O'Connell, Hodel released

Posted by Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff August 31, 2009 11:11 AM

The Patriots confirmed the release of quarterback Kevin O'Connell today, and also released veteran long-snapper Nathan Hodel.

The departure of Hodel appears to signal that rookie Jake Ingram has won the long-snapping job.

  1. @Al: Haha.

@the Globe folks: When would we find out "if" a team has put in a waiver claim on O'Connell?

  1. Belichick must have all the confidence in the world in his line.

    Congrats, Jake.

  1. Patriots seem to be ahead of schedule on trimming the team to the starting roster. This shows that the Patriots are a classy team, allowing players a chance to make it to another team in time to show their worth during the preseason.

  1. Must be a lot of upside to Andrew Walter?
Hoyer is clearly going to the practice squad, no doubt.
I would be very surprised if he's ahead of Walter,
    to which I doubt.
I would not be surprised come the 1st game we see a lot
of running plays and screens. Moss, Welker and Galloway
on the field at the same time will scare any defense coordinator and alter
the scheme. I can see this in forms of stretch plays and hand the ball off
to Fred Taylor, Morris, or Maroney, whoever is in the backfield at the time. Teams would have to be crazy to put Moss in single coverage.
Once Galloway is fully acclimated in offense things will get very interesting.
I hope the patriots are not hasty to start lighting up opposing teams.
Play smart and consistent, play as a unit, run the football, but keep
the defense honest by smart distribution of the football, eat the clock up
and keep the patriot defense off the field and fresh.
