FINAL: PATRIOTS 27, REDSKINS 24
Stephen Gostkowski booted a 31-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining to lift the Patriots over the Redskins, 27-24, in exhibition action at FedEx Field.
The drive covered 11 yards in three plays over 1:31.
CHUNG's RETURN
Rookie Pat Chung shook free on a 33-yard punt return to set up the Patriots at the Redskins 23 with under two minutes to go.
BRADY: SORE SHOULDER
It was announced in the press box that Tom Brady has a "sore shoulder."
CHALLENGE: CHRIS TAYLOR FUMBLE
A coach's challenge found that Patriots running back Chris Taylor fumbled after a hit by H.B. Blades and referee Walt Coleman ruled Byron Westbrook made a clear recovery, which awarded the ball to the Redskins at their 10.
END OF 3rd QUARTER: Tied, 24-24
Kevin O'Connell labored through a third quarter in which he completed as many passes to the opposition as he did to his teammates. O'Connell is 2 of 6 for 17 yards with a pair of interceptions since replacing Tom Brady at the start of the second half.
PATRIOTS 24, REDSKINS 24 (0:10, 3rd)
Marko Mitchell hauled in a 33-yard touchdown pass from Colt Brennan to tie the game late in the third quarter.
The drive covered 44 yards on five plays over 2:41. The short field came as a result of a Kevin O'Connell interception.
O'CONNELL INTERCEPTED AGAIN
Patriots quarterback Kevin O'Connell was intercepted by Washington cornerback Kevin Barnes. Out of the shotgun formation, O'Connell rolled to his right and fired to the sideline for Sam Aiken, but Barnes made a nice grab.

PATRIOTS 24, REDSKINS 17 (7:45, 3rd)
Patriots cornerback Jonathan Wilhite stepped in front of a Colt Brennan offering (intended for D.J. Hackett) and took the interception 99 yards the other way for a touchdown. The Redskins were facing third and goal at the Patriots 3.
O'CONNELL INTERCEPTED
Kevin O'Connell was intercepted by Redskins safety LaRon Landry on the Patriots' first possession of the second half. The pass, intended for Chris Baker, was deflected before it was picked off.
O'CONNELL IN, BRADY OUT
Kevin O'Connell is on the field replacing Tom Brady at quarterback on the Patriots' first possession of the second half.
Brady, who appeared to possibly tweak his right shoulder late in the first half, does not appear to be on the bench as this possession begins. Brady was spotted on the sideline to start the half before returning to the locker room.
PENALTIES
After the teams combined for 11 penalties in the first half (Redskins 8, Patriots 3), the Patriots were flagged for offsides on the opening kickoff of the second half.
HALFTIME: Patriots 17, Redskins 17
Washington kicker Dave Rayner booted a 25-yard field goal on the final play of the first half as the Redskins and Patriots went to the locker room knotted at 17.
The drive covered 51 yards on nine plays over 1:57.
Quick first-half stats: QB Tom Brady -- 12 of 19, 150 yards, 2 TDs; WR Randy Moss -- 6 receptions, 90 yards, 2 TDs; RB Laurence Maroney -- 5 carries, 19 yards.
BUTLER SHAKEN UP
Patriots defensive back Darius Butler was shaken up on a wide receiver screen late in the first half. Butler eventually walked off flanked by trainers.
![]() Campbell's TD run. |
PATRIOTS 17, REDSKINS 14 (3:04, 2nd)
Jason Campbell scrambled in on a 4-yard touchdown run to cap a 7-play, 91-yard scoring drive over 3:38. Campbell eluded the rush and got linebacker Paris Lenon to leave his feet with a pump fake in order to clear a final lane.
Lenon previously made a nice 1-on-1 tackle on Marcus Mason on first and goal and Leigh Bodden followed by breaking up a fade pass to Malcolm Kelly.
Chris Cooley's zig-zagging 73-yard reception set up the score.
BURGESS WITH PRESSURE
Derrick Burgess applied pressure to quarterback Jason Campbell and forced a throw-away on a second-and-3 play at the Washington 27. The Redskins punted two plays later.
PATRIOTS 17, REDSKINS 7 (9:20, 2nd)
Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski booted a 43-yard field goal to cap a seven-play, 47-yard drive that spanned 3:46.
