Terms of the Tyrone McKenzie deal

Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff August 25, 2009 07:27 PM

The Patriots announced today that they had come to terms with third-round pick Tyrone McKenzie, who suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his right knee during the team's rookie mini-camp in May.

According to a league source, McKenzie got a four-year deal worth $3.124 million and a $631,000 signing bonus.

Beyond the basic numbers, I'm hearing that there could be some unique and creative aspects to the deal that would allow McKenzie to recoup some of the money that the injury may have cost him.

The 6-foot, 2-inch, 243-pound McKenzie was the second of the Patriots' two third-round picks, taken No. 97 overall. He is the last of the Patriots' 12 draft picks to come to terms on a deal.

  1. What's classy about it? The Patriots agreed to negotiate in good faith in return for his participation in rookie minicamp, etc.

  1. Peter, from what I'm seeing here they're also giving him an opportunity to earn back some money he may have lost. Everyone who heard about this kid's background was heartbroken when he went down for the season - I'm glad to hear he's finally able to have something to show for all his very hard work!

  1. it's the story behind the player. this guy's been through 3 lifetimes of bad to reach this point, and I hope he makes a big impact next season for the Pats.

  1. I am pretty anxious to see how McKenzie turns out next year. Pretty glad to hear he was signed. This kid has faced as much personal adversity as Leon Powe and has continued to push forward towards his dreams.

It was telling that Belichick spoke highly of him after he was drafted.

  1. @Peter.

What is classy is that they made good on their promise.

Let's hope that he can recover from his ACL surgery if and when he has it and realize some of the value in years 2, 3 & 4.

  1. Good for Tyrone. I was excited when he was drafted about his potential. It will be a red shirt year for him and hopefully he will be able to contribute next year after Tedi retires with his 4th Super Bowl Ring.

  1. If they are going to work with him to get him the most money possible then that's a good organization. The kid will pocket $1.2 million for this year to rehab, study the defensive schemes and come to camp next year ahead the game.

  1. Peter, The Patriots could released him, no? How does this affect the cap this year? I think caraway DJ might be spinning the right tune!

  1. Its classy to build in a way for him to recoup money, instead of just sticking him with the injury split he would have gotten in a normal good faith deal.

  1. To clarify, the patriots were already committed to negotiate in good faith. That's a legally binding agreement rookies sign before coming to camp. "I'll camp to mini-camp withuot a contract, and if I get hurt you still negotiate with me based on my worth before the injury.

The "classy" part is has to do with his ability to recoup money lost to the injury split. Almost all contracts pay players a lower salary if the are put on IR, to varying degrees depending on when they are hurt. Giving Tyrone creative incentives to earn back some of the money he will lose due to the injury split is a class move, and one the Pats did not have to do.
