Chung deal official

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff July 27, 2009 04:38 PM

The Patriots announced the signing of rookie safety Patrick Chung today.

The team also announced the release of safety Antwain Spann.

Rookies reported to Gillette Stadium yesterday, and Chung -- the team's top choice (34th overall) -- was in attendance as the sides beat the reporting deadline in striking a deal.

The Patriots have Brandon Meriweather and James Sanders returning as starting safeties, and Chung projects as the No. 3 option. When Meriweather was not on the field for organized team activities, Chung stepped in for him.

Spann bounced between the Patriots' practice squad and 53-man roster in each of the last three seasons, with his primary contributions coming on special teams. He was a longer shot to make the roster.

  1. Small shock in seeing Spann released. I assumed he was one of the ST's players they liked and who had a shot at making the roster.

  1. This probably means Taylor will switch his number to #28. I'm glad Chung is officially in the fold.

  1. i think it's a classy move by pats letting spann go now when he can sign elsewhere and have a full training camp with his new team. obviously a guy they've liked enough to have kept around on the practice sqad/active shuttle the last couple years, but he no longer had ps elegability and they wouldn't have had a roster spot for him anyway, what with slater, ventrone and mcgowan likely vying for one spot as a special teamer/reserve safety. here's hoping spann signs on elsewhere where he can play a more substantial role. thanks for the contributions.
