Source: Brady's shoulder should be fine

Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff August 29, 2009 07:05 PM

A source close to the team said "there is no need for hysteria" regarding Tom Brady's right shoulder and that the shoulder is sore but it appears Brady will be fine.

Brady's throwing shoulder absorbed the brunt of a blow from Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth in the Patriots' 27-24 exhibition victory on Friday night.

The source said that there shouldn't be a lot of angst about Brady's health as the sore shoulder plays itself out, saying "there are not any concerns" at this time.

Brady, who played six series against the Redskins and was expected to play into the second half, did not play another down after Haynesworth drove him into the FedEx Field turf right shoulder first and then landed on top of him with the full force of his 6-foot, 6-inch 350-pound frame following an incomplete third-down pass to wide receiver Greg Lewis with 2:05 left in the first half.

Tight end Chris Baker helped Brady up by the right arm and the franchise QB walked to the sidelines, where television cameras caught him rotating the shoulder. The Patriots didn't get the ball back in the half, although Brady was seen throwing warm-up passes as Washington was driving.

The source said that common sense dictated not sending Brady back out in the second half.

"If it's sore there is no sense going out an antagonizing it," said the source.

  1. 'and was expected to play into the 2nd half' Expected by the media, nothing was ever said by Bill B or Tom B about whether he would or wouldnt play in the 2nd half. We've got a better chance of suddenly stumbling onto the truth about Area 51 than getting a straight answer out of the Patriots about Tom's shouder before he does/doesn't play the opening Monday night game.

Welcome to the 2nd coming of the 'Tom Brady - shoulder (probable)' era of the injury report.

  1. First off Brady is perfectly fine unless you consider bumps and bruises now against his health. Have we not watched this man take brutal shot after brutal shot in the past and get up and put on worse faces than that?

He wouldnt have even made it outside if the team doctors thought something was wrong with him. His shoulder has been sore for years and everyone honestly worried has not watched this man play.

  1. It's a shame this "story" comes at the expense of real insight into the game

  1. ""If it's sore there is no sense going out an antagonizing it," said the source."

Sounds like a trainer or doctor. I've never seen or heard the word "antagonize" used in the place of "aggravate" when discussing a medical condition. If this is the case, that source is well placed.

The common sense test, folks: Baker helped Brady to his feet right after the hit by taking Brady's right hand and pulling Tom up. If Brady were really hurt, he likely couldn't have done this.

Also, Brady stayed in uniform on the sidelines during the 3rd and 4th quarters. A serious injury would have forced to him to a hospital. And he was wearing the same uniform that he played in--there were stains on the shirt. A serious injury would have forced him to have the shirt and pads cut away for examination, esp. if he had experienced difficulty raising or rotating his arm.

Tempest in a teapot. Tom is a tough guy. He'll be fine.

  1. Well, i think there was "probable" on every single game for about 5 years, so there would not be any surprise. :D And I'm very positive that he would have played without any problem in the second half if it were a regular season game.

  1. who are these sources? Are they high levels? If BB wanted to hide the information i think he can probably figure out who the source is?

  1. It is nice to see someone (MAX) use a little logic. For crying out loud people, did anyone not see Brady throwing before the 3rd quarter!!!!!

  1. Realistically, what's an anonymous "source" going to say, anyway? Even if Brady's going to miss a few games, the source likely wouldn't say that, especially considering the hermetic seal the Patriots have on injury information. Personally, I'm not going to believe a word I read or hear about this situation (even from Brady himself). Actions always speak louder than words and I won't believe Brady's OK until I see him on the field.

  1. Matt:

Haynesworth and all his 350 lbs took down Brady, but the fall wasn't awkward and Brady adjusted his arm to lessen the impact. It's clear to me that Brady is not seriously injured. I believe Patriot Nation can rest easy now.

  1. Please let this "source" be more reliable than some other "sources" from years passed that shall remain unnamed !

  1. Brady's elbow slid as he went down which likely saved him and NE's season. I'm sure that hurt and may swell, but if his elbow did not slide it would have been a heck of a lot worse.
