Rodney on his broadcasting approach

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff June 3, 2009 12:20 PM

Rodney Harrison is currently on a conference call for NBC, as the network has officially hired him as an analyst.

Harrison was asked his opinion, when he was a player, of former players becoming broadcasters. He then used an example with the Patriots as to how he will approach his job.

"There are certain guys who you definitely respect their opinions, but other guys were afraid to come out and tell the hard-core truth," he said. "As an analyst, it's your job to be fair but honest. Sometimes you have to be brutally honest with guys you played with, guys who are your friends. You can’t shy away from certain questions.

"If there is a question in Week 8, Week 10, when the Patriots play the Colts, if Tom Brady is not performing and everyone is questioning if his knee is bothering him, I'm going to have to mention that. I'm not going to be afraid to do that.

"When I played, I didn't have many friends. I'm sure I'm not going to make many friends now."

  1. Hurrah for Rodney. I watch most of the games on TV with the mute button on. They sure need more incisive commentary to replace at least some of what passes for analysis.

  1. I hope Rodney can speak his opinion and not because it's what the producers want you to say.
