Patriots dip into high school ranks for scout

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff June 16, 2009 09:30 PM

The Patriots have hired Frank Edgerly for a position in their scouting department, the Asbury Park Press reports today. Edgerly has served the last 10 years as head coach at Red Bank Catholic High School.

Reporters Steven Falk and Tony Graham have the details of Edgerly's appointment, noting that Edgerly first met Bill Belichick at training camp. From the story:

Edgerly said he spent a few days at Patriots' training camp last summer and stayed in contact via e-mail with Belichick in the ensuing months.

Then, around the time of the NFL draft in late April, Belichick e-mailed Edgerly that there might be a position available for him in the organization.

"His contacting me right around draft time came out of the blue," Edgerly said. "It wasn't even in my thought process."

  1. OK, confirmation - the talent pool has officially begun to run dry.

  1. Sonny, ever consider supporting the Jets? They're up and coming plus you wouldn't have to constantly deal with the incompetency of the Kraft's/Belichick.

Clearly you've been following Edgerly's career and know he's not NFL worthy, unlike Belichick who really doesn't have a clue, right?

  1. Sonny_Corlione, don't forget that Bill started out as a no-name at the most entry-level job there was for the Baltimore Colts. And a certain former Defensive Coordinator named Eric started out as a ball-boy for the Browns. Bill must have seen something in Frank Edgerly that he liked.

  1. Me hopes Sonny engages in sarcasm. His previous thoughtful posts would indicate so.

But can you put yourself in the place of Edgerly getting a call from BB to say "I want you - when can you be here?".

  1. Joey and Ritchie are both crazy. Sonny knows a lot more about football then Bill B...

  1. Considering scout isn't exactly top of the food chain...what experience would you prefer someone have? Former GM? Head coach of NFL team? 10 years as a head coach, even if it's a high-school team, is still pretty decent.

  1. His resume might be slightly under desribed. He led Banks High School to 2 division titles and was in the playoff 6 of his 9 seasons as head coach there, but he left in 2007 and served as Director of Recruiting at Rutgers University. Donald Brown , the U Conn running back that some of you guys had the hots for, and was drafted number 27 by the Colts in the first round , was a Banks High School running back under Edgerly.

  1. Leave Sonny alone. It's June. Elementary school kids have nothing to do.

  1. Corlione? Are you kidding dude. You must be a huge fan of the Godfather. Are you such a fake Italian that can't even spell Corleone? Retard.

  1. Ok, ok - perhaps I overreacted slightly! Just the way the post was delivered, “Pats dip into High School ranks” and the description of a seemingly loose relationship, sort of hit an emotional nerve that all of our cast offs had begun to take their toll on the system. Honestly, if Belichick told me to convert all of my Dollars to Pesos in his next press conference I would be on the phone with Bank of A & Smith Barney that afternoon.

Belichick is one of the best evaluators of where talented personnel can fill gaps, not just on the team, but on the coaching staff and in the front office. He knows where his own weaknesses are better than most which is why this team is such a machine. I’m sure the guy has a lot of talent and he is on his way to making a positive contribution to this franchise.
