Colin Brennan paces Massachusetts Amateur stroke-play field

Once again, Colin Brennan has positioned himself nicely for a run at his first Massachusetts Amateur title, securing medalist or co-medalist honors for the third consecutive year.

“It seems to all come down to putting,” Brennan said, after shooting an even-par 70 at Longmeadow Country Club Tuesday to share the low 36-hole stroke-play total at the 105th Massachusetts Amateur with 2003 champion Andy Drohen (69) at 1-under 139.

Brennan, despite being the No. 1 match-play seed each of the past two years, lost both times in the quarterfinals. He’ll be the top seed this time, too, and will face Ian Thimble in Wednesday morning’s first round. Thimble earned the 32d and final match-play spot in a seven-man playoff for five spots.
