Wilfork: Losing Seymour like losing family

Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff September 6, 2009 01:49 PM

FOXBOROUGH -- A sleepy Sunday morning was turned upside down for members of the Patriots defense when they learned that defensive end Richard Seymour had been traded to the Oakland Raiders for a 2011 first-round pick.

Get Adobe Flash player
Seymour woke up linemates and friends nose tackle Vince Wilfork and defensive end Ty Warren to let them know he had been traded.

"Big Sey", as his teammates affectionately called him, was saying see ya.

A melancholy Wilfork said losing Seymour was like losing family, both on and off the field and that he will be missed. Wilfork lamented the breakup of one of the best defensive lines in the NFL, but said he and the team have no choice but to move on.

"We're all professionals. Change happens all the time. Every year you have change, you have roster change, you have everything changing," said Wilfork. "This is another change and we're going to have to deal with it. I don't care how you feel about it. You got to deal with it and move on. We're getting ready for the most important game of our season, Monday night against a divisional rival, so we have to put everything aside and work."

Warren said that Seymour had confided in him that he thought the writing was on the wall regarding his Patriots career and that something like a trade could happen before the season.

"Sey felt like something was going to happen along these lines," said Warren. "He mentioned that to me months prior to this happening. I didn't put much thought into it."

Warren, who said he was in a hotel room at the Renaissance Boston Hotel & Spa at Patriot Place when he got the news, said that he thought Seymour was joking with him at first.

"I just told him, 'Stop lying. It's Sunday. Man, you serious? It's Sunday. Don't be coming at me like that.' I took a nap and woke up and there were 10 more text messages. I was like alright let me look into this deal and then it was true," said Warren.

"He will definitely be missed. I got his phone number. It won't be hard to talk to him, but as far as a teammate he'll definitely be missed, but again it's the nature of the business. He knew that. It came to fruition and that's what it is."

On the surface it's hard to see how the trade makes the Patriots a better team in the short-term, losing a five-time Pro Bowl defensive end. Warren was asked if you have to trust the organization.

"Absolutely, only they know where we are and where we're going, so you got to trust them to know what they're going to do," said Warren.

Warren said he's not going to change his game to try to compensate for Seymour's loss opposite him at defensive end.

"I blaze my own trails. What one person does doesn't determine what I do. What I do is pretty much in stone," said Warren "They know what they're going to get out of me. I'm not really a rah-rah guy. I don't feel like I'm going to need any extra rah-rah. I'm just going to do what Ty Warren does and that is stick to the plan, work hard. That's kind of my motto."

Warren said there are veteran players who can pick up the leadership slack for Seymour. But young players will be asked to do that too, including second-year linebacker and preseason defensive captain Jerod Mayo.

Mayo admitted the business side of the NFL, as compared to college, has been eye-opening

"I've only been here two years and I'm surprised every day, especially today and yesterday," said Mayo.

Mayo said he is not going to change his leadership approach because of Seymour's absence.

"Not really. I'm just going to come to work every day and keep chipping at the rock, trying to get better and learn my teammates," said Mayo. "They're changing every day, and hopefully we can get some consistency here soon and compete [next] Monday night."

Wilfork, who seemed the most upset by the trade, said the shipping out of Seymour to Oakland is a stark reminder that the business side of the game is never going away.

"It is what it is. Don't get it twisted, it is a business and you have to move on," said Wilfork. "We will. As a defensive lineman, as a friend of his, as an organization and a team, we have to move on from it and we will. This is shocking, but at the same time that's the business side to it. That's nothing but business and you just move on from it. Forget how you feel about it. You have to deal with it."

  1. That's what happens Vince when you want to get paid. They couldn't keep both of you so pick up the slack.

  1. I wonder if this opens the door for the pats to sign vonnie holiday or kevin carter

  1. Thanks for all the seasons Seymour. However considering we have Wilfork and Mankins to resign someone had to be traded. Hopefully the extra cap space will be used to resign Wilfork.

