the Patriots will act accordingly. I'm not worried and I've always liked the way players perform in contract years, Looking forward to a great season ahead.
As Mike R has said numerous times this offseason, if 2010 is an uncapped year (looking more like a possibility by the week), then Mankins is NOT a FA next year, but a RFA. It'd be nice to see the Pats sign a couple of the 'biggies' to extensions before the year, but with major labor and economic uncertanties I wouldn't hold my breath at this point.
Mankins is class Wilfork is fat. I think we know why.
He needs to grow his beard back. He should look like a mountain man.
I am glad to seer his low keyed approach to his contract. I hope he and the Pats can work something out.
I just realized that if the 2010 seson goes uncapped, the Patriots reserve the right to Franchise 2 players. Can we please get Wilfork or Mankins signed so we can franchise the other with Seymour?
Mankins has definitely proven to me he's a class act, Vince should take lessons!!
Wow. A guy signs a contract and says he will abide by what he agreed to. Amazing. Hats off to Mr. Mankins for being an honorable man.
If Wilfork goes through with any holdout, the Pats should deal him away asap. Guys like that are not needed around the locker room to be a bad influence to others. And anybody who does the sort of thing Wilfork is contemplating usually plays at half of what they were once they lock in the big green. Seymour Branch and Samuel have not been worth the money they signed for, and unfortunately the Pats are the ones paying Seymour.
I don't agree with the Wilfork is Dishonorable due to him holding out! What if he was a slouch the Pats would send him packing! Look at Vrabel??? So it's part of the Game if WE want him WE need to pay him!! We payed Adalius!
