Pros
Grzebien falls short
Following through with what she told the Globe two weeks ago,
Anna Grzebien played in the North American Pro Golf Tour event this week at Atlantic CC in Plymouth. She shot 79-79 and missed the cut. No, she isn't trying to follow in
Michelle Wie's footsteps and challenge the men. Grzebien recently completed her collegiate career at Duke, turned pro, and wants to keep her game in shape for this fall's LPGA Tour Qualifying tournament, so the NAPGT offered that opportunity. The finale to the tournament was dramatic.
Geoff Sisk of Marshfield wiped out a five-shot deficit over the final five holes yesterday and overtook
Dustin Cone of Bennington, Vt. Cone, who closed with a 70--206 to finish at 10 under, was seemingly in command until a triple-bogey 8 at the 14th was a followed by a bogey. Sisk went 3 under over his final four holes to shoot 68--205 and earn the $7,000 first-place prize.
Clint Deibert of Doylestown, Pa., (67--207) was third, while Andover's
Rob Oppenheim (68--209) was fourth.
With matching 1-under 69s at Worcester CC, Tom Tobey of Bay Pointe CC and John Rainone of North Kingstown Muni shared low honors in the third tournament on the Ahead Golf Stroke Play series for NEPGA members. Chip Johnson of Hatherly CC shot 70 to finish third, while Troy Pare of Wannamoisett CC was fourth. Bob Miller of Yarmouth Port shot 70 to squeeze out a one-stroke victory in a NEPGA senior tournament at Poquoy Brook GC in Lakeville. Bob Giusti of the Country Club of Halifax and Paul Parajeckas of Pleasant Valley shared second.
Amateurs
Brother act
It's been quite a two-week run for the Paladino boys from Kensington, Conn. One week after his brother,
Cody, made it to the finals of the US Amateur Public Links Championship,
Brent Paladino scored a two-shot win in the rain-shortened New England Amateur at The Quechee Club in Vermont. Having opened with a 5-under 67, Brent put up a second-round 69 to get to 8-under 136, two ahead of Marlborough CC's
Frank Vana Jr., and three clear of
Brendon Ray of Walpole CC and
Evan Beirne of New Haven CC. When the third round was rained out, Brent -- a junior at William & Mary -- was declared the winner. A week earlier, he had made it to the second round of match play in the USAPL, a tournament that saw Cody, who will be a freshman at Baylor, march into the finals before losing. At the New England Amateur, Cody finished joint 11th.
Tim Strout of Nashua, a junior at the University of Connecticut, rolled to a 5-and-4 win over Mark Stevens of Concord to capture the 104th New Hampshire State Amateur at Lake Winnipesaukee GC in New Durham.
Rick Lewis of Waltham shot 73 to score a four-stroke victory in a Boston Amateur Golf Society tournament at Braintree Municipal.
At a Tour of Greater Boston tournament at Wachusett CC, Michael Matonis of Milton and Jim Deschamps of Lunenberg each shot 80 to share first.
Scott Eddy of Plymouth finished 12th in the US Deaf Championships at St. Louis last week. Kevin Hall of Ohio won with a four-round tournament-record 12-under 276.
Brendon Ray will team with his father Brian and try to defend their title at the 36th annual Concord Invitational Fourball at Concord CC. The tournament will be held Aug. 3-4 and four-time champs Doug Clapp and Bob Malcolm will be among the stellar teams in the field. Other former champions who'll be teeing it up include John Dixon, Ken Oppenheim, and Dave Satterfield. The Tarlow Invitational is set for Aug. 27-28 at Thorny Lea GC in Brockton, a 36-hole medal event that will feature divisions for men and seniors (handicaps of 4.0 or less) and women (12.0 or less). Women
Carner onboard
World Golf Hall of Fame member JoAnne Carner is the latest to commit to the BJ's Charity Championship, scheduled for Aug. 3-5 at Granite Links GC in Quincy. Carner will team with Dale Eggeling in the best-ball team format that will bring together some of the great names in LPGA Tour history. Jane Blalock, who serves as president of the Legends Tour, will be paired with Mieko Nomura, while Sally Little also committed to the event and will play alongside Patti Rizzo. Antonio Grillo of Martha's Vineyard shot 79-77 and missed the cut. At the US Junior Girls at Tacoma Country & Golf Club in Lakewood, Wash.,
Brittany Altomare of Shrewsbury made the cut with rounds of 72-73, good for a share of 25th place, but lost in 21 holes to
Kristen Park of Buena Park, Calif., in the round of 32.
Brittany Weddell of Buzzard's Bay (77-78) missed the cut, as did
Trace Martin of Tyngsboro (77-80),

Michael Kania of Haverford, Pa., (68-144) in the AJGA Fidelity Investments Classic at Tedesco CC in Marblehead.
Garrett Arnold of Concord is one of three players tied at 145 entering today's final round. During another busy stretch of NEPGA Titleist Junior Tour events,
Laura Berman of Phoenix provided a highlight with three victories in the girls' 14-18 division. Some of the other winners: At Bedrock GC,
Matt Breault of Hooksett, N.H., (boys' 18-18); and
Stephen Price of Medway and
