Tom Brady expects to play in preseason

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff July 31, 2009 11:45 AM

FOXBOROUGH -- Quarterback Tom Brady's injured left knee is progressing to the point that he should be on the field for preseason games.

In a wide-ranging group interview, Brady was asked if he thinks he'll play in the preseason, and if he'll push to play.

"Yeah, I think I'll play," he said. "Last year, it wasn't like I wasn't supposed to play. I would have loved to have played, but some circumstances came up where I couldn't. I think it's really important for a quarterback to be out there playing. If you're the leader of the offense, you have to be out there leading in the preseason and the practices. I'm excited for those games, because I think we can make improvements in those games."

Brady has been wearing a black knee brace that extends below his jersey pants. He said he has a comfort level with the brace, as he is able to forget that he is wearing it when on the field.

“It’s the last thing I’m thinking about out here,” he said, while standing on the sideline of one of the team’s practice fields.

Asked if the brace has restricted him in any way, he joked: “Like I’ve gone from slow to slower? That’s possible. But that doesn’t matter much for me.”

Brady said that he is not thinking about the knee when he practices.

“I’ve kind of made a concerted effort to move on. That was last season. This is this season. I don’t think about it. I think it’s been a great learning experience for me. I’m using it as a positive. Hopefully I can go out this year and be a great quarterback for this team.”

In terms of his receiving corps, Brady touched on the timing he’s working to develop, starting with Randy Moss.

“It’s easy to have great chemistry with Randy, he’s the best receiver probably to ever play the game,” he said. “You just have to throw it where he’s running, because he’s usually open. We spent a lot of great time this offseason, also with Wes [Welker], Joey [Galloway] was here a lot, Greg [Lewis] was here a lot. I feel like we’ve got off to a really good start. But this is really when it all begins.

"Randy, when he's out here, he's one of the hardest working guys we have. He's so fun to have on the team. He's a great teammate. We have a great relationship. There has been a lot of trust that has been built up over the last few years. I look forward to being back on the field with him."

Brady noted that head coach Bill Belichick has emphasized a crisper preseason than 2008.

“We were 0-4 and didn’t play particularly well in any phase of the game, and this year he wants to put a lot of emphasis on us getting out and being prepared, so that when those [regular-season] games come, we can build on those [preseason] games,” he said.

  1. well we have a great qb, 4 amazing receivers, 4 good rb's, a faithful running back (Kevin Faulk), defense is looking pretty good thus far, let see if we can sweep the NFL and take the record too 19-0 this year to shut-up the Giant fans. What do you SAY!!! New England Patriots ALL THE WAY!!!!!

  1. We also have a brand new defensive backfield, questionable depth at linebacker, tons of rookies, and an unhappy Wilfork and probably Seymour. Plus guys on the O-Line working in either the last year of their contract or second to last year of their contract. I love the Patriots, but for all their strengths, there's still question marks. When there's active discussion about 37-38 year old Willie McGinest, and last year you employed Rosie Colvin and Junior Seau, and you traded Mike Vrabel, you have to know that everything isn't set in stone. There's question marks.

Congrats on a great Superbowl win. Having celebrated three as a fan myself this decade, I know how sweet they are. The hating is just sad, though dude. I expect it from Jets fans, but I didn't think Giants fans were that desperate for attention.

  1. Today is a sad day in Boston, buit if there is one thing that does unite Boston fans it's that NEW YORK S@#KS. That will never change and you can't get that stink off of you.....

  1. The Giants won fair and square. The name of the game is scoring more points than your opponent, so... that discussion is a moot point.

However... as a Pats fan, understand that the Giant's victory was roughly equivalent to losing the NBA title on a last second 60 footer. The 42 yard pass to Tyree couldn't be duplicated again if you ran it 1000 times, not to mention Manning's insane sudden ability to evade a crushing pass rush... and all of that happened on third down.

Now I ain't crying about it, but facts are facts. Brady shredded the Giants defense when it mattered most. That is an indisputable fact. Asante Samuel should have had a gimme INT on the final winning drive... 9 out of 10 people would agree, instantly turning Manning from hero to goat (threw it right to him!)

Also a fact: the Giants won, and hats off to them. But rational people on both sides of the aisle understand that in truth, it was by the very slimmest of margins. Still, a win is a win, and they deserved it.

  1. Oh come on......yes, NY won the Super Bowl. Did they play well? Yes. Did the Pats play well? Yes. This is a game of gladiators, and often the team that has the ball last will win. The players do their best, and sometimes their tremendous athleticism allows for "miracle" plays. But in the end, they made theirs, and we didn't make ours. These facts have been typed about in the posts before mine. However, the Giants couldn't repeat, which the Pats did earlier in the decade. The Patriots are still one of the teams to beat in the AFC, and if they get to the Super Bowl, will have another great chance to win. Let's hope for a rematch!!!

  1. I moved here from Dallas, and I wish the Patriot's the best this year. It's great that Brady is back. It would be nice to see the Pats win it all. They deserve it. They've got a great team with alot of class, and I think that they will continue to be so for a long time. I see New England as becoming a dynasty like teams of the past, Green Bay 60's, steelers 70's, 49ers 80's,Cowboy's 90's. The Patriots will be back! I haven't had a favorite pro team to root for a few years (sick of Jerry Jones and what the Cowboys have become,) So I'll just root for New England. As for all the NY fans all I can say is Go Cowboys!
