FOXBOROUGH – Patriots coach Bill Belichick opened his morning press conference at Gillette Stadium (9:30 a.m.) with a tribute to Senator Ted Kennedy.

"To start off, I’d just like to say that I have a lot of personal regret today on the passing of Senator Kennedy. I send the condolences on behalf of the team to his family. He was really a guy that was personally supportive of this team and also of me.

“He sent me a personal note on numerous occasions, I’d say almost annually at the end of the year, congratulating us on our success, or sometimes when things didn’t go the way we wanted them to, notes of encouragement and that kind of thing. Of course, he was there for our trips to Washington and things like that.

“He was a great senator from a great family in this area. He certainly had an impact on all of us in one way or another. His leadership and his courage were certainly something that I personally always looked up to, and I know meant a lot to the people in this state, as well as the entire nation.”

  1. Ted Kennedy is champion for us the 153 millions working poor Caucasian adults and their families: among us: 93% postal workers, 92% plumbers, 91% trash collectors, 90% construction labors, 89% carpenters, 87% chefs, 86% of farmers, 81% of auto mechanics 78% of retail clerks, 75% of emergency dispatchers, etc.
WE are the backbone of America, we are the working poor Caucasian adults. We love Ted Kennedy. We have nothing but debt, debt and debt, Without Ted Kennedy, many of our would starving and sleep on streets.
Ted: WE the 153 millions underclass Caucasian adults will remember you forever !!!!

  1. I am going to hold back on my personal feelings out of respect for the dead. But I will say that Ted Kennedy is the poster child for why we should have term limits in the Senate.

  1. I agree with Belichick. The world lost a statesman today. Everyone one of us in MA, Democrat or Republican, liberal or conservative, have benifitted in some way from having Edward M. Kennedy as our senator.

As the WaPo's Dan Balz said today:

"Kennedy was steadfast in his political ideology. He was the champion of the poor, the downtrodden, the weak and dispossessed. He battled for the causes of civil rights and women's rights and health care and education spending. He believed in the power of government, whether it was in or out of fashion, as a force for change and for good. He voted against the resolution authorizing the Iraq war and remained one of the war's fiercest critics."

I'm ashamed of any Patriot fan who would denigrate Senator Kennedy today. Anyone doing so is classlass!!

  1. I can understand why Republicans would hate Senator Kennedy's policies but I presume most of you claim to be religious to some degree. What would Jesus say to such vindictive thoughts? Disagree with his politics but leave the man to his maker.

  1. Because he has just passed, I'll limit my comment to the primary reason I tended to dislike him: there is a huge disparity between his wealthy, priviledged lifestyle and those who he felt should be forced to shoulder the cost of his various causes -- namely us, the working middle class. Hey #10, what's up with quoting some cheesy, liberal, Washington Post columnist -- as if he were a great thinker?

  1. Typical...it's always the haters on the right-wing who are completely devoid of class or decorum. Politeness seems to be a virtue all but vanished from our public discourse, and the extremist right-wing (abetted by Fox News) is the principle reason for that.

Interestingly, BB is a conservative, but even he acknowledges Kennedy's contribution to our way of life.

    R.I.P.

  1. Republicans can say whatever flith they want about democrats because theya re all Godless heathens who kill children and support commies. If a liberal says boo to the passing of a conservative icon (hopefully Dick Cheney) we are Godless animals, but the right can say whatever it wants because theya re tru Patriots.

    Well said coach Belichick.

  1. I'm sure people felt this sad when that girl drowned as good old Ted ran away form the car he crashed to avoid a DUI charge...by the way I'm still waiting for the man slaughter charge to come to Ted....the same charge that would be nailed to anyone in Mass not named Kennedy.

Kennedy makes Vick and Stallworth look like saints.

  1. It's good thing BB has more class than some of you posters.

As a republican who often disagreed with Kennedy's politics, I still appreciated the work and the efforts he gave for his causes. He was well respected by the republicans in Congress. I can disagree with the guys ideals, but still agree he was a good senator.

  1. #12.

