Silence on Seymour

Posted by Michael Vega, Globe Staff September 8, 2009 03:45 PM

The Patriots just concluded a triple-header conference call this afternoon with director of player personnel Nick Caserio, defensive coordinator Dean Pees, and head coach Bill Belichick. There seemed to be an organization-wide omerta when the subject of Richard Seymour's trade Sunday to the Oakland Raiders was broached.

Mum was the word.

"I'm sure there are probably questions about Richard," Belichick said. "Along with our statement there, on Sunday, at this point because we don't have rights to Richard there isn't a lot I can say about Richard or his situation."

Belichick declined to confirm whether Seymour's trade was a done deal. "It's not a topic I want to address," he said. Asked if the Patriots defense was any better without Seymour, Belichick said, "We'll have to wait and see about that."

Said Caserio: "That is a subject I'm not going to get into. I don't have any comment about that. I think we're really focused on Buffalo and we're still putting together a roster and putting together the practice squad. There's a lot of balls we're juggling right now, so that's not a subject I'm going to get into today."

Asked whether Seymour's trade would change the way the team approached Vince Wilfork about a possible contract extension, Caserio said, "Like I said, I don't really have any comment. What we do as an organization, we'll discuss it, but as far as it relates to anyone in particular, I don't have any comment about that today."

Asked about his reaction to Seymour's departure, Pees said, "My reaction is I'm just getting ready for Buffalo. Whoever we have here when we have our meeting in the morning, that's who I'm getting ready to prepare for Buffalo. I have my hands full enough with them."

Pressed about the schematic changes the Patriots defense would encounter without Seymour, Pees replied, "Again, I'm not trying to be evasive, because you guys know I don't mind talking to you at all, but this interview is not going to be about Richard. It's simply about our defense and me getting our defense ready for Buffalo. Whoever we have here is a matter of who we get ready for our different fronts and our different coverages . . . It's not something I'm going to talk about."

  1. Did the players practice today, and if so, can we get an attendance?

  1. What was the point of this teleconference?

  1. Just curious as to who the idiot reporter wouldn't let it go. Anyone who's followed the Patriots for more than a year knows how they operate and that line of questioning, besides being stupid, never results in a single nugget of information.

  1. As much as I enjoy the news that there was a conference call, it would be great to know what questions they DID answer and what the answer was, as opposed to the questions everyone knows they WOULDN'T answer and the standard response we'd expect when those questions are asked.

  1. great, so its obviously not a done deal.. not lookin too good right now.. at this point, i hope its a done deal - for a fear the seymour/patriots relationship is officially severed.

  1. Omerta, Michael Vega, are you serious? There's a lot you need to learn son on how this organization has been run the last 10 years.

  1. if the deal doesn't get done, i say oh well. we miss out on a nice pick, but we get to keep a premier player. even if our relationship with sey is irreperably damaged the guy will play for us because he wants the money next year. either way he is going to be on the field this year. otherwise he will be in the same situation in 2010 that he's in right now.

  1. Omerta, Michael Vega, are you serious? There's a lot you need to learn on how to post to a sports blog.

From Wikipedia: "Omertà is a popular attitude and code of honor, common in areas of southern Italy, such as Sicily."

MA, ME, NH, VT, CT, RI, and Sicily?

  1. #9 Nothanks, you left out the fact that omerta also commonly describes a code of silence central to the Mafia.

Somehow, I can't picture Seymour coming back. He seems like the type who would be too pissed off to ever play for the Pats now. He's sort of between a rock and a hard place, but I don't think he's foolish enough to start pissing away paychecks.

  1. Why is Dean Pees still Defensive Coordinator given that our defense has been less than stellar since Romeo left?

  1. Once again BB jerks around the paying fans and the media with a phony press conference, for no good reason. Why doesn't Kraft tell him that dealing with the press and the fans and providing them with reasonable information is part of the job. Do you think Francona enjoys the media EVERYDAY at Fenway? And last time I checked he's won 2 championships and handled it all with class. Of course, now all the toadies will whine that BB can do no wrong, and no one should ever criticize....ridiculous.

  1. When will Patriots' players learn? If you play hardball with the team, bad things happen to you! How many times has this happened, David Patten and Lawyer Milloy? The Pats could have done nothing worse to Seymour than to send him to Oakland. How many players has he talked to on the Pats that used to play for Oakland? He knows how bad that organization is and now he plays for them!

All he had to do was take the Pats offer, which I'm sure was reasonable in this salary cap era, and all would be fine. But no, he had to play hardball and the Pats showed him who has the upper hand right now. No one has been able to hold the team hostage, you either want to play for a winner or you can play somewhere else. Besides, how many ex-Pats have done anything on another team? Viniteri and Law? Those are individual skill positions, nothing to do with a team. Let's see how many sacks Seymour gets playing by himself in Oakland. No other player on that line deserves mention.

Good bye and good riddance, you fool!

  1. Why do we still have Dean Pees? WTF? This guy makes me gag. How can we make 3rd down stops when its 3rd and 10 and we allow 15 yard cushions in the nickle? *Headscratch* Granted Hobbs couldn't cover but with absolutely NO pass rush this scheme doesn't work. Did he learn that? NOOOOOO! Coordinators need to coordinate to their players strengths and put them in a position to win.

    My fingers are crossed!

  1. Oh and to $200's comments, this is FOOTBALL! BB's job is to WIN and put his players in a position to WIN, not to make friends. Leave that up to Tony Dungy.
