Champions Tour draws big names

The Champions Tour Bank of America Championship June 18 to 24 at Nashawtuc Country Club in Concord continues to draw the big names in the world of senior golf. Jay Haas, the tour's top 2007 money winner, and Tom Purtzer, No. 4 on the earnings list, are among the latest to commit. Tournament director Tracy West also got firm commitments last week from Tom Kite, Eduardo Romero, and Lanny Wadkins. They join a field that also includes Andy Bean, R.W. Eaks, Keith Fergus, and Bobby Wadkins, all among the top 10 in 2007 earnings. Defending champion Mark McNulty, as well as former champs Jim Dent (1996), Allen Doyle (2003), and Craig Stadler (2004), will also play in the tournament, the longest-running 54-hole test on the Champions Tour.

Odds 'n' ends

Nice start to the season for Salem (N.H.) pitcher Connor Nolan, who tossed a 5-hitter and struck out 11 in a complete game, a 3-2 win over Keene. . . . Ruddy Espinol helped Lawrence win its opener, 6-2, over Dracut, with a complete game 6-hitter. He struck out three and walked three. . . . P.J. Farnham had two hits and two RBIs to help Andover beat Chelmsford, 6-1. . . . Player of the Year candidate Stephanie Mayne banged out a pair of home runs to lift North Reading over Andover, 7-1, in a girls softball game.

In lacrosse, Anthony DeLeo and Pat Pothier each had two goals in North Reading's 9-3 rout of Pentucket. . . . Ten players scored goals in North Andover's 17-1 demolition of Ipswich. Three of the goals came off the stick of Ricky LaViska. . . . North Andover got three goals each from Aimee Dixon and Briana Connolly in a 10-7 girls lacrosse win over Billerica. . . . Kyleigh Keating had an 8-point game with four goals and four assists in Salem's 14-5 win over Manchester West.

St. John's Prep dumped Lawrence in volleyball, 25-23, 25-21, 19-25, and 25-13. The Lancers were victimized big-time by St. John's Sean O'Connor, who comes from Hampstead, N.H. O'Connor had a career-high 49 assists. . . . Andrew Foote, who rushed for 4,549 yards and scored 470 points during a brilliant four-year stint at North Andover, will play his college football at Division 3 Springfield.

Campus corner

University of Massachusetts at Lowell senior Nicole Plante of North Adams ran the fastest NCAA Division 2 10,000 meters in the recent Mount San Antonio College Relays in Walnut, Calif. Plante broke the tape in 34:07.03 to top the previous best of 35:38.90 by junior Erin Richard of Clarion University earlier this season. . . . Sophomore leftfielder Kevin Vona of Belmont tied a Bentley single -game record with six hits and drove in seven in the Falcons' recent 23-9 rout of Saint Anselm. Vona, who was 6-for-7 in the game, became the first Bentley player in 11 years to have six hits in a game and just the third in the program's history. Vona, after going hitless in the first inning, then ripped six straight hits, including four singles and two doubles. Also having a big game was Charlie Pagliarulo of Medford, who scored five runs and had three hits and three RBIs. . . . UMass-Amherst senior Mary Jenkins of Acton is the Atlantic-10 Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in swimming and diving. She's the first UMass-Amherst swimmer to earn the honor. . . . Volleyball player Kristina Martell of Chelmsford was one of 18 UMass-Lowell students honored at a recent student-athlete luncheon. Her 3.94 grade point average in the fall semester was the highest on her team.

Lowell Devils

Right wing David Clarkson was the Devils Man of the Year for his contribution to the community during the 2006-07 season. Clarkson was active in youth hockey, the YMCA, and at children's hospitals and pediatric wards. . . . The Devils finished the season with a 38-30-6-6 record, good for 88 points and a fifth-place finish in the Atlantic Division. Lowell missed the fourth and final playoff spot by three points. . . . Clarkson and Rod Pelley scored the last two goals of the season for the Devils, who lost to Worcester, 3-2, in overtime in the year's finale.