You're right. Talk is cheap. Here is a sample of Ted Kennedy DID for the middle class:

    -Children's Health insurance Program
    -The Americans With Disabilities Act
    -Medicare & Medicaid
    -The Civil Rights Act
    -Family Leave Act

That's a small sample, let's also not forget his leadership on peace in Ireland which led to Northern Ireland’s 1998 Good Friday peace accord.

The man was a tireless and knowledgeable fighter for all Americans. his legislative efforts made this country a better place for everyone. Unlike a lot of other political scions (GWB), he actually accomplished something.

Well said. some people don't understand the things that Kennedy championed or realize that many of the things that they take for granted they would not have if not for his tireless work in the Senate. I don't condone any of his trangressions, but at least I can see what he accomplished. Whatever his motives, there are may things that we should be greatful that he was watching over and fighting for. I'm afraid that we will not have an advocate for the "little guy" now that he has passed.

  1. Well, I guess there are term limits after all.

It's better for us all if we keep politics out of football.

  1. One has to believe that there is a special place in hell reserved for such uninformed haters as Fanatical Yankee, Ryan, Moss4life, Mike k, etc. Comments like theirs make me feel ashamed for America -- that our way of life is producing values like theirs. For a spit second -- but only for a split second - those comments made me wish that freedom of speech was not a constitutional right.

Regardless of his politics, for many decades Ted Kennedy steadfastly conducted himself with dignity and class and represented the people of Massachusetts with those same qualities along with passion and conviction. The people he debated the hardest against -- his republican colleagues -- loved the guy. His closest friend in the senate was a Republican. They knew him better than than all the critics, respected his views as he did theirs, and in the end even they knew his true value.

  1. Many comments here say a lot about the kind of folks whose level of compassion is limited to football...or with their mirrors.

Belichick did the right thing. Good on you Bill.

Compassion for the man, that what it may be, should never negatively replace, compassion for the family who bear the loss.

  1. You're all mindless idiots. I'm not even American and I know what a great statesman he was. He's just passed away, and you're bad-mouthing his memory. And on an NFL blog, of all places. You're disgusting. No-one said you had to like him, or appreciate his career. But please, show some respect for the dead.

Or better yet, take a cue from your team's HC. He knows America lost a great leader.

where do people who let other people drown so they can avoid DUI charges go? To heaven? I'm sorry, the man passed but he gets no free pass on the criminal charges he performed and ran away from. Both Vick and Stallworth served their time in jail, kennedy did not even serve a single minute.

  1. I can't say that I always agreed with all of Senator Kennedy's words and actions, but I will say this about him. He didn't change his political views to be popular with anyone, and he seemed to me to be one of the last (if not THE last) member of Congress who truly tried to represent the people who voted for him and not special interest groups. He had many failings, true enough, but as BBaptiste pointed out, he did many things to try to benefit those who needed help the most, and in that respect he will be truly missed.

  1. Kudos to the Globe: While I condemn their censorship of my original post, I can certainly understand it, as I accused Kennedy The Big M, and they've got Liability to think of...And they had the integrity to allow my other posts, as well as those of others, which were downright nasty!

MIND you: This is in no way to recant my nastiness. Edward Kennedy, in my opinion, led as reprehensible, contemptible, and despicable a life as one can, and committed The Unspeakable.

When Jimmy Carter dies, I will have nothing bad to say about him. I think his political decisions were anti-American, and that he was, unwittingly, a dupe of America's enemies. But his INTENTIONS were ~ and are ~ unflaggingly Honorable, and Jimmy Carter has always been a man of Honor, Integrity...and Kindness.

By the same notion, I find Teddy's body of work, politically, to be HORRIFICALLY damaging to my beloved America, and to the reputation of my beloved Massachusetts...and I consider his motivations neither honest nor honorable.

But such is not enough to warrant dancing on his Grave.

His actions at Chappaquidick...where any rational person would agree he committed The Unspeakable...WERE.

  1. Thanks Coach Belichick for showing the class and dignity to respect the passing of a man who helped literally millions of Americans during his life. Thanks for briefly pausing from the self-absorbed world of professional sports to acknowledge a story that is MUCH bigger than sports (and this is coming from a HUGE Sports and Patriots Fan).