A pass interference penalty on tight end Chris Baker negated a Randy Moss catch that would have given the Patriots a new set of downs at the Washington 12. New England settled for the field goal.
CHUNG GETS ANOTHER SHOT
Pat Chung got another chance on the punt return and made a (pretty) clean catch and returned a 50-yard boot 8 yards.
Without Julian Edelman and Wes Welker dressed for tonight's game, the Patriots almost have to give Chung an opportunity to overcome his early miscues.
![]() Moss celebrates a TD. |
PATRIOTS 14, REDSKINS 7 (14:53, 2nd)
On the first play of the second quarter, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady connected with wide receiver Randy Moss on a 27-yard touchdown pass -- their second TD of the game. The scoring drive covered 84 yards on nine plays over 4:51.
END OF 1st QUARTER: Patriots 7, Redskins 7
The Patriots, aided by a 15-yard facemask penalty on a Randy Moss swing pass that initially came up short of the first-down marker, are on the move at the Washington 27 when play resumes in the second quarter.
Tom Brady was 8 of 11 passing for 95 yards and a TD in the first frame. Randy Moss has five catches for 63 yards.
CHUNG FUMBLES PUNT ... AGAIN
Patriots rookie defensive back Pat Chung fumbled a punt for the seconds straight week, this one bouncing off his helmet. Also for the second straight week, fellow rookie defensive back Darius Butler bailed him out by recovering the fumble.
PATRIOTS 7, REDSKINS 7 (5:54, 1st)
The Patriots respond quickly as Randy Moss hauls in a 26-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady as part of a seven-play, 73-yard trek that took 4:12.
Brady also completed a 20-yard pass to Joey Galloway on the drive and the Patriots averted disaster when Laurence Maroney recovered his own fumble earlier in the drive.
Brady is 4 of 6 passing for 68 yards with the TD.
POWER PACKAGE
On their second series, the Patriots lined up with Matt Light an eligible tight end in a power package that featured David Thomas at fullback in short-yardage situation. The play went to the opposite side of Light with Laurence Maroney picking up the first down on a 3-yard carry.
REDSKINS 7, PATRIOTS 0 (10:06, 1st)
The Redskins easily marched down the field against the Patriots' first-team defense and Darius Butler's pass interference penalty set up Marcus Mason's 1-yard touchdown plunge. The drive covered 69 yards on seven plays over 3:37.
WILHITE SHAKEN UP; JOGS OFF
During the Patriots' first defensive series, Jonathan Wilhite appeared temporarily shaken up after helping make a stop on a pass over the middle to Antwaan Randle El. Wilhite -- who wore the red non-contact jersey during practices earlier this week -- was attended to by trainers, but jogged off the field.
STARTERS
Colleague Mike Reiss provides the starters:
NOT-SO SPECIAL TEAMS
The Redskins were forced to re-boot the opening kickoff due to an offside penalty. Washington tripped up Matthew Slater for a short return on the nullified attempt, but Laurence Maroney broke free on a 35-yard return. The Patriots couldn't take advantage going 3-and-out.
On the punt, Matthew Slater got flagged for fair catch interference.
PREGAME
Patriots call tails and win the toss; they will receive to start the game. Jerod Mayo and Sam Aiken represented the team during the coin flip.
The Patriots are wearing their blue tops (typically reserved for home games).

Pats D again looks like crap. Can't cover anyone. What else is new? LOL
Get rid of Slater... Awful..The d looked so bad
yeah!!!! Let's not give Wilfork an extension. The guy has been a force thus far tonight.
The rookies are playing like, drumroll please, rookies...
Slater will not be a Patriots for long given his string of mistakes.
Running is absolutely non-existent to this point. Very disheartening.
Ok, both looking a bit better now. Like that. Pressure on the QB and all.
Yeah guys when pundits review the season they'll say it all went downhill in the preseason Game 3. Everyone on the team sux, right?
Want to know what's pathetic? I'm writing this while the game is on.
Agree on Slater.
