Chung reports on rookie date
The Globe has learned that rookie safety Patrick Chung, the Patriots' top overall selection in the 2009 draft, is with the team in Foxborough today on the team's rookie reporting date.
Chung's reporting to training camp today means that he and the Patriots have been able to agree to terms on a contract.
The 5-foot, 11-inch, 212-pound Chung was the first of the Patriots' four second-round picks, taken No. 34 overall. That was the pick the Patriots obtained from the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for quarterback Matt Cassel and outside linebacker Mike Vrabel.
The team's veteran reporting date is Wednesday, with the first full-squad practices set for Thursday.

Great news - can't wait to see how good Chung will be!
I was waiting to see if he signed. What is the contact details???? As of right now,
Pro Football Talk didn't have anything on it...It is a great sign to get that guy into camp. I am big fan of Patrick Chung. He can play both safety positions, which most guys can't do....and play corner.
Does everyone think the Patriots will utilize him like Rodney Harrison??????
Pro Football Talk just reported.......no contract details yet...
Chung will be an all pro, almost immediately,.
Wonder how Bill plans to use him, and how long before one of the Globe's sports reporters throws in a Chung-king reference in a story about Patrick?
As I said before, i feel Chung was been signed for about a week now. Its only now for B.B to decide who to release to make room for Chung

Let's see if cracks the starter roster first before you anoint him an all-pro, he hasn't played a down yet
I hope Patrick Chung is better than Eugene Chung ;-)
Do any of you fans have the audacity to e-mail Wynn Silberman and
inquire about his client, Jake Ingram? Isn't it funny that the toughest
signing is a 6th round draft pick?
Hopefully this means that they are going to announce all the signings at once of the last couple guys.
Chung has potential to be a great safety but he hasnt played a down yet and has to beat out Sanders or hope for an injury that we dont want. Chung should get the nod by year two or 3 depending on how fast he progresses.
I'd expect a lot of on the line/third safety looks to spy the QB, help out the OLBs and put opposing receivers on IR (lots of Rodney Harrison-type stuff).
Hoping he see's a lot of action this season, the safety position is equal in importance to corner in today's NFL - - - this pick needs to be productive in 09/10
If Chung performs better than our current safeties in the preseason and camp, then he will start, if he doesn't, he won't. The Pats are pretty good about playing the best players regardless of contract or experience. Just look at Mayo - how many people would have expected us to start a rookie middle linebacker when training camp started last year? I think everyone can agree he worked out about as good as anyone could have hoped.
I agree with you, Mike Allen. Dorian, I see your point, BUT.....Sanders, although a servicable safety, is not in the same class as Chung. Sanders will be sitting and Chung starting by years end, if it even takes that long. Man, I freakin hope so! For what we gave up to get that pick he better be the second coming of Ronnie Lott!
Good lord.
Jax. #13. Considering that the Panthers had a very similar situation ~ loaded down with Julius Peppers' bloated salary ~ and got their depth GUTTED, this off-season, because his salary PARALYZED them ~ I would think you'd be on your knees in GRATITUDE that we have somebody shrewd enough to made sure he was ABLE to move Cassell's bloated salary ~ And Vrabel's bloated salary!!! ~ and actually cadge an early 2nd Rounder ~ which is absolute GOLD!!! ~ for them!!
Not only did we avoid getting gutted like the Panthers did, we managed to ADD a number of players ~ Fred Taylor, Shawn Springs, Leigh Bodden, Chris Baker, Alex Smith, and many more ~ BECAUSE Coach Bill pulled that off!
I thank the GODS that Coach Bill has more sense that some of my fellow fans!
I have high hopes for this player. Having good players at safety makes the whole defense better. Overall it looks like the entire secondary is much better this year. That will allow the defense as a whole to be much better, including the pass rush! The ability to cover receivers a little longer will give the front seven that much more time to reach the QB. Last year, even though we had a very talented front seven, they never had a chance because of a weak secondary.
With an improved secondary we should see improvements in some important areas, like third down stats. The defense simply HAS to improve this area so they can get off the field and get our talented offense back on the field! Having the best offense in the league will not matter if the defense can't get them on the field!
I also agree that it was good to see the Pats get Cassel and his salary out of NE. He is an ok QB, but not good enough for a top tier team. He is too much of a hot/cold player. Yeah, he did well last year, but look at who his supporting cast was! ANY NFL quarterback should have had the best year of his career with that group!
sanders has nothing to worry about. chung is good but sanders is a very solid player who has been a leader on and off the field.
Fanatical Yankee, I am grateful, but need I remind you of what denver got from the bears for cutler?! You guys sticking up for Belichicks trade lost a lot of your argument when that trade happened. No complaints. I like what we've done this year, but the fact remains.....we could have gotten more and still be where we are now if Bill didn't give Pioli a buddy deal.
Keith, Sanders was the best of the average safeties we had. Now we have an upper tier talent in Chung. Sanders will be a backup soon. Enjoy the season Gentlemen! We may disagree, but we are still brother Patriot fans! Sucks about Crable and Warren, eh?