It makes me sad that I've heard people through the years that have demonized Ted Kennedy; as an awful human being. As if he is on par with Osama Bin Ladin, Ted Bundy and Adolf Hitler (oh, wait that's President Obama...) His critics desparately want to reduce the man's ENTIRE life to the tragic car accident in Chappaquidick. While, no one who knows the story will ever claim that he did not react in a tragically, inadequate way, there is a HUGE difference between making a tragic, unintentional mistake in a brief and horrible moment and DELIBERATELY trying to help people for an ENTIRE LIFETIME.

Dick Cheney nearly killed his friend during an accident. That is not why most people that dislike Vice-President Cheney feel the way they do. People get into car accidents. Some of them even panic initially and make bad decisions. This does not make them on par with a pre-meditated rapist or murderer. To listen to some people talk Ted Kennedy was WORSE than that.

I ask you what is a person supposed to do after a horrific ACCIDENT and a panicked decision afterwards? Are they supposed to live in exile the rest of their life? Are they supposed to kill themselves? To disavow their attempt to help others, because they made a tragic personal mistake? If the legal system, did not prosecute and imprison them, should they have imprisoned themselves? Should Dick Cheney have been charged with attempted murder for shooting his friend at close range?

For those of you whom are Christians (and especially Catholics), is rooting for Ted Kennedy to "BURN, baby! BURN!!!" part of Jesus' teaching I missed? Did I miss the passage in the Bible where Jesus rejoices in the tragic mistakes people make and celebrates and joyously hopes for the Damnation of those people; no matter how much that person may have lived a very caring, compassionate overall life. No matter how much repentance that person showed and how much they dedicate the rest of their lives to bettering the lives of those less fortunate than themselves.

But, I realize that tragically many of those who rejoice in the passing (and their desire for an awful outcome in the hereafter) of Senator Kennedy have their hearts so twisted with darkness that neither a combination of reason, compassionate, empathy or foregiveness will EVER be extended to someone who (I'm assuming) they disagreed with politically.

There are a lot of awful people in the world. Every day there are horrific acts of inhumanity committed by human being DELIBERATELY done over and over again without regret and remorse. To take your time to write such hateful words, literally less than 24 hours after the passing of a flawed but deeply caring and incredibly accomplished man is something I can not understand. Fortunately, I know that the majority of people (even those who completely disagreed with Senator Kennedy's policies) would not spew some unproductive and hurtful venom before the man is even laid in the ground.

Bottom line: I just want to say thank you to Senator Kennedy for a life very well lived. I want to thank him for helping SO many people who were less fortunate than him. I pray for his family and friends during this sorrowful time and I pray that his best instincts (compassion, empathy, kindness for his fellow man) are embraced by the next generation of Americans.

God Bless you and may you Rest In Peace.

  1. Hah! What a bunch of pathetic squealing!!!

If you Bleating Hearts ever took the time to investigate the facts, as I have, you'd know that Kennedy DELIBERATELY waited 9 to 10 HOURS to report the accident, and that his words and actions made it crystal clear ~ except to the gutless and stupid! ~ that his ENTIRE focus was on the accident's affect on HIM, and that he simply slunk away, and prayed that his buddies would get together with his family and find a way to cover it up...with not a WORD about Mary Jo, and whether she might be ~ even then! ~ fighting for her life!

It obviously comforts you fine folks to imagine that I have some kind of agenda, here, and am operating out of hatred. It obviously comforts you to describe me in the most vile terms, rather than summon an ounce of integrity, and take an honest look at your Hero...But I'm no Republican, any more than I'm a Democrat.

And unlike your sorry selves, I actually gave the man a fair and objective shake: I researched the entire history of the incident, something that any of you could've done, as the information is hardly a deep dark secret.

    What it IS...is HORRIFYING.

Y'all obviously don't want to believe that this colossal SCUMbag did what he did, but the evidence ~ very easy to find, if you chumps had the guts or the integrity ~ VAPORIZES anything resembling a reasonable doubt that this gutless weasel DELIBERATELY let her die. And only disgustingly gutless and dishonorable scum like yourselves would defend him. But, hey: Good luck with that.

Our founding fathers did not want senators and congressman to spend 50 years as a professional politician! Money and influence is what made Ted Kennedy. There are better people then this to honor in America.
