Poll: Do you like the draft in prime time?

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff July 27, 2009 06:00 AM

Peter King returned from vacation with his "Monday Morning Quarterback" column on SI.com this morning, and at one point, he references a poll on Boston.com regarding the NFL's decision's to make the draft a three-day event starting on a Thursday.

The thought here was to republish the poll (with the chance to continue to vote) and move it to the top entry of the blog so it was easier to find.

  1. I have to say I am SO SICK AND TIRED of every major sporting event being moved to the evenings, often late in the evenings. When I was a kid major events like the Super Bowl and NBA playoffs were family events that included young and old. Now, but the young and old go to bed before these events finish, which means the grow up not being fans and ruins the shared atmosphere of the event.

  1. Regardless of the time of day, the NFL needs to stop allowing the local mental hospitals to organize field trips to the draft, subjecting us to partisan New York cretins who cheer every move made by their hapless Jets.

  1. I started watching the draft in 1980 and it always used to be on Tuesday mornings.I have called in sick on draft days when I was younger to watch the draft.I do not like moving the draft to primetime. Recently the end of April became a passage where on that Saturday, I did not do yard work but watched the draft. In 1988 my wife went into labor when the first round started and I told her were not going naywhere until the Patriots pick. That is the year we drafted Vincent "the undertaker" Brown in the 2nd round.I always bought Joel Bushbaum's draft books every year they were printed. I guess I am old scholl but I prefer the draft back on Saturday.

  1. We love having our Draft Party that last weekend in April. It's when our football crowd reunites for the first time since the Super Bowl, and tons of fun. Prime time will ruin the whole experience and that would be a shame.

  1. I don't care, the Pats usually trade down and pick in the 2nd round, doesn't really matter. Shocking how much the NFL and ESPN think highly of their product, it only means more losers will call in sick on Friday's to watch the 7th round.

  1. Patriots don't pick till about 7:30 the past few years anyway. Keep it.

  1. I host both a Superbowl and Draft party every year. This will end what has become a tradition. People who like all different teams and live in the tri-state area come over and we BBQ, drink, socialize, compare stats in every possible draft magazine. It is the main event between the SB and training camp. I hope they change their minds and dont ruin it.

  1. I can't believe the owners let that Pats hater move the draft. Goodell is a POS that needs to be taken down and removed as commisioner. It took five ballots to get him elected. The owners should remove him in one ballot.

  1. when you add sentences to a yes or no poll question you are helping to determine the out come

  1. It's horrible for German fans like me. Then the draft will kick off, it's like 1:30 a.m. and the Patriots probably won't pick till it's 4:30 a.m. - That's so not cool...

  1. Yeh.. lets move the draft around I'm tired of the New York crowd , lets move it around, East coast/West coast doesn't matter get it out of NY. And keep it to Saturday and Sunday. And one more thing, They have WAAAAAAYYYYY to much time to pick in the first and 2nd round.

  1. Personally I like the new draft format and it gives me back the weekend. I can enjoy round one after work on Thursday and rounds two & three after work on Friday. Check in once or twice on Saturday between chores and I'm good to go. Seriously, I think a lot of people are going to warm up to this after a draft or two.

  1. Yeah, here in the UK the time difference will be a killer...not that the NFL cares so much about 'international' fans, I know.....

  1. Memo to the NFL--NOBODY WANTS TO WATCH FOOTBALL OR ANY NFL EVENT ON THURSDAYS, except for the Thanksgiving Day games of course. Stop trying to fix things that are not broken.

  1. Money money money money money money money money!! That's all this is about, as usual!! They don't care if anybody actually watches it, just so long as they can sell advertising time for more dollars!!! Absolutley disgusting!!

I can be honest about it, if it wasn't for the fact that the three sports that I like have had great teams for the past few years, I wouldn't even watch these overpaid immature a$$#0les!!

  1. Please just give me a knife- Boring like watching paint dry. However remember we got lots of things to sell so they will promote and force this down our throats. Just like all the empty seats at stadiums that TV is very careful not to show on TV. We will be told what a success it's been.

  1. Roger Goodell said about the Jets fans at the draft , "Those goofy bastards are about the best thing I've got going!"

  1. Love the idea. Let's see how it goes before we throw it under the bus.

  1. I'm extremely angry about this. Draft Saturday is one of my favorite days. Pizza, Beer, and friends, watching the Draft unfold. Now thats over. I'll still watch, but it won't be the same. Why does everything have to be about money?

Posted by Joe July 27, 09 09:18 AM
  1. Great idea - especially with the first round. With a family that includes young children, the draft may as well be mailed in, as far as I am concerned. There is zero chance I can get to see it right now.

  1. Reader beware;

This quote in Peter King's article has forced me to never read his column every again:
"July 20, Boston. Trip to the urologist. Regular checkup. Two docs. First doc examines me, and I should say he examines me thoroughly. He leaves and the other doc comes in. Very nice fellow, just like the first one. He puts on the rubber glove. Whoa! Whoa! This, uh, already happened! Second urologist wants to check out the situation for himself. Examines me a little more thoroughly. Other than the self-inflicted left-hand bite mark, all's right with the world. Gosh, I love vacation."

Was that really necessary in a football column? Gross. The guy desperately needs a cure for Alzheimer's and I hope he recognizes he's not a welcomed addition to this area. The guy is ill.

  1. The biggest problem is that two out of the three days are on the weekdays.

It would make more sense for it to be round 1 and 2 on Friday 8pm. Saturday 4pm rounds 3 and 4. Sunday 12pm rounds 5,6,7

Like is it that hard to set up a format like that? Instead they are doing this during the work/school week? How is this appealing to the fans? They are addressing this ratings/money in the worst way for the fans and its not a good idea.

They fixed the time issue in the draft and I was very happy about that and they shaved off a couple hours due to that. This brings in money but makes it more complicated for people to watch it.

  1. Moving it to the evening will allow viewers to switch between watching the draft on ESPN and Ben Roethlisberger on the spice channel.

  1. The Pats had by far the most interesting draft in the NFL. Almost none of it would have been covered in prime time.
