Nick Kaczur's extension

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff August 24, 2009 05:01 PM

The following are details from Nick Kaczur's contract extension, which extends through 2012:

The base salaries are as follows:

2009: $2 million
2010: $2.7 million
2011: $3.4 million
2012: $4.1 million

The deal includes an option bonus of $3.5 million. It is not known when the option bonus is due, but there is a clause in the contract that says if the option is not exercised, Kaczur's base salary would jump to $2.72 million in 2009.

That seems to mean that Kaczur's option bonus is due at some point this year.

Kaczur also has workout bonuses of $100,000 in 2010, 2011, and 2012.

  1. Hey Mike,

What are the salaries of some of our other offensive linemen? I think that would help put into perspective what this extension means for how the Patriots value Kaczur compared to other linemen.

  1. How are you able to get the details of the contract - is there some disclosure issue with the NFLPA or great reporting.

  1. Seems generous, based on this fan's simple perspective. Makes you wonder how much of a drop off there would be between Kaczur and some of the other OT's on the roster, and whether the Pats would get a bigger return by using some of the money to add to whatever they're offering Wilfork

  1. 2009 Salaries
    Light - 4,250,000
    Mankins - 1,400,000
    Koppen - 2,400,000
    Neal - 2,500,000

  1. Apparently Kaczur holds more value to the organization than Mankins....Seymour....WILFORK?!

  1. Scott, according to Miguel's site, Matt Light signed a 6 year deal in 2004 worth $27M. If he plays next year (he's due $4.7M), then that averages out to about $4.5M/yr. Remember, that was in 2004 dollars, where the salary cap was significantly lower than it is now.

To put it in perspective, the contract Joe Staley just signed is 9yr/$43M with $18M guaranteed. Granted, Kaczur is no Staley, but this appears to be a pretty reasonably-priced contract for a starting OT these days (unless there's additional bonus money beyond the option bonus).

  1. At first glance this seems to be a reasonable deal. I am confused about what an "option bonus" is. Seems like there are no guarantees and Kaczur has maned up and said, "let my playing do the talking"! If this is the case then, I wish more players were like this.

  1. It probably means that he would not be with the club for 2012 if he were to make 4.1 million for that year. For the first 2 or 3 years he is in the same ballpark as what he had signed for previously.
    .
But Mankins will be very expensive given Kazcur's extension money.

  1. Drew - With his new contract, Kazcur will make LESS than Wilfork this year. Wilfork is looking for top NT money...$10+ a year. Kazcur's deal has NOTHING to do with Vince.

  1. A dirt cheap extension.

  1. That's only a little more than $3 million a year. for a starting right tackle that was rated amongst the best last season, not bad at all.

  1. I guess that Kraft's comments about future uncertainty only applies to some players. Hi there Vince Wilfork. Such forthrightness

  1. Just Two Words. TOO MUCH.

  1. You can't compare this deal to Wilfork or Seymour. If either of those guys were willing to sign for even twice this amount the deal would already be done. However, they're looking at 3 or 4 times this.

For them to be able to lock up a tackle for what is not exactly a marquee deal this soon after signing all draft picks I feel strongly that the organization was able to get a slight discount on what could have been. There was no obligation to sign an extension but the point is he's going to be a Patriot during his prime.

If the team could sign any of these three for that kind of money it would have been done long ago.

Kraft makes more money selling Hot Dogs and Nachos than it took to sign Kaczur.

  1. For those Pats fans concerned that Kazcur's extension was agreed to before an extension for Wilfork was finalized, WILFORK AIN'T SIGNING FOR $2 MIL A YEAR IS HE?

  1. All this means is that Stephen Neal and Matt Light need to decide who's going to play for less $$ when Sebastian Vollmer takes over LT... Light can shift to the right side and dump Kaczur inside or it's bye bye Matt Light.

  1. Are you kiddin'? How can the Pats continue to neglect what is obviously the best lineman they ever had since John Hanna? They can't let Logan Mankins get away. If they wait to long, next year we will likely see him wearing a Broncos uniform!
