Simmons set to join fold

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff September 6, 2009 02:07 PM

Free-agent guard Kendall Simmons is set to sign a contract to join the Patriots, according to a league source.

ESPN's Adam Schefter and FoxSports.com's Alex Marvez had reported the news earlier today.

Simmons worked out for the Patriots on Sept. 2, and apparently, the Patriots liked what they saw. The 30-year-old Simmons, a first-round draft choice in 2002, has played his entire career with the Steelers and is coming off an Achilles injury that limited him to four games last season.

The Patriots are already deep at guard, with returning starters Logan Mankins and Stephen Neal, as well as reserves Rich Ohrnberger, Dan Connolly and Ryan Wendell.

Mankins and Neal have contracts that expire after the 2009 season.

  1. Simmons has been a quality starter, especially run-blocking, IIRC. At the very least, it seems like Connolly's days might be numbered (like, post-PUP returns of LeVoir and Tate). Could a trade of Stephen Neal be yet in the offing, though? He's another 2010 FA that BB might be looking to shed (as were both Thomas and Seymour).

  1. Hmmm. Let Green step up and take Seymours starting spot
(it's about freaking time!!) and fill the roster opening with Simmons? Or let go one of the other fatboys o-liners and let Terrence Nunn back on the team? Something else? What do you think? Talk to me, genius's.

  1. Once again, this is like trying to understand the mind of a genius. You just don't see what they see but the end result is always the amazing.

  1. The steelers didn't resign an offensive lineman. They're known for letting go of people at the right time and their o-line is woeful. Hopefully, the Steelers diudn't use him the right way and Dante can take advantage of his talents...hopefully.

  1. Simmons sucks. He has diabetes. And look he got cut from the Steelers, and they have probably the worst OL in the league. Ask any Steelers fan how good Simmons was when he was there.
This player is Billy Yates 2.0

  1. no simmons just sucks. He showed a little promise as a rookie and then was diagnosed with diabetes and has never been the same. he lost a bunch of weight and strength trying to over come it and just when he seemed ready to make the starting lineup again he tore his achillis and was lost for another year. He has never lived up to his status as a 1st round pick and was finally cut from the steelers last year.

Think about that. we cut him with our oline situation.

  1. @ #5 - Joe. I can understand why the Steelers let him go as he ruptured his Achilles. If you've ever had an achilles injury, they take time to heal. Given his draft/salary status, the Steelers couldn't afford to wait for his recovery. This is just another example of BB's shrewdness.

BTW, the Patriots aren't done wheeling and dealing. Should be a fun couple of days!

  1. strength = running game
    weakness = passing game
He didnt fit well in our new system with Bruce Arians as our coordinator

  1. I don't think it's that the steelers have a terrible o-line...it's just that they have a sub-par QB who couldn't avoid a train if there was a fence around the tracks and they had a banged up running game recently. This guy is just a backup and an insurance policy until LeVoir comes back.

  1. #7.steelersfan. Simmons was good in the run game but struggled in passing game. Change ur screen name, I was here first!!!!!!! LOL
What do you mean he never lived up to 1st round pick. He was good under Cowher and started 7 years. He wasn't as good as Fanaca, well nobody is, but held his own for years...

  1. PatsFans, anyone who watched SB XLII saw the Giants DL overpower the Patriots OL. It wasn't pretty. Nothing has changed except the Patriots OL is 2 yrs older and this could easily happen again in the playoffs. Lets hope Vollmer turns into a stud tackle, Ohrnberger pans out and Simmons can step in at right guard when/if Neal falters again. Mankins at LG and Koppen at C should be OK. Its all about protecting Brady now that he has been injured once. If this OL can't be shored up to protect him, and he keeps getting hit, we can likely kiss our dreams of another SB goodbye.

  1. I just think it's funny how Steelers fans are always writing here, and I mean always, all the time. At least they're usually honest.

  1. Does anyone remember signing a steelers gu before, hhmm a linebacker maybe? Look what we found in Mike Vrabel. Give Simmons a shot and maybe he is the one gone when LeVoir returns.....

Cirrus - Jets, Colts and Bolts fans write here too......

  1. For all the Steeler fans, the reason why he wasn't re-signed is because he had an injury. He (for a guy who sucked according to Steeler fan)started 81 games for your team so he must have been ok.BB doesn't sign stiffs for his O-line he lets them go if they don't pan out after a determined length of time.Watch out he will open holes and the Patriots need to open holes for Maroney because he can't create his own...
