Pats '10 & '11 draft picks

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff September 6, 2009 01:10 PM

With all the Patriots' wheeling and dealing, here is a look at what I have for them in terms of draft choices over the next two years.

2010
1
2
2 (from Jacksonville)
2 (from Tennessee)
4
6
7
7 (from Denver)

2011
1
1 (from Oakland)
2
3
4
5
6
7
7 (from New Orleans)

NOTES: Not included here is the 2011 conditional draft choice traded to the Giants for TE Michael Matthews. ... The Patriots' 2010 third-round and fifth-round draft choices were traded to Oakland for DE Derrick Burgess.

  1. 4 picks in the first 2 rounds last year. 4 in the first 2 rounds next year. 3 in the first 2 rounds in 2011. THAT, my friends, is how you rebuild a franchise. What's even more impressive is they are still a favorite while they "rebuild". I know people have been down on the drafting lately, but look at the track record, I have no doubt that of the 11 eventual players over these three drafts you will see no less than 6 very good starters, and a few more serviceable ones. I'm kind of in awe that they are so capable of building up the draft reserves. Nicely done.

  1. Yeah, "re-building", that's a pretty incredible term, but it sure does look like it. Brady has the chance to be a top level QB for 5 years (if he stays uninjured, that is). Who knows, maybe the we draft a high value QB in 2011 and train him in under the best?

  1. Right now 2011 season is not happening BUT you guys are set up for the new core of players for future years....NEXT years draft is going to be the BEST since 2004 and seeing your 2010 draft picks its interesting to see what you Patriots get....this is not even counting compesated picks from losing free agents.
Question for you pats fans....What positions would you draft for your 1st and 2nd round picks...?????

  1. I agree, CTChiefdog.

Pats are shedding their dead skin before it starts to fester and choke them. 'Rebuilding' is never pretty, but no team can stop the onset of age--with every game, every team's roster gets one game older.

I'd rather have some painful shedding go on and still contend than build to a peak, followed by 5 years of pathetic recovery after that. Look what happened to the Raiders after they last made the SB. The Pats will be contenders for the next 5 years at least with these moves...

  1. can't keep up with everything Too much going on these past weeks) but didn't we get at least the 5th in 2010 back with trade.

  1. So NE sent the 2010 #7 they got from the Eagles (in the Greg Lewis trade) to Denver and Denver sent back their own 2010 #7 later?

  1. Actually what happened is the Patriots traded their fifth to TB for Alex Smith, and then traded their 3 and the 5 they got from Denver for Hochstein and LeKevin Smith to Oakland.

Moreover, I believe they also have Philadelphia's 7 as "change" for the Greg Lewis trade, and a bunch of comp 6s and 7s coming their way, too.

  1. I thought we got a fourth back in the Derrick Burgess trade after we acquired a fifth that was then sent to Oakland.

  1. just wanted to add that we signed Kendall Simmons today. he's a starting quality guard and should be a great backup for us. decent in pass protection, superb run blocker. btw, while i wanted seymour on the 2009 roster, it appears that belichick is making all the necessary moves to keep this franchise in superbowl contention for the coming decade. im not sure i like the trade yet, but i definitely like all the high draft picks we've got in the next few years.

  1. I knew this post would reliably be here early today. I don't know how we are going to get by without you.

  1. This is a gift to Oakland saying Thank you very much for Randy.

  1. @ SteelersFan -

You guys don't do too shabby, either, in terms of maintaining quality results while engaging in roster turnover.

Pats should have 3 COMP PICKS in 2010 - lost four eligible FAs (Evans, Jordan, Gaffney and Paxton) and acquired only one (McGowan). No idea, of course, what round(s) those will fall in, but probably 5th or later.

Seems kinda silly to speculate this far in advance, and, as always, the position picked is influenced by "BPA" considerations. But, in terms of "need" priority, I'd guess LB, DE, RB. Maybe TE, since that position seems always to be in a state of flux (putting it mildly). Pitta from BYU has looked good as a receiving TE. Eh - who knows?

  1. I like how the Pat's are able to stockpile their draft picks, year after year. totally agree with the above posts. age and injuries take their toll and great players need to be replaced most of the time sooner rather than later. I would take 11-5 and retool on the fly like last year, rather then 4-12 for five years trying to rebuild.

  1. Heh! I'm getting a BIG chuckle at all this "rebuilding" talk!

The Patriots WILL rebuild...SOME day...When Coach Bill gets sick and tired of amassing World Championships.

I'm guessing: in the 6-10 range.

    CROWNS, boys, not YEARS.

I know that seem LOOOOOdicruously outrageous...But I have always said, and I maintain: most folks don't grasp how SEISMIC the process is, that we are witnessing in REAL TIME, and right in front of our very EYES.

Even though circumstances have interfered with our adding to our Legend, ere the last 4 years, this team has not only failed to stagnate, it has GREATLY increased its Depth of Talent, 1 through 53...and stands ~ thanks to 9 years of Vision and Testicular Fortitude ~ to INCREASE its IMMENSE advantage...in EACH of the next 3 years, as the TIDAL WAVES of talent we keep bringing in ~ albeit with many casualties! ~ flood our team!!

I'll say it again: Our Best Years...are YET TO COME.

    "REBUILDING"???

Boys...We have a VERY REAL shot at Three in a Row...and I mean RIGHT NOW.

    AND 19-0.

AND more Championships, after THAT, if Coach Bill doesn't grow bored at that point!!!

Call me Crazy, by all means.

But tell me why I'm WRONG.

Or at least remember where you heard it first, second, and 1000th!!!

  1. "what happen if there is no season in 2011"

I, for one, crawl into a hole and weep.

  1. They better have a lot of picks. They miss on many more than they hit.
    Moroney
    Chad Jackson
    Shawn Crable
    O'Donnell
    Ellis Hobbs
    David Thomas
    Bethel Johnson

Then they trade away high draft picks for players they cut!
    Alex Smith

Then they trade away productive players for no picks at all!
    Vrabel