  1. After today, teams have to be calling BB trying to pry Vince away.

  1. We feel ya guys! Though it was probably a great move, it still stings. Hopefully, we haven't lost too much this year and it will work out. Good luck Big Sey, you will be missed.!

  1. The pie is only that big, and when you want a big slice for yourself, someone else has to take a smaller piece or not get any at all. There are not too many Brady or Tedy who would accept a less than market contract so the team can afford to pay other players more and have a better team overall at the end of the day. So spare me, Vince.

  1. Hope that they get Vince re-signed before the season begins. We need Vince to assume a leadership role, and he has to feel that he has a long-term stake in the Patriots team. Next: Mankins-- the anchor of the O-Line.

  1. Thank you Big Sey. A number 6 pick who played everybit of it for the org. Good luck in the hole.

  1. God speed Richard. You were only the heart and soul of the Pats for the past decade or so. You will be missed. Thank You for everything.

  1. I agree with Ed O. Careful what you wish for ... even though that might be an unfair statement. I'm kinda sick about this and hope it doesn't bite them in the ass towards the end of the season or anytime in the season, but I guess early is better than late. (e.g. Lawyer Milloy). The positive(s) Jarvis Green in my opinion is too valuable and too quick off the line not to be playing at least 3 downs on a 4 down set. Pryor also was instinctive, even as a rookie. I was impressed with the young D-Linemen that they had in camp. My guess is that they will hang on to a couple for the practice/development squad.

  1. Seymour was a huge piece of those 3 Championship teams, and he played at high level right out of college. He's still not yet 30 years old, so it's pretty amazing what he's already accomplished.

He'll be tough to replace, on the field and in the locker room. Would have liked to see him finish his career with the Pats, but just like when the end of the line came for Troy Brown, Vrabel, Teddy B, Rodney, Ty Law and others, it's time to say: 'Thank you and good luck' .

  1. #1 Ed O, LOL! Good one

There's a little dose of reality that should help Mr. Wil-you-fork-over-the-dough dry his tears. He knows it though...."just have to move on", "it's the nature of the business". Yeah, the business of moving on to setting HIM up financially for life! Don't worry Vince....you can purchase plenty of new "friends" with that huge front money you'll get soon enough.

  1. Bruschi, harrison, Seymour, Vrabel. it is clearly the end of an era for the patriots defense.

Nothing more to say except I will remember these players for the rest of my life as being the heart and soul of the defense for a team i grew up loving.

These guys left it all on the field.

  1. Anyone who is mad at Wilfork for wanting to get paid instead of take a hometown discount needs to join us here in reality. You wouldn't take less money to stay at your current job if you could get paid twice as much at another job with the exact same responsibilities. If you say you would, you're a liar.

  1. Ok Mike,
I've waited as long as I could, but after THIS trade, I deffinately need to have the following info: What draft picks do the Pats have so far next year... and the year after as well...

I know that all the info won't be set in stone for months but please, list out what's known for now and keep the info as accurate as possible.

Omg, sorry I even HAVE to ask.

  1. mynameisbob has it exactly right. there's a salary cap. not everybody can make huge dollars and still have a top TEAM. with this trade, and Tedy's retirement, there are a few extra dollars. contracts for Wilfork, Mankins, Brady need to be addressed. or maybe there are more moves coming. but what it also comes down to, if Big Sey isn't the player he was 5 years ago, and they don't think they could sign him again, getting a probable top 5 pick isn't a bad return. and there's nothing to keep them from signing him a year from now. frankly, any deal that you can do with Al Davis is probably a really good deal.

Posted by Pat Henry September 6, 09 03:26 PM
  1. Kevin is also right, those players did leave it all on the field. And so did the Celtics of Bird, Parrish, McHale and they all got old together. The Pats have always been about being Super Bowl contenders year after year after year. Which involves hard choices and dealing with reality. They obviously feel they can deal with replacing Seymour, they might not have him in a year, and having a high draft pick is a nice payoff. Better to make the decision a year too soon rather than a year too late.

