Former Patriot Vince Redd waived in KC

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff August 24, 2009 10:50 AM

Following up on a former Patriot, outside linebacker Vince Redd was waived today by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Redd was projected to be part of the Patriots' mix at outside linebacker, but he was waived Aug. 2.

"I just think where we are defensively, there are probably other teams that he might fit a little better schematically, with the skills that he has," coach Bill Belichick said at the time.

Redd was claimed by the Chiefs Aug. 4.

  1. Denver, here we come.

  1. Fortunately for Redd, he did graduate. Andy is correct as unfortunately for many others, they do not finish school, get cut and find out just how tough the world can be.

  1. Yeah, it's NEVER a good sign when you get waived by one of the worst teams in the league.

  1. Bruce, at least he tried and actually played in the NFL. Gonna bet you haven't accomplished anything close. I give him props for getting in the league.

  1. CJ, while I agree 100% with your sentiments about how hard it is even getting to the NFL, why the shot at Bruce M for what seems to me an innocent comment?

Granted, your retort is far from nasty, but I don't see Bruce implying he's any better than anyone else so why the insult?

Let's keep is civil - the regular season hasn't even begun!

  1. @CJ, sorry if you thought my comment was a shot at Vince. It was meant to show empathy for what was clearly a bad situation.

As it happens, however, I did play third in the WORLD Diplomacy (strategy board game), so I do have some notion of what it's like to compete at a high level (albeit a very different game). And, unlike football they they declare the best America team to be "World" champions, this tournament took 2.5 YEARS and included players from 20 countries.

I do wish Vince Redd the best. I'm just saying being cut by KC makes it hard to catch on elsewhere.

  1. Woo HOOOOOO!!!

    PRACTICE Squad, baby!!

Just another step in Vince Redd's twisted path to GLORY!!! ;p

  1. Sorry for the typo in my last post. I meant to say I PLACED third in the World Diplomacy tournament after 4 rounds over 2.5 years.

  1. Bruce M - we're cool. I'd give my left one just to have be able to do what Redd's done.

  1. Bruce M - I confess: I never heard of World Diplomacy before. The Wikipedia entry made me wonder why I hadn't. The topic fascinates me and devotees include JFK, Kissinger and Cronkite?

I briefly considered investigating further, but that would only detract from my devotion (addiction?) to this board...

  1. @mikeinNH Good call....Diplomacy is VERY time consuming at the tournament level (which is often play via email) and even face-to-face games can easily take 4 hours (unless you get killed quickly). I don't really play it these days....just ran out of time. However, if you have a chance to play it at least once, it's really different.

@CJ glad we're cool. Yes, I would have loved to play in the NFL too.

  1. Is the Diplomacy tourament based on the old Avalon Hill Game?

  1. I'm confused, what the h-e double hockey sticks are you fellas talking about? Never mind, gotta watch Super Rexx and his bad ass team. Redd could still make a comeback, UFL.

Posted by Bungeeman August 24, 09 08:24 PM
  1. @philbert Exactly. It's not "based on" that game, it *IS* that game. As @mikeinNH says, the Wikepedia has a good write up on it and the game is still sold today (on Amazon and other places). Have you played?

    Posted by Bruce M. August 24, 09 08:40 PM
  1. @philbert... it is indeed based on that game. And Diplomacy is like crack in slow motion -- it's super-addictive, but takes forever just to play a game and get your fix. I have to look the other way the (rare) times I see it on a store's shelves...

  1. Below is from the National Football Post earlier this eve...

When the Kansas City Chiefs cut outside linebacker Vince Redd earlier today, a routine announcement was made.

According to a league source, though, the situation is a bit more complicated than a simple roster move.

Redd has been suspended by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for the first four games of the regular season, per our source.

Redd is eligible to be signed by any team after he clears waivers and can play in preseason contests, but his suspension takes effect heading into the first week of regular-season games.

Redd had been acquired off waivers from the New England Patriots earlier this month, one day after being cut by the Patriots when they signed linebacker Rob Ninkovich.

  1. KC will pick up Tyson DeVree, you bet

Posted by MarkJ August 25, 09 01:36 AM
  1. @ David B --

Yeah. I saw that, too. Could factor into why the Pats cut him so abruptly, or seemed to.
