Kirwan on camp battles
NFL.com analyst Pat Kirwan looks at the top 10 intriguing training camp battles to watch across the NFL.
His No. 2 choice is right here in New England -- at outside linebacker.
Kirwan looks at the spot opposite of Adalius Thomas, noting that the Patriots need 10 sacks out of that position. He asks the question: Who will step up?
After his top 10 choices, Kirwan lists "honorable mention" choices, and the Patriots' running back competition is on his radar.

I would say 10 sacks from Crable or Woods would be the perfect situation.
5-7 sacks sounds more about right and the rest of the slack can be picked up by Seymour.
To add to Dorian's comment, I'd look for a healthy Ty Warren to help add to that total, too. He is coming off a subpar season but hopefully the offseason surgeries will get him back to his previous form.
Great question---10 sacks from Crable or Woods, doubtful...I agree w/dorian, maybe 5 if we are lucky...The DL is going to have to step up in a big way...I still see this as a huge hole...
Personally, i believe WAT TOO MUCH is being made out of the Patriots OLB position...look, I loved Vrabel as much as the next guy & appriciate EVERYTHING he's done for the Patriots organization, however he's past his prime & we got young talented players in place that need playing time & real game experience...the Patriots roster is STACKED with talent as it is & very deep in many positions, cuts are going to be extreemly tough as it is without adding another pass rusher to the roster that will get minimal play......lets not forget how beat up the Patriots D was last year in addition to a horrible secondary that has now been upgraded BIG TIME!!! I'm feelin' very confident that the Pats are sitting sweet!!!!
crables going to be a beast. guy was a 3rd round pick last season. bb choosing a linebacker in the 3rd round usually shows that hes got some skills. in bill i trust.
Our best camp battles are:
A.) OLB
B) CB's
C) TE's
D) RB
E) SS/FS
F) RT
G) C
Joe
before last years draft, BB had never chosen a linebacker lower than the 5th round ever since he took over the team. That ought to show a lot of people what he thought of the linebackers he picked last year, being Mayo and Crable in the 1st and 3rd round.
The obvious question is what if the position only generates nine sacks? I'm assuming if it generates only eight, that means they''ll miss the playoffs again. But what happens if it generates nine? That's almost ten. Disappointed that Kirwan didn't touch on that.
