Globe 10.0: Camp preview, RB talk
During today's episode of Globe 10.0, Bob Ryan and Chris Gasper bat around a pair of Patriots questions. In the clip above, the pair identify some key story lines to watch for when training camp opens on Thursday. Among the topics identified:
- Outside linebacker -- Who replaces Vrabel? Does Shawn Crable develop in Year 2? Will the Patriots pursue Derrick Burgess?
- Cornerback -- Can Leigh Bodden be a No. 1 corner? How do the Patriots replace Ellis Hobbs?
- Third receiver -- What does Joey Galloway have left in the tank? Can Greg Lewis emerge as a top receiving target?
In the clip at left, Ryan and Gasper debate which running back will emerge as the featured back for the 2009 season. Both are cautious about veteran free-agent acquisition Fred Taylor given his age (33), while Gasper says the Patriots would be well-served if Laurence Maroney took the lead as go-to back after showing flashes of brilliance (yet still failing to reach potential) during his first three seasons in New England.
Ryan and Gasper agree that, while he won't lead the team in carries, Kevin Faulk remains possibly the most important running back on the team, particularly when the Patriots need a pivotal first down.