Posted by Pat Henry September 6, 09 03:29 PM
  1. Wow- no Vrabel, Bruschi, Hobbs, Seymour, and Harrison. And when you take away Samuel from previous years, it's clear that BB wanted to get younger and have cap space. All the great teams had to go through this, like the Steel Curtain and the 49ers, but it's still hard to watch. I credit the defense so much more than Brady for the SB.

I would find it hard to think they'll get back to the Superbowl this year.

Posted by JoeNalf September 6, 09 03:49 PM
  1. No one is mad at Wilfork. But when he is shedding tears, he should take a side glance at the mirror and check out his tough skins, very elongated jaws and rows of sharp teeth. It is not totally convincing when the job loss of another member of your team is partly because the team will not be able to afford to keep both of you after you demanded a very very big raise. It is fine to just say: It is a business, I can understand.

Posted by mynameisbob September 6, 09 03:52 PM
  1. Since Wilfork wanted more money the Pats had to ship Seymour out of town. So they intend to extend Wilfork who is only two years younger? They better not cave and give him top dollar. They should have traded Ty Warren instead. Hopefully the Pats don't play Oakland in the next few years because Seymour will be all over Brady.

Posted by RogTown September 6, 09 04:14 PM
  1. There's no reason to think the Patriots will be unable to get to the Super Bowl by reason of this trade or anything else that's happened.

Vrabel's gone; they've added Derrick Burgess.
Bruschi's gone; Gary Guyton will probably play more, but the Pats are in 3-3-5 defenses so often because of the prevalence of single-back sets that it won't make a difference very often.
Hobbs is gone, but Bodden is better.
Seymour's gone, but they won championships with Jarvis Green playing most of the time before.
Harrison's gone, but they've added Chung and Meriweather looks great.

  1. It sure didn't sound to me like VW was shedding any tears about this trade. Yeah he was lamenting about the departure of a solid Teammate & close friend, as a friend and teammate would be expected to do. He realizes this is a business & his most important comments were that the team has to move on & put everything aside & prepare for the most important game of the season. What more would you want to hear from someone who played alongside a 5 time pro bowl player who has been suddenly traded?
Hopefully, the Pats have made this move with the intent of sweetening the pot a bit for VW. Now we'll see if that's true & if VW is being reasonable about his contract negotiations or is trying to be another "Mo Vaughn", where it's all about the money.

  1. Today is a very sad day for me.....I rmoved two of my favorite team pics of the Pats from the wall in our tv room.....I really felt like crying when Tedy Brushi announced his retirement. Now with Richard Seymour traded, Rodney and Tedy gone too; it seems like a whole different team....Counting all the others gone since the end of last season.....coaches, etc I am close to panic state. I sure hope Belicheck is concerned about the season at hand and not just the future. I cannot feel confident that this new young group can handle the day to day changes put upon them.....Go Pats and good luck to Richard....

  1. This move is genius on Bills part... Oakland is going to give them a top 5 first round draft choice.. in which bill is going to trade down a few times.. lets say a low first rounder and a second rounder for the first trade, then a second rounder and a third rounder for his late round first round pick.
I am guessing we will have 2 extra second rounders and 2 extra third round picks as a result.. for a bargin basement price... if we dont need them we will package them up for the following years draft for another first round pick.. All for a guy that we couldnt afford to keep in a year...

  1. Sports is all about money. The only team that matters is the one that pays the most money so those haters who hated on Wilfork because he is anticipating a huge pay day from the Patriots better get ready to see him walk because the money will be greener on the other side.

Posted by Warren Evans September 6, 09 07:30 PM
  1. Wilfork, like Seymour, is vastly overrated and has a much higher opinion of his value than does Belichick I'm sure. While an in-season NFL trade never happens, I wouldn't be surprised to see Wilfork go at the end of this season.

Posted by Otis September 6, 09 07:43 PM
  1. I love how people are getting on Wilfork for wanting to be paid, it's ridiculous. If he breaks his neck in practice tomorrow, the patriots will cut him by the end of the week and he'll have a broken neck, no career, and no money. So for all the people that think he's some kind of a jerk for wanting to get paid, give me a break. Football, far more than any other sport, is where you have to get every dollar you can get while you can still get it, your one bad hit away from being broke and disabled. This isnt baseball, there arent any Carl Pavano's. The teams show no loyalty to the players, so why should a player like Wilfork take less to stay here?

