Patriots confirm captains

Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff September 10, 2009 12:45 PM

The Patriots have confirmed that they have named their captains for the 2009 season.

Offense: quarterback Tom Brady and wide receiver Randy Moss.
Defense: linebacker Jerod Mayo and nose tackle Vince Wilfork
Special teams: Sam Aiken.

Brady, Mayo and Aiken were all preseason captains. Moss is a captain for the second straight season.

It is interesting that Wilfork, who boycotted the team's voluntary organized team activities in the spring as he tried to angle for a long-term extension but has participated in all mandatory activities despite not having a new deal, was named a captain for the second straight year.

Aiken replaced Larry Izzo, who is now with the Jets, as special teams captain. Izzo was special teams captain for the past eight seasons.

The Patriots captains last year were Brady, Moss, left tackle Matt Light, Wilfork, safety Rodney Harrison, and linebackers Tedy Bruschi, Mike Vrabel and Izzo.

  1. Chris, are the team captains elected by the players or named by the coaching staff?

  1. Kevin Faulk should be a captain over Randy Moss. One is a great example of work ethic and toughness, the other gives effort when he feels like it. He basically walked through training camp and preseason at half-speed.

  1. Any reason why they went from 8 down to 5 captains? Maybe not quite as much "captain material" on the team with the departures of Bruschi, Vrabel, Harrison, and Seymour?

  1. Are captains voted on by the players or the coaches or is it a mix?

  1. Congrats Mayo, high praise for a second year player from a team of this caliber.

  1. Has a second year player ever been a captain for the Patriots before?

  1. Considering his previous reputation, I wonder how many people in Minnesota, Oakland, or even New England - when the Moss trade was announced - thought we would see the day when Moss was one of the Patriots' captains? I have to give the man his due. He has been as far from a disruptive force as a player can be; so much so that he earned the respect of his teammates and coaches to the point of being considered one of the 'good guys'.
    Kudos, Randy.

  1. I am worried about the secondary. We are going to get smoked in the passing game once again this season.

  1. Couldn't agree more w. CB. Moss only catches the ball if it's thrown in his digits. Never see the guy sacrifice his body for the ball.

  1. im seriously worried about our defense...there have been some many debatable moves in the off season that simply math dictates that at least some will come back to haunt us...we are basically saying that we have no D back or O lineman worth of being a Captain? Scary.

And yes, Faulk deserves to be a Captain.

  1. It's time to try to work out a contract with Wilfork that's fair to both sides.
It's not his fault that he's as tough in negotiations as he is on defense!

  1. Maybe switching to a 4-3, putting more pressure on opposing quarterbacks, forcing mistakes, takes some pressure off of the secondary? Last year it seemed we gave them all the time they needed to complete passes.

  1. Let's see what happens. I'm worried about the D as well, but we need to look for signs that this group can gel as the season progresses. In the meantime, we need our offense to win the earlier games for us.

  1. I have random thoughts that I like to share, especially when I steal them from random people.

  1. I'd like to see more 4-3 too - good D starts with the line.

  1. Remember everyone. There is no skeeming in the Pre-Season. The only thing I am worried about is all the sloppy missed tackels. That (I hope ) can be fixed. That and a little worried about the run blocking. I think it's been a weakness for some time now. How many times have we seen a defender get to Maroney as he gets the handoff? Not much you can do about that.
