Belichick, Burgess & the Pro Bowl
When the Patriots lost a heartbreaker to the Colts in the 2006 AFC Championship Game, one of the trickle-down effects was that Bill Belichick and the New England staff were assigned to coach the Pro Bowl.
Some connections were made that week that perhaps have played a part in players coming to play for the Patriots.
Derrick Burgess might be in that category.
As loyal blog reader John D. pointed out today, this link from NFL.com has some neat on-field "wired" practice footage from the Pro Bowl; check out the 45 second mark when Belichick is talking with Burgess.
"[Raiders executive Mike] Lombardi told me you were fast," Belichick is heard saying to Burgess. "I don't know. Maybe it's just on third down. Pretty fast there."

Burgess didn't seem to interested in what BB had to say
Man, he was talking to Ed Reed at one point... BB absolutely adores him. He raves about his skills every chance he gets (and rightfully so). Imagine if Reed followed Burgess' lead and joined forces with the greatest coach ever... ahhh the endless possibilites and trophys..
Joe,
I was thinking the same thing. Just a weird reply to be sure.
Did Burgess pass his physical????
I know he didnt show up for Minicamp for Oakland, so what kind of shape is he in??? ...........
Daydreamer......Your name fits u perfectly>>>:)
Give me Troy Polamalu anyday.....
.
#2 BB also coached A Thomas in the same Pro Bowl so he was the first. Thats our coach, always thinking.
Why is steelersfan hanging out on a Patriots website? The last place you will find me on the web is any site that has anything to do with Pittsburgh, Denver or Philadelphia football. You need to get out of the house.
Pete......U must be new....I have been on here for a few weeks. I have respect for Patriots organization and like the blogs by mike reiss...U are the first person to wish me off this site....Alot of Steelers fans have hate for your team but I am not that way. I have never seen you on here, maybe u changed ur screen name. I have been treated very well so for until your remarks......Don't worry, I am not going anywhere...:)
Hey Mike I love the trade but if its only for one year then a 3rd and a 4th(or 5th) seems a little steep. What are the chances he gets signed to a multi year contract?
Hay Steeler Fan go away. To think that Troy is even close to Ed Reed in all around saftety play is just homerism, and it's not even your home so go check out the Steeler blog (if they have one).
I tend to agree with the Dome on this one go away Steeler knob. Take the Fanatical Yankee fan with you.
Steelers Fan, you are welcome on our site to enjoy the excellent work by Mike Reiss, just as long as you don't start posting jackass remarks like we tend to get from most fans of other teams. I agree about Polamalu, he is the better overall safety, I have tremendous respect for his game.
Pete,
Backoff because he's a good poster with good insight.
nfl.com took the link down.................I wonder why????? Do you think that the Pats requested to have the video removed or did the NFL make the decision to remove it??????
Pete,
Steelersfan just made you look like a fool.
Pete - You're an idiot.
Canpatsfan....You are clueless to think is better all around safety than Troy Polamalu.....Ed Reed is the best FREE safety BUT NOT better all around. U must have never played the game before.
Who is better against Pass?? Reed (only becos he plays 20 to 30yrds down the field)
Who is better against the Run??? Polamalu
Who is better tackler??? Polamalu
Who is better in the blitz??? Polamalu
That's 3 out of 4..........Polamalu is only safety teams have to game plan for.....
Polamalu is the only Steeler that is the best in what he does.....I already said Brady is the best QB in football and Maybe of all time.
Guys,
Steelers Fan isn't a troll. He offers thoughtful insights and appreciates good football talk (that's why he reads Mike R). Reed and Polamalu are both big time playmakers that offenses have to be thinking about. I don't think there is an clear cut answer to who is better. Obviously, Steelers Fan has to back his boy.
Steeler Fan has every bit the same right to be here as any of us. Both Reed and Polu are pretty kick ass in my book.
Thanks Kenny!!
Thanks Jess!!
Thanks Clark!!
I really enjoy this website and forum. I respect the organization and love the way the Patriots go about there business. I have to say, Pittsburgh and NE run first class operations. When other fans come on here, they blast the Patriots and probably don't know much about the game. I wish the Steelers websites would do this but we get a once a week live chat. I love my football and I know you guys too.
If I say anything about the Patriots moves or what there doing, it is becos I like to speak from another teams perspective. I love the Burgess pickup for you guys and love ur 2009 draft....especially Chung.....
I hear what Steelers is saying, the preeminent powerhouses in the AFC year in, year out have been NE, Pitt, and Indy, and only NE and Pitt have won more than one championship. I’ve been know to read an Ed Bouchette article or two in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Truthfully, if the Steelers win the Super Bowl next year, they are at least in the discussion for team of the decade as unfathomable as that might have seemed just a season ago. Winning next year would give the Steelers back to back titles, something every team of the decade (60's Packers, 70's Steelers, 80's 49'ers, 90's Cowboys) has managed to accomplish.
If the Steelers could win the Super Bowl this year, and find a way to beat the Patriots in the playoffs, they would have a legitimate claim to the title of team of the decade. The fact that the Steelers have lost two AFC Championships in Pittsburgh to NE does not help the Steelers cause, nor does the fact that the Patriots have appeared in 4 Super Bowls vs. 3 for Pittsburgh.
Furthermore, however excruciatingly painful the loss to NY was in the 2008 Super Bowl, the fact remains that NE had a perfect regular season that year. Add in a 21 game winning streak (snapped, ironically by the Steelers) to that, and the fact that the Patriots have more wins this decade than any other franchise, the onus is on Pittsburgh to go out and finally shake the monkey of its back and beat the Patriots in the playoffs.
Hall talks too much for being a mediocre corner who can't stop getting flagged for 15's. How did he get selected to the pro bowl again?
C'mon, now! Let's not get carried away!
At the very most ~ and Gods forbid! ~ the Steelers have a shot at CO-team of the decade. Every decade has had a single team put its stamp on it, with the exception of the 50's, which belonged to the Browns AND the Lions.
But this IS a Patriots Site, gents! Shouldn't we be focused less on the Steelers, and more on the Patriots, and our VAST possibilities? YES!!! Yes, we SHOULD!!
The Steelers ~ who obviously lead the top teams of the Super Bowl Era ~ have a shot, yes, at adding to their glory by joining us atop the current Era, and if they do, more power to them...But can I have a nice big fat PHUCK THAT????
Your New England Football Patriots ~ even 4 years removed from their most recent Championship ~ are still acknowledged by rationale fans as The Alpha Team. More importantly, Coach Bill, far from bleeding his lead away, has invested so relentlessly in the future of this great club ~ each and every single year!! ~ that we have, going into 2009, by FAR the greatest Depth of Talent that this team has ever HAD!!
Incredibly, we are actually in a position ~ thanks to an Harmonic Confluence of Youth, Experience, and STAGGERING Depth of Talent ~ to win not 1, not 2, but 3 Championships in a ROW!!!
And, OH...to take care of that 19-0 business, while we're at it.
Hey, idiot @ #10: I am a YANKEE, NOT a fan of the KnickerBocker Nine, you CHUMP.
If it ain't from New England, it ain't a Yankee. PERIOD.
And, no: there is NO room for interpretation on that one. Check your facts.
