Patriots sweep ESPN.com All-Decade honors

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff June 25, 2009 11:25 AM

ESPN.com continues its All-Decade Week today, and the Patriots have swept the honors for team, coach and MVP.

This comes one day after ESPN.com listed the top moments of the decade, and the Patriots were a prominent part of that entry -- both good and bad.

  1. The decade ends two seasons from now. The first decade of the 21st century is 2001 through 2010. Or are we doing a decade of years where the third digit of the years are all "0"? In that case, this is still a season too early for that made up decade.

  1. ESPN trying to win back some Boston fans after two years of driving the "Boston Hate Club" bandwagon. I still don't support their lousy network(s) of idiots.

  1. Yeah, be sure to check out the comments too. I think they may have set the record this time for most times the word "cheater" was in article comments. One guy told me the Patriots' 6th ranked rushing attack was mediocre. It was a very educational conversation.

  1. Hey Bubba if you read the article you would have seen that they said the decade had 1 season to go. I guess they feel it still won't matter for anyone to surpase the patriots, Brady or Belichick for the honors.
And for ever the true decades for sports has always been 1950-1959, 1960-1969, 1970-1979, and so on.
It includes only the seasons in the actual decade.

  1. Bubba, decades are always expressed by the third digit. No one would say the 90's didn't start until 1991 or 1980 was in the 70's

  1. How tired is all the hate? They never get tired of hearing the sound of their own voice - or reading their own hateful anti-Belichick sentiment. Wow. If your own attitude and life wasn't so crappy, maybe you could find something else to do with all the energy you waste hating. It's not clever, it's pathetic. It's old . Get a clue. Nobody cares if you spew this hate.

  1. Hello to Bubba'sBridgeto21stCentury (Comment #2):

The first decade of the 21st Century is from 2000 to 2009. Think of it like your birthday. Your first decade starts when you are born and your age is counted not in years but in months. You're not 1-year old until you've lived a year. So, your first decade ranges from 0 to 9. Count the years. You'll find 10 of them, starting at zero.

  1. Bubba is right. The decade ends in two years. The 90's didn't start until 91 and this century didn't start until 2001, but thanks for your insight davdev.

  1. Brady goes down and is out for the season. They report that this will test the brilliance of Belichick. They go 11-5, and become one of the few times in history with that record to not make the playoffs. They still doubt him. Is it the jealous NY ESPN staff? It's pure jealousy on most of this country for being successful. We are a city with the best traveling fans. I guess ESPN it too smart to give out decade awards before the decade ends?

  1. i am so sick of hearing how belichick "cheated". he never cheated. he broke a league rule, yes. HE NEVER CHEATED!!!

  1. It funny to hear some people say that ESPN has any love for the Patriots. It was pure venom for an entire season by ESPN with Spygate. Merril Hodge and Mark Schlereth were giddy and puking on them all season and the the entire country villified them. But they shoved it back down the throats of all that opposed them. Belichick and Brady were taking every team they faced out to the woodshed for a while there. And that makes that same ESPN (only one year removed) vote them in GOING AWAY as the best NFL team of the decade. Its a bit surprising but very refreshing. And guess what? I 100% agree with them. The Patriots absolutely DOMINATED that entire NFL for their record breaking run(s). They had the miracle of 2001 with the birth of Brady, then his maturity and magic of 2003-2004 seasons when they ran off back to back 14-2 records ending in back to back championships and a NFL record 21 game regular season winning streak. Man that was insane. Then they the rip off their remarkable record breaking, thoroughly dominating, 16-0 season. And that 16-0 coming AFTER spygate That just showed ESPN and the world the truth.

No one can deny their dominance and 5 AFC Championship games with their only AFC title loss being a miracle comeback by Manning. In fact, the Patriots could very easily have 5 Super Bowl titles if not for both Manning Miracles.

Yes, make no mistake These Brady/Belichick Patriots are one of the all time greats and something very special. They now simply need the next 2 championships to be considered the best of all time.

And no one should doubt them. I cant wait for this season.

  1. ESPN spent 18 months trying to murder this franchise and now they're handing out these "awards"? Eat a d*ck, Bristol.

  1. ESPN Silvers is the worst guy of all! Go Patriots.

Posted by steve June 26, 09 04:50 AM
  1. I'll chime in with 1 fact that says it all. The Patriots own EVERY MAJOR WIN STREAK in the NFL. We take home another couple rings and they may as well rename it to the BRADY/BELICHICK trophy.

This winning stuff NEVER gets old! GO PATS! I'd chit if we ripped off another perfect season. 1 game, 1 play at a time.

    ~ESPN who?

  1. Guy clearly can't write but he gets an A+ in Brown Nosing 101...

Ya suppose they might be anticipating "something" in '09?

  1. When you are 10 years old you have lived a decade, not 9 years old. When you count numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ... all the way to 9 you get 10 numbers, but only nine years. Your next decade starts with 11 to 20, etc. when we are talking the best team of the 80's the years would be 80'-89', and not 81' to 90 because 90' is not in the 80's. Duh. I guess Bubba would be partially correct.

  1. We won't go back to B.C., but what were the years that encompassed the very first decade A.D.? Was it 0 - 9? It couldn't be, because there was no year 0. No, it was 1-10. So why would it be any different now in the 21st century (which, by the way, started in 2001, not 2000)? If you continue the decades from the starting point, you'll see that Bubba was correct.

  1. If the Steelers win again (gag!) wouldn't they be "the" team?

  1. STEELERS FAN.....if we repeat as champions...we would have same amout of SB this decade....since we stunk in 2002 and 2003, I will give the edge to Patriots. I am thankful that we were bad in 2002 becos with the 16th pick in draft
THE STEELERS SELECT TROY POLAMALU.....BEST ALL AROUND SAFETY IN GAME.............

  1. Cut to the chase here ESPN S#$KS. They will sell their soul for ratings - so does that mean that R. Harrison s#$ks too - yes he has sold out to cash

  1. It certainly was a decade of cheaters prospering.

Bonds cheats his way to Home Run Records.
Patriots cheat their way to super bowls.
Illegal immigrants cheat their way to a better life.
Harrison plays dirty and uses steroids and gets a broadcasting job.

Marion Jones was the only cheater who had the spoils of her cheating taken away. It just goes to show, breaking the rules pays dividens. Why play by the rules why you can cheat your way to success?

Posted by Frank June 27, 09 08:32 PM
  1. Frank (#26) in you'r leveraging this topic for your Bridge to Politics, you forgot that the decade started with President Bush (a supporter of an open immigration policy) stealing the 2000 election to epitomize your statement, "Why play by the rules why you can cheat your way to success?

Posted by Algonquin J. Calhoun June 28, 09 09:14 AM
  1. Frank - you're an idiot. The Patriots didn't cheat to win one game and there is not a schred of proof that says otherwise. Also Harrison took HGH not Steroids dumba$$ - there is a difference. I know facts aren't your strong suit. Bottomline - Patriots Team of the Decade - and fans of other teams jealous whiners of the decade

  1. Why play by the rules why you can cheat your way to success?

Words to live by. THAT is the legacy of George W. Bush. Sorry, THAT and the incredibly enormous mess he and Chaney left this country in. And you Patriots haters/losers complain about a video camera in the wrong place?

Posted by Maui Dan June 30, 09 12:56 AM
  1. Congratulations, Patriots! From scouting, to drafting, to practicing, to game planning, to managing the salary cap, to bringing in players who want to win, you earned these honors.

But the decade ain't over. Good luck this year!
