Belichick on QBs

Patriots coach Bill Belichick was asked by the Globe's Mike Reiss during today's conference call whether the possibility of carrying two quarterbacks on the final 53-man roster existed, or if the team planned to explore a third option.

The Patriots today cut backup Andrew Walter, leaving only Tom Brady and undrafted rookie Brian Hoyer on the current roster.

Check out the coach's response in the audio player.

  1. Classic, from The Hood. Basically, we might have 2 QBs....or we might not. Guess that about covers it then. :-)

  1. I can't imagine that the Patriot's sole backup at quarterback

would be a rookie undrafted free agent. It doesn't make any sense.

If this was Matt Cassel with four training camps under his belt, it

    might be a different story.

  1. Type your comment here...I would guess that he has a couple alternative trades in mind, but the asking prices are still too high. If the other team is faced with lowering their price or having to cut a player in the next few hours they don't want to . . . well, BB's probably got some leverage here, let's say.

  1. Just because O'Connel & Walter were released by the Patriots at this time doesn't mean that they don't have value or that they can't play. Both are perfectly fine. Both are big, tall, strong-armed guys who'd be welcome additions to many teams. Releasing two valuable players, both at the same highly valued position, at the same time, well in advance of the deadline, helps to force the hand of other teams. It de-values the guys the Bucs are actively shopping right now. But it also puts pressure on Denver & Kansas City to "act now" if they don't really want those guys. Who else needs an inexpensive QB? The Jets, Cleveland, etc.. This, in turn, releases other QB's into the system: Pizzotti, Anderson, Bartell, Ratliff; coincidentally, teams that could use a TE, with a collective plethora of LB's. The Patriots are shaking the tree; and why not?

If the Patriots could have another OLB/DE &/or even an MLB of a type equal in value to to their defensive system as Walter or O'Connel is to their offensive system, it would immediately make them a better team, a harder team to beat. If they need a veteran QB, either sooner or later, Huard will probably still be there, available one way or another, as more players shift to PUP & IR. Either way, a 2nd or 3rd QB, unless they're an exceptional developmental prospect, should not be a priority over signing a player that would likely make it onto the field for nearly a third of all snaps. And the prospect of such a player becoming available becomes more real with the release of those QB's.

  1. Whats wrong with 2 quarterbacks? If they have to go 3 deep for more than 2 games, then the PATs are screwed anyway and its an 8-8 season at best. So whats the point of keeping 3. We want SuperBowls and Playoffs anything else is failure. So keep 2 and leave a roster spot open for someone else.

  1. 3rd string (emergency) QB...Edleman.

  1. I'm not going to blame Mike Reiss if he wants to wait until 9/9 to predict the Patriots 53 man roster.

  1. Be serious. BB is not going to show his hand but no way they go into the season with just Hoyer as a backup. It's not just the season ending injury to Brady but the smaller injuries that keep him out a few series or a game or two. There are at least 10 passable backups that can be had for free and BB will take one of them unless a better one shows up or he can make a trade for a player he was going to cut anyway. Why even discuss the possibility of just Brady and Hoyer when it ain't gonna happen other than to wait for Week 3 if there is a deal for Feeley in place.

  1. I agree, troy brown was the 3rd qb for a while, in the event of a disaster, use edleman. Save the roster spot for running backs and db's.

  1. I see Victor Hobson is available....probably too short for BB.

Nunn deserves to make the team. Anyone know the latest on Slater?

  1. He used Hoyer the entire game.

Obviously, he is happy with him.

As I recall, this guy has won three Super Bowls.

  1. make sure heather mitts is included in any potential trades for AJ Feeley

  1. VerDisqo --

Excellent, insightful analysis of how the market works and of what's in it for the Pats. I'm somewhat doubtful that an LB or a DE that will upgrade the Pats roster will become available, but that is how it needs to be played.

  1. cant count on edleman, he played one game and has been hurt all preseason. overrated big time, he is getting cut.

  1. Why does any reporter even bother asking him a question. You will never get any kind of real answer.

Posted by nhguy September 4, 09 08:19 PM
  1. No doubt, Scott! These cuts are going to be IMPOSSIBLE to predict 100%!

  1. In a move that further surprises armchair quarterbacking fans, BB unveiled a revolutionary offensive scheme with no QB for the coming season.

  1. Why so much stress about Brady's backup? If Brady goes down, the Pats are done. The second string QB does not matter if the goal is winning a Supor Bowl.

  1. I think there is a good chance that the Patriots really will carry only two quarterbacks. If the Patriots can get a good deal elsewhere for a third QB, they may, but I think they would like to have another solid linebacker and perhaps a multi-way deal between linebackers, quarterbacks, and even tight ends is still possible. I think the tight end business, where so many people are suggesting that either Smith or Watson are GONE is not a certainty, but it could be one scenario, but only with really good return value and either similar salaries in the exchange or free up more cap space for a signing of someone else, especially extending Vince Wilfork.

  1. Can anyone remember AJ Feely? He is about to be cut by the eagles.Feely has played well against us. I'd love to see Ben Watson traded for Feely. If we get any round pick in trade for Watson, and we get another Patriots killer (ala Wes Welker) then the Pats get a proven backup in Feely and rid of Watson's contract.

Posted by Laurit September 5, 09 04:07 AM
  1. I reckon having 2 QBs is the way to go. Trading Ben Watson for AJ Feely will not be a good decision, given that Watson is a starter type TE, Feely is just another backup who might not see a snap if Brady (fingers crossed) stays healthy the rest of the season and on to SuperBowl. Trading Alex Smith would definitely be better to recoup our 5th round draft-pick loss.

And there's UB (UtilityBack) Edelman if both QB gets injured. So stop fretting Jim Keddy!! We should save Green-Ellis at all cost!!

  1. I thought that Ninkovich played very well against the Giants first string running game. Lenon looks like he might be learning the system but isn't making any plays ans misses tackles

    Posted by Eric J September 5, 09 08:47 AM
  1. If we trade any of our TE's for Feely, it will be Smith. His contract is richer than Watson's, plus, Watson knows the system and is more valuable to us at this particular point in time.
Given the talent at some of the other positions, I would rather see the Pats keep Nunn or possibly another skill position if it means only going with 2 QB's. Like someone else said on this blog, if we have to rely on a 3rd string QB, we are screwed. It's Brady or bust...might as well go all in.

  1. My Prediction: Green-Ellis starting Rb for pats by the end of the year.... He just makes things happen everytime he touches the ball. Notice he's always moving forward with the ball.

  1. I am ticked off they just cut Nunn ( short sighted to keep Galloway over him
( All he has done since training camp started is MAKE PLAYS )
The two bubble guys I've been keeping my fingers crossed for were BJGE & NUNN ...luckily the Law Firm came thru big time in last Pre-game
    ( but so did Nunn ! )
Hopefully , the rest of the NFL sleeps on him and we can re-sign him to practice squad.
    DANG !

    DANG !
