Alex Smith released
The Patriots have released tight end Alex Smith, according to a league source. New England gave up a 2010 fifth-round pick to acquire Smith from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Smith was slow to pick up the Patriots offense and had one catch for 3 yards during the preseason.
Updated at 6:59 p.m. -- -- In the preseason, Smith had one catch for 3 yards, which came in the final preseason game against the Giants, instead of no catches as first reported.

Baker, Watson and Matthews in 2009.
time to retire #80 please
Not surprised. If Watson started the preseason without an injury he wouldn't even be mentioned as being considered as trade bait for a below average back-up QB.
Even if Watson drops passes every now and then, he is still a middle class man's Antonio Gates. I, like Bill, am not willing to give up on him because he had a bad season when Brady wasn't his QB.
Umm we gave up a 5th rounder for htis guy-- and are only getting a 7th for Thomas-- #'s do not add up-- Billy B is making some very odd moves-- letting Nunn go was also a big mistake.... jeezum!
how many guys are on the roster now?
Doesn't the player (A. Smith in this case) have to make the 53-man active roster for the Buc's to be eligible to receive the Pat's 5th rounder?
kinda strange moves don't ya think
If he didn't work out he didn't work out, the Pats pick up picks left and right so losing a 5th rounder for a player that did not work out is probably not that big of a deal.
How many picks do the Pats have in the first five rounds next year anyway?
This dude was not fit to wear the #80 jersey. What a waste of a fifth rounder
Puking away a 5th rd pick to TB and now we give away a warm body for a 7th pick that can't play for another two freaking seasons? Is Bobby Grier running the show again??
