OTA attendance

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff June 2, 2009 01:15 PM

FOXBOROUGH -- The following players were not spotted for on-field work during the Patriots’ organized team activity today at Gillette Stadium.

  • NT Vince Wilfork
  • DL Ty Warren
  • DL Jarvis Green
  • OL Mark LeVoir
  • LB Tyrone McKenzie
  • LB Jerod Mayo
  • DB Ray Ventrone
  • CB Mike Richardson
  • RB Sammy Morris
  • DB Brandon Meriweather
  • WR Brandon Tate
  • WR Shun White
  • WR Tyree Barnes

The notable absentee here is Wilfork, who is entering the final year of a six-year rookie deal and has been frustrated at the lack of contract talks. Although OTAs are voluntary, one of the trends in recent years has been for players to use them as a vehicle to spark negotiations. Wilfork also was not present at last week's OTA.

  1. Whats the deal with Green, LeVoir, Ventrone, Richardson, White and Barnes missing, any clue? Aren't these guys all bubble prospects at this point?

  1. LeVoir was better than Kazur last year when he had to play, he is making the team and should be a starter.

  1. Actually only Wilfork has a legit reason to not be at Pats OTA or anything else, until he is fined for not showing up that is, reason being that Pats Mgt have their heads showing out of the a$$e$ for not already resigining him.

  1. I've noticed Jerrod Mayo's name on the list a few times. Any recuperation going on that we aren't aware of?

  1. Jarvis Green has a lage cap number for 2009 5.4M. Does he want to get cut so he can sign a longer deal some where else? Mike? He has a roster bonus of 2.3M did he already get thet in late February? How much would the pats save on the 2009 cap if they cut Green now?

  1. Any particular reason Mayo still isn't there? Based on Gasper's article from a few weeks ago , it sounded like he practically had a cot in the corner of the film room. Why would he choose to take personal time now, after staying around, working out and studying all offseason? Doesn't that seem strange...or is it unrelated to that, and is a personal matter? Eh, who knows. As long as he's ready to go in September.

  1. I think this list includes excused and unexcused absences...

  1. Any chance the Pats go after Greg Ellis now that he's been released?

  1. I agree with Rob --- where's Mayo?
According to that article he was a staple at the facility all off season. So why not now?
And to a lessor extent what's up with Meriweather & Warren?

I could care less about the bubble guys not being there but the starters?

  1. Wilfork will not be offered near his worth by the Patriots. He'd be stupid not to become a free agent.

  1. He can't become a free agent until NEXT year. The best he can do by staying away is to get an agreement from the Pats not to franchise him next year, since the franchise tag would effectively lock him up for yet another year.
I think they will come to an accord when camp begins...either a new contract (if they can agree), or an arrangement that he plays this year under his current contract, then isn't franchised next season, allowing him to become an UFA.

  1. sounds like mayo may be losing interest or just burned out from too many hours spent there during the offseason. hopefully he's not injured, he's the best player on the defense.

  1. Wilfork isn't too far away - he's 5 miles down the road, at Plainridge Racecourse

  1. Eric,
I heard he's going to retire. Just sick of watching film and football.

  1. Not having Wilfork signed and happy is absolutely insane! He's the main man on the line for run stops. The way he clogs up those holes, without him you might as well just step aside, put on a CD and allow RBs to waltz right in!
