The Patriots have officially announced that they've signed free-agent quarterback Andrew Walter.

To make room for Walter, the team confirmed that Matt Gutierrez has been released.

Walter (6-6, 230) spent the last four seasons with Oakland. He entered the league in 2005 as a third-round draft choice out of Arizona State.

Walter has started nine of 15 games and completed 174 of 333 passes for 1,919 yards and three touchdowns. After spending his rookie season as the third quarterback in 2005, Walter saw significant action in 2006. He started eight of 12 games and completed 147 of 276 passes for 1,677 yards and three touchdowns. Walter saw action in three games with one start during the 2007-08 campaigns. Walter was waived by Oakland on July 30, 2009.

More analysis on this move to come.

  1. Sounds like Guit had reached his ceiling.

Walter at least has some NFL experience. You could do a lot worse at third string.

  1. Walter threw 3 touchdowns in 2006, but had 13 interceptions over that stretch and had a QB rating of 55. He had Randy Moss and Jerry Porter to throw to. He got beaten out of a job by JaMarcus. Hope that is not the experience he is bringing along with him.

  1. I think I remember Moss always having good things to say about Walter. I'll take him as a #3, get him from the worst franchise in the league to the best. If there's something there, the Pats will certainly get it out of him. Nice move.

  1. What the article fails to mention is his -13 career turnover ratio and 52% completion rate. granted he was on a terrible raiders squad but still...he's gonna make number 16 look bad in new england after matt cassel did such a great job

  1. I don't like this one at ll. 3 TDs in 9 starts? At least Gute had experience in the system and knew the offense.

  1. He might not break camp, other Vets will get cut during camp and the pats might carry two qb's, thought about that one probably not with Brady? Lots of bubble players, Call up ol' Troy Brown to play QB in a pinch!

  1. BB picked up on Ninkovich and, now, on Walter right quick after they become available, so one would think he's been scouting both for awhile. OTOH, it's doubtful that Gutes will get snatched up by some other team right away, so, if the Walter thing doesn't work out after a couple weeks, Gutes could be back.

  1. I am an Oakland fan and the offensive line scheme they had was from the 70's! That was the Art Shell and his bed and breakfast/mayor offensive coordinator. No quarterback would have found success in that system. Andrew's a good QB who needs a good program and he found it in New England. I wish him the best of luck!

  1. Nice height for a QB. Well, it's a start.

Here's what I said about another JAG, Jerome Gaffney. The guy might stick, or he might last 10 days and then get cast off for another JAG prospect. In the end Gaffney stuck. Nice call by Scott Pioli that time.

Anyways, I kind of like Walter's trashy credentials. CB Leigh Bodden comes to the Pats from 0-16 Detroit, where he had one interception all of last season. WR Randy Moss came from the odious Oakland Raiders, where he was a pox upon that team.

  1. You guys all seem to know more than B.B. about player selection.
    Bunch of losers.

  1. has anyone see brady drop back .. step forward and throw>??

Mike posted a blog a few days ago and there is a video clip of Brady in the full motion.. and he looked very awkward and ginger, obviously not fully recovered form his injury.

Whoever the #2 is on this team needs to get there act together and be prepared to start a few games this season.

  1. Watching this stiff with the Raiders, I especially remember that he plays s-l-o-w. Slow footwork, slow release, not a great arm. In simple terms...his fast twitch muscle function ain't happenin'.....

  1. Must be great being the coach and the GM- he's got a first and three second round picks next year, so he can deal with different people in different ways. But they need to get with the program, if they want to stay.

  1. Apparently manny had never heard of Dana Stubblefield or Jonathan Sullivan. Some of BB's pick up were duds.
Because manny never talked back to Mom, she gave him a little room in the attic.

  1. Manny, I'm with you, even if that means I'm a BB apologist. All these people questioning this move are probably the same people who were irate that the Pats kept Cassel on the roster last year, let alone as the backup. Between Brady and Cassel, I think Bill has proven that he knows alot more than us about who can play QB in his system, although I'm confident about Brady being fine this season, so call me a homer.

B R, I just checked through some videos and didn't see any video where he looked awkward. Can you post a link?

  1. Walter has been a class act while buying his time in Oakland....he has the frame of a QB, and certainly can throw the ball beyond 30yrds...the biggest concern is his very limited mobility...Favre looks like Vick compared to Walter (you get my drift... :)

Either way...Good Luck Andrew in NE

    From a Raider Fan.

  1. B R,
Nice try. We know you are a troll. I have seen him throw at full speed and he looked great. Go away.. You must have something better to do.
