Training camp: Day 5

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff August 3, 2009 07:15 AM

The Patriots enter their fifth overall day of training camp, and they are scheduled for two practices (9:30 a.m. & 3:45 p.m.).

Patriots coach Bill Belichick lightened the load a bit on Sunday, with the second practice of the day a no-pads walkthrough. That broke a string of seven straight full-pads practices.

The early parts of the weekend were grueling.

"Days three and four are always the hardest days of training camp physically for the players. They are kind of hump days," Belichick explained Sunday. "[Once] you can get over this hump, then your body starts to get used to it. Hopefully, we can push through this weekend and then kind of get back and have a good start to the week on Monday and keep building on the foundation here that we’ve had on the first seven practices."

On a behind-the-scenes type of note, receiver Randy Moss is proving to at least one teammate that his impact stretches beyond the field.

Veteran Joey Galloway explained how in an interview with the Boston Globe.

  1. What about a story based on greater detail with respect to a Patriot player's day at camp. Years ago at UMass I was a ballboy, worked under George Luongo and enjoyed the entire close-up experience of observing professional athletes tackle these days of misery. From arriving for early AM breakfast, to a short respite before the training room, to practice to lunch, to respite and back to the training room and practice and later to supper followed by a few hours of socializing, these guys made it through. There are players with the personalitiy style that uplift the other guys and act to establish the "fun" and thus comraderie that makes each camp special and tolerable (for the players). Maybe recruit a ballboy!

  1. Mike-

So far you have wrote absolutely nothing about Welker and his struggles at camp. Also where is Ben Watson? Is this the year he finally gets cut?
