In researching a few Patriots-related nuggets for the Boston Globe Sunday football notes, I came across this one: Since 2005, the Patriots and Raiders have made six trades.
That makes the Raiders the most frequent trade partner over the last five years.
A look at the deals (with a quick-hit thought):
April 24, 2005 -- Patriots trade a 2005 sixth-round draft choice (175th overall) in exchange for a 2005 seventh-round draft choice and 2006 fifth-round draft choice. Patriots pick Matt Cassel with seventh-rounder.
Sept. 2, 2006 -- Patriots trade a 2007 fifth-round draft choice in exchange for WR Doug Gabriel. Gabriel doesn't make it through a full season with New England.
April 28, 2007 -- Patriots trade a 2007 third-round draft choice (91st overall) in exchange for a 2008 third-round draft choice and 2007 seventh-round draft choice. Patriots weren't enamored with quality of '07 draft and wanted to push picks into the next year.
April 29, 2007 -- Patriots acquire WR Randy Moss in exchange for a 2007 fourth-round draft choice. It now looks like grand larceny, but the Raiders had no other market for Moss.
April 25, 2009 -- Patriots acquire a 2009 second-round pick (40th overall) in exchange for a 2009 second-round pick (47th overall), 2009 fourth-round pick and 2009 sixth-round pick. Patriots gave up some chips to move up the board to put themselves in position to select Ron Brace/Darius Butler back to back.
August 6, 2009 -- Patriots acquire DE Derrick Burgess in exchange for a 2010 third-round pick and a 2010 fourth-round pick. If the Patriots acquire a 2010 fifth-round pick, the fifth-rounder will be shipped to Oakland instead of the fourth-rounder. Patriots needed pass-rush help and Burgess was holding out in Oakland; Raiders had a market for Burgess and thus had some leverage to up the trade terms.
While I'm certainly not disputing the value that Moss brought to the Patriots, I think it's important to remember that he wasn't going to produce in Oakland what he did with Tom Brady in here in New England - I also don't think he'd have produced half as much in Green Bay, the only other suitor for Randy Moss that year. At that stage in his career, Brett Favre wasn't Tom Brady's equal anymore.
The Patriots traded for a receiver who was averaging 500-1000 yards and 5-10 touchdowns, and came as an unknown who was considered by most teams to be "risky"
On the other trades, seeing the Patriots pick players that look good with picks we get from Oakland and assuming we pulled a fast one assumes that Oakland would have chosen the same player, which quite frankly isn't true. If they don't see someone they want, they trade the pick to us and we pick a guy we want in OUR system.
Hindsight is 20/20
April 28, 2007 -- Patriots trade a 2007 end-of-third-round draft choice (91st overall, for OT Mario Henderson, now a third year backup tackle at Oakland) in exchange for a 2008 third-round draft choice (69th overall) and a 2007 seventh-round draft choice. The reason given, "Patriots weren't enamored with quality of '07 draft" isn't the half of the story. The Patriots simply wanted to move up to 69th, from where they moved up to #47 via San Diego, from where they moved up to #40 this year to get Ron Brace. Mario Henderson for Ron Brace?
Mario Henderson is now Oakland starting LT this season not a backup. He also more than held his own starting against three of the best pass rushers in the NFL last season. Brace hasn't played a down in the NFL yet and it remains to be seen what he can do. Right now The Raiders are winning that deal. As for Burgess, good luck, the guy is on the downside of his career. injury prone and terrible against the run. We need more youth, especially on the defensive side of the ball and now we have some extra picks to beef up.
Thats the problem with these comments...You alwys find somebody that makes comments that border on massive stupidity !! We definetly needed an outside linebacker with speed from the edge to replace Vrable.....We got a linebacker that was ALL-PRO for two years playing that position and some lonewolf doesn't think he's good enough !!!! Great moniker ....you have to be real lonely getting someone else to agree with your moronic comments !!He was injured last year !!! So what !! ..Its a PHYSICAL GAME !@! He will have a terrific positive effect on our defense !! He's quick, tough, knowlegeble, and talented....Ask the people who voted him All Pro for two years !@!!
Yahoo sports listed Mario Henderson as a backup. And not just any backup -- a backup for 5-11 Oakland. Perhaps at least some of the starters on that team aren't any good?
Having no other information on the guy, I'll accept Lonewolf's forecast that Henderson will start for Oakland this coming year.
A little late but I think we forgot the "traded pick" to bring Bill B. here.
