Offseason program winners

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff August 12, 2009 06:20 AM

Offensive lineman Nick Kaczur has been one of the Patriots' more consistent players this training camp, holding down his spot at right tackle. Kaczur's foundation was built this offseason when he was named one of the team's nine offseason program award winners.

“It’s all about getting better and doing what you can to help the team win games,’’ Kaczur says in Wednesday's editions of the Boston Globe. “At the same time, it’s nice to be recognized by the coaches.’’

Offseason award winners are rated in a number of different areas among their position groups, with attendance and improvement from last season part of the consideration.

Here is the full list of Patriots winners this year:

  • K Stephen Gostkowski
  • OT Nick Kaczur
  • LB Jerod Mayo
  • RB Sammy Morris
  • G Stephen Neal
  • S James Sanders
  • TE Benjamin Watson
  • WR Wes Welker
  • DL Mike Wright

    1. That has to be good news for Watson, given the suggestion that he might get caught in the numbers game at tight end.

The less said about a kicker being one of the best trainers of the offseason though, the better.

    1. Hi Mike, thanks again for providing my play by play of Patriots preseason. What are your thoughts on Nick Kaczur not receiving any NFL sanctioned punishment for his Oxycontin drug dealing? Seems like a pretty standard violation of Player Personal Conduct.

      Thanks,
      Cheez

    1. Dan:

Obviously, you've never studied pharmacology. All else being equal, a guy Kaczur's size could easily need twice the dose of pain medication that an average person needs just to get any relief, and that's just talking about first doses, let alone what might happen if someone develops tolerance/addiction to it.

More importantly, the CBA specifically ties the commissioner's hands when it comes to offenses involving drugs.

    1. good to see mayo on the list.

Kaczur, Watson, Neal and Gostkowski are free agents in 2010.

    1. So it appears that there is one and only guy from each position group. But there is no one from the CB and QB positions. Is that because not only was there no real competition for the award among CBs and QBs, but no one even met the basic qualifications? Assuming that rookies and new FAs do not qualify, does this say anything about Willhite, Wheately, and KOC?

    1. It's cool to always know that a guy like Wes Welker is always busting his butt. Thats why every pats fan loves the guy!

    1. This comment is in response to # 5 "Gick".

When you're with Gisele, something is wrong with you if you WIN an offseason award.