  1. "Better to make the decision a year too soon rather than a year too late."

A generally good sentiment...however there's Rodney Harrison and Junior Seau with the Chargers, and to some extent Randy Moss with the Raiders (special case).

  1. Jason, I'm almost positive that it is forbidden for teams to contact Vince about any thing regarding a contract while he is under contract with the pats. That falls under tampering and the pats would be very quick to react to that.

Warren, everything is about money, not sports. Not one of these people on here can say that they wouldn't want the maximum amount of money they could possibly get out of their job.

  1. I don't think the loss of Seymour will be felt as much as some of us fear. I actually really like this move, although that doesn't diminish the shock I still feel. Seymour has been in and out with injuries for the past few years and when Jarvis Green replaces him for an extended period of time there really do not appear to be many noticeable difference in the line play. Great value trade, hope it works out. The Raiders are probably a lock for a top-10 pick in 2011 with the Cryptkeeper at the helm. Jarvis Green - welcome to the starting rotation!

  1. OK, does anybody see we now have another 1st rounder, more cash and a hole at the end of our defensive. To me it adds up to an opportunity to get Peppers!! If not oh well, but that is an option. By the way, THANKS SEYMOUR you were GREAT!

  1. Losing Seymour losing family.

    Losing Seymour gaining money.

Vinny love you, but tell it like it is, or keep mouth not open.

  1. This is a brilliant move! Seymour is more valuable in the 3-4 scheme and Pats will be running a 4-3 most of the time this year. No one is going to like this but I know Seymour is a great player but I also believe at times he was LAZY, I watch the games very closely and he takes play off. Maybe that is a result of injuries or being on the field so much bu tI honestly believe The PATS have the horses to more than fill the hole he is leaving. Jarvis Green is underrated and we have some good looking young guys. I think by game 5 this Defense will be better than the one we played with the last 2 years.

  1. Sey was great, I'll always be a fan. Best to get something in return instead of him walking when his contract's up.

That's hilarious that Warren says he has his number - so do I, it's 401-464-1194. We've all had it for years, but he never answers. : )

Posted by DuhChief September 6, 09 09:54 PM
  1. This defense is going to suck with or without Seymour. Might as well get a draft pick.Hope the offense can score alot with the tough schedule the Patriots have this year.

Posted by pam September 6, 09 10:30 PM
  1. This is an amazing trade. Its sad to see Seymour go, but to get a 1st roud pick in 2011 is incredible for a 29 yr old DL with 1 year on his contract. In 2011 the rookie cap should be in place so top picks will be that much more valuable.... and from the Raiders it will be high. And this is without Piolli.

Posted by Beldar September 6, 09 11:13 PM
  1. #29 Pat ( or is it Ty Law?)

"If he breaks his neck in practice tomorrow, the patriots will cut him by the end of the week and he'll have a broken neck, no career, and no money. So for all the people that think he's some kind of a jerk for wanting to get paid, give me a break. Football, far more than any other sport, is where you have to get every dollar you can get while you can still get it, your one bad hit away from being broke and disabled."

Very dramatic!. So did Tyrone McKenzie ends up broke after hurting his knee in the first week of training camp?

The players make a decent salary. They often make, in a very short time, what most folks make over their entire working lives, playing a game.

There are insurance policies, taken out by players and the teams, against injuries, particularly the career ending type of injuries. There are also the player's union and pensions and disability payments from the unions
    .
No one is hating Wilfork for wanting to get paid.. But don.t cry crocodile tears ( losing family, indeed ) when his demands, directly or indirectly impact on the careers and compensations of other members of the team !

Posted by Pathastofeedthefamily September 6, 09 11:31 PM
  1. If Ron Brace does well this year - we can all say goodbye to Wilfork as well.