Disagree on defense. They look good and are all around the ball and getting good pressure on the stiff quarterback.
run D is looking great...good pressure on the QB...secondary has been iffy...overall though, the D has looked pretty good...decent pressure; stopping the run...offensively, we're fine....Maroney in space is a play maker; otherwise Taylor is the better pure running back (but we already knew that)
Can they please remove Chung from Punt Returner. He doesn't seem to have the poise to wait for the ball nor does he seem to have the explosive cut and run that is needed for the job. Too bad we don't have someone else who can do it.. oh yeah? We've got Edelmen. He seems to have the qualifications...
So where is welker again????
That gaffe right there Paris Lenon is your ticket out of town. Thanks for coming out. You gotta break down and blast the QB right there!
What was paris lennon trying to accomplish? Jumping?
The defensive secondary is god awful. somebody help them
we need to dial up more blitzes to create pressure...Wilhite on the corner blitz was nice; refreshing...overall, our pass defensive is weak...QB often has too much time...if we go anywhere, it will be due to our offensive prowess (big surprise, i know)
Have to agree on Slater... he looks like he's not long for the team. Very poor preseason for him.
Paris Hilton would have at least run through the QB!
Bruschi made a costly mistake. He let Cooley get behind him and gave the Skins hope. I'm not surprised he isn't a starter this year.
The rush D looks good, the Pass rush looks good, and the pass D looks ok.
another team's starting qback having all the time to pick apart that joke of a secondary. Defense wins championships.
Praying to the Football Gods for Brady's shoulder. Paris Lennon made a bad choice, but watch Tully Banta on that play.
i cant believe slater is still a patriot lol the guy does nothing right. reminds of of caldwell ::cringes::
our secondary is terrible at best
Going_the_Distance, did you SEE the play that went for 70yds?
The blitz is what cost them, leaving too few people in coverage. It's a high-risk, high-reward play and I think Wilhite's interception was more of a credit to him realizing that the Redskins were determined to run an out to the flats (they'd done one the play before for an incompletion where the ball was overthrown and Wilhite jumped the route but didn't get it).
anybody who gets wound up over these pre-season games needs to get their head examined
RIESS TELL ME YOU DIDN'T SIGN ONTO ESPN TO WRITE FOR THEM WHEN THEY OPEN ESPN.BOSTON!!!!!! COME ON!! i mean i dont blame u for getting paid, you freaking deserve it. but NOOOOOOOO ESPN COME ON. THEY'RE ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE.
Does anyone else think that Kevin O'Connell is unspeakably bad? Last week's 2 minute drill was an absolute joke, and in this game he's completed 2 passes to both teams.
And Slater might be the worst kickoff returner in the league, even without his constant mistakes... I really hope he's gone.
its so funny reading these comments, its a preseason game, calm down, the pats will be fine.
O'Connell looked awful.
Slater was excellent in coverage, though. I like him. As a whole, this was a bad game.
brady got a separated shoulder...see u in 2010.
#25 sums it up perfectly....though I can't shake the feeling the Pats look more and more like the 2003 Colts.
"sore shoulder"?? Isn't that exactly what they called Brady's partially separated shoulder in 2002, Mike? This does not sound good.
Mike--congrats on espn.boston!
Taylor is so gone.
OOOH my shouldergina is soar.
Let's hope all Brady has done is reaggravate the shoulder injury that landed him on the injury report for three straight years. You know, that vague, seemingly non-debilitating injury that never seemed to stop him from winning a superbowl or two.
slater has no vision on kickoff returns
Any reason why at 12:45am we can't get an update on Brady and what Bellickick and/or Brady said after teh game? What is the point of sending Chris Forsberg, Chris Gasper and Reiss to DC if they can't file a report by now? The game ended well over an hour ago!
I get fired up at preseason like the rest of Pats nation, but it's appropriate to keep these games in it's proper context. Most coaches take chances or test different plays/sets out to see how his players respond in those situations so times where we all out blitz and Cooley goes for 70 will most likely not be replicated in regular season game action. Pass defense, with Springs, will be much better than you see in preseason especially with Bodden looking like a solid shut down option on the other side. Wilhite is still learning, but you see his talent and he will be great in the slot covering third receivers. Overall, we have a great team and we all know that BB will field the best team that he can and put his players i nthe best position to make plays. Let the regular season begin.
