Nick Faldo returns with a 79, and advice for Rory McIlroy

GULLANE, Scotland — The highlight of Nick Faldo’s return visit to Muirfield came early, very early.

This, as you might surmise, was not a good sign.

Faldo’s one highlight came on the first tee before he had hit so much as a shot on this hard-bouncing, quick-rolling bowling alley of a British Open course.

It came as he stood, a club back in his hand, and gazed out from under his visor at the spectators a few rows deep; at the golden rough swaying in the breeze; at the long view of the East Lothian countryside.

“It was great, I tell you,” Faldo said. “I hope somebody got a happy snap of that from behind the tee. Seriously, that was the best view of the day.”
