TE Tyson DeVree released
The Patriots announced today that tight end Tyson DeVree has been released.
![]() Tyson DeVree (Globe File) |
A second-year player out of Colorado, he was the fifth player on the depth chart behind Chris Baker, Benjamin Watson, David Thomas, and Alex Smith.
DeVree (6 feet 6 inches, 245 pounds) was originally signed by the Patriots as a rookie free agent. He was a member of the Patriots’ practice squad for nine weeks last season before being signed to the 53-man roster. DeVree made his NFL debut at Seattle (12/7) and also played vs. Arizona (12/21).

he wasnt going to make the club anyway
Tyson will play somewhere this year. He made a decent showing in camp but got caught up in a numbers game of quality TE's on the roster this year. Baker's production in the exhibition games probably sealed DeVree's fate.
Mike Reiss' prognostication has the Pats dropping yet another TE, possibly leaving Alex Smith out of the mix, too.
This might just be a move to make some room for LB Adam Seward, who - without hyperbole - might be exactly what this team needs to push it into the stratosphere !
I have a feeling that Watson might be the next TE to go.
They let him go early enough to hook up with another team. At least they try and help a guy out.
Why do they hold onto Watson? As far as I can see, he is the second biggest bust on this team (Maroney is the clear-cut number one bust). Someone please help me out with what I am not seeing,
I would have sent Watson packing and kept Devree (more upside less money).
Well...KC or Denver probably needed him so Bill obliged his little doobies out west.

The Pats didn't need to cut DeVree to make room for anybody. They were already two under the 80-man limit before he was cut. The mandatory cut to 75 isn't till Sept. 1st, so they probably are giving DeVree a little advantage toward hooking up with a new team over some guys who won't be cut until the deadline.
Interesting, though, that it appears several teams are already below 80 and making cuts "early." I can't recall this happening in previous seasons, though it may have been more common than I realized.
RugBurn : "more upside" ? Watson, though he hasn't shown he can live up to it, has the biggest upside of all-time. He is huge, he is fast, blah, blah, blah... he looks good on paper. DeVree doesn't have more upside than Watson.
Having said that, he may outperform Watson (for whatever reason, Ben hasn't ever delivered...) but he can't out "upside" him.
PS - no one's gonna bite on my Adam Seward reference ?
Chill MaineMan, it was just a free opportunity to plug an Adam Seward refence. If you ever peruse the blogoshpere, BB's perceived man crush for Seward is a solid topic of humour and discussion...

I didn't even give a thought to the Seward thing. I was talking about open roster spots.
Hopefully Stone Hands 84 is the next to go.
Going to Kansas city ,Kansas city here I come, they got some crazy little women there and Tyson 's going to get him one!!!! Anyone here think he doesn't wind up in KC???
I agree with those that said that Belichick liked the kid and wanted to give him the best opportunity to hook up with another team. But so far the only TE who showed up to play has been Baker... if the rest of the list is it... we're in trouble!
Snacks your brutal dude, yet very funny. I still think it is to soon to give up on SH84. I have seen him "get er done".
