SI.com explores Team of the Decade

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff June 3, 2009 03:15 PM

Don Banks of SI.com explores the "Team of the Decade" debate, noting that the 2009 season will ultimately determine which franchise claims the top spot.

Writes Banks:

"My first impulse tells me it'll be easy to discern who will follow in the storied footsteps of the Packers in the 1960s, the Steelers in the '70s, the 49ers in the '80s and the Cowboys in the '90s. The New England Patriots, with their three Super Bowl titles and history-making 16-0 regular season of 2007, are the runaway leaders in the clubhouse. ... Ah, but when you dig a little deeper, and imagine a few scenarios that could unfold in 2009, the Patriots appear something less than a slam dunk. ..."

Banks does put the Patriots in the No. 1 spot at this time, but details how that could change.

He ranks all 32 clubs based on their performance this decade.

  1. You don't get any money, a plaque or even little gold stars on your forehead because some sportswriter can't write an original article. Banks merely follows the lead of most publications and that's "when writer's cramp hits, make a list."

Banks is usually better than this.

  1. It's kind of sad that Don Banks is beating the drum of how the Raiders were jobbed in the Snow Bowl simply because the refs properly applied a counter-intuitive rule.

The Raiders had plenty of chances to win the Snow Bowl. If they hadn't folded like a house of cards after one play went against them, they could have easily beaten the Pats. But it's much easier to whine and play the victim.

  1. Team of the decade is a solid debate though. I thought about the possibility of the Steelers if they win another one, but I would have to lean toward the Pats. The tiebreaker to me is the Pats beat Pittsburgh in the playoffs twice in two meetings. Naming any team but those two is silly though...

  1. Sorry, the only team that can come close to claiming the title so obviously owned by the Pats is the Steelers, and unless they have a PERFECT season, they still come in second. Three in five isn't three in four, and the Pats still have a perfect regular season under their belt. Let us not also forget the myriad of records that have fallen during this decade thanks to the Pats. Winning percentage. Winning margin, TD throws and receptions in a season, number of games won in a row (twice). While the Steelers could make a close second IF they have a great year, they still will fail to match what the Patriots have done this season.

  1. Does he realize that the decade actually ends in 2010? Sorta negates his whole point of the article, as well as timing...doesn't it? Much as the millenium actually began in 2001, so does the decade actually end in 2010. (There was no year 0)

  1. Beat the Steelers in this season's AFC championship and win the SB in their usual "much too close for comfort" fashion.

That's the formula to end all debate and we can start the discussion about the team of both decades (whenever that begins, Rob).

  1. Don, Don, Don, you said that the "G-Men" won in 2000. Wow, I think I am the only here that caught this, THEY LOST to the Ravens! The game wasn't even close! Hmmm, what was the score? 34-7 Ravens!

  1. Rob (#5) - are you suggesting that the Seventies began in 1971, and if so, what's your justification for including 1970 in the Sixties? The decade ends 6 months from now.

  1. Stan a perfect season means you win every game.
The NFL season begins with game #1 and ends with the Superbowl.
Lets hope the Pat's have a "perfect pre-season" so they can put that
banner next to the 16-0 regular season banner.
Forget about the Superbowl they lost, while being heavy favorites
Championship driven teams like the Steelers care about Superbowls
