Old friends, new uniforms (Part II)

Posted by Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff August 19, 2009 04:00 PM

Near the start of training camp, we took a quick glimpse at key members of the 2008 Patriots offense who have latched on with new teams since leaving New England. Today, after spotting a photo of recently traded defensive end Le Kevin Smith with the Broncos, we shine the spotlight on the defense.

(Clockwise, from top left): Philadelphia's Ellis Hobbs, Denver's Le Kevin Smith, free agent Bo Ruud (who was recently released by the Browns), and Kansas City's Mike Vrabel.

Deltha O'Neal (right, photo courtesy of HoustonTexans.com) landed with Houston earlier this month, while another former Patriot defensive back, Lewis Sanders, remains a free agent... Ruud spent much of training camp with Cleveland before being released Monday when the team signed former New York Jets wide receiver Paul Raymond... Safety Rodney Harrison retired from football and took a job as an NFL commentator on NBC... Junior Seau and Rosevelt Colvin, late-season additions to the New England roster, remain out of football.

We'll check in with special teamers like Larry Izzo, Kelley Washington, and Lonnie Paxton later this summer.

  1. Expand the freak'n roster NFL! Maybe the Patriots could keep or bring back guys like Vrabel and Willie. We may be speaking with our hearts rather than our heads. I almost boycotted the Pats this year over the Vrabel trade. Almost....Heck, I want Junior and Rodney back and they were, yuk, long time Chargers. Thats the NFL for ya. Trust the Hoodie folks.

  1. Vrabel looks old and unhappy. Orange isn't his best color.
