Last year: Charles Howell won for the first time since 2002, making three clutch pars in a playoff for a dramatic victory over Phil Mickelson. Howell had nine runner-up finishes since winning the now-defunct Michelob Championship.
Last week: Steve Lowery won the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am for his third PGA Tour title and first in more than seven years, beating Vijay Singh with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff. At 47, Lowery is the oldest winner in tournament history.
Of note: Tiger Woods is skipping his hometown tournament. He will return next week for The Accenture Match Play Championship in Tucson . . . Mickelson is playing for the fourth straight week. He missed the cut at Pebble Beach after losing a playoff to J.B. Holmes in the FBR Open . . . Seventeen of the top 20 players in the world are in the field, with the top-ranked Woods missing along with No. 4 Ernie Els and No. 13 Henrik Stenson. Adam Scott, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Paul Casey, Retief Goosen, and Luke Donald are making their first PGA Tour starts of the season . . . Mike Weir swept the 2003-04 titles . . . Rory Sabbatini won in 2006 . . . Ben Hogan stamped the course as "Hogan's Alley" with three victories in 17 months - the 1947 and '48 Los Angeles Opens and '48 US Open . . . Steve Elkington won the 1995 PGA at Riviera, beating Colin Montgomerie in a playoff . . . Fred Couples won in 1990 and '92, and was second in '93, '94, and '96.

Purse: $1.1 million. Winner's share: $165,000.
Television: Golf Channel (Today, 6:30-9 p.m.; tomorrow-Saturday, 1-3 a.m., 6:30-9 p.m.; Sunday, 1-3 a.m.).
Last year: Paula Creamer won the season-opening tournament for her first victory since 2005, holing a long birdie putt on the 17th hole to beat Julieta Granada by a stroke. Creamer also won the Tournament of Champions in November.
Last event: The Philippines' Jennifer Rosales and Dorothy Delasin won the Women's World Cup of Golf Jan. 20 in South Africa.
Of note: Michelle Wie will open the season next week in the Fields Open at Ko Olina . . . Annika Sorenstam is making her first appearance in the event, while top-ranked Lorena Ochoa is taking the week off. Creamer, Suzann Pettersen, Cristie Kerr, Morgan Pressel, Natalie Gulbis, Brittany Lincicome, and Pat Hurst also are in the field . . . Rosales won the inaugural event in 2005, beating Wie and Kerr by two strokes . . . South Korea's Joo Mi Kim won in 2006, beating Soo Young Moon in a playoff.

CHAMPIONS TOUR

Course: Quail West Golf Club (6,749 yards, par 72) at Naples, Fla.
Purse: $1.6 million. Winner's share: $240,000.
Television: Golf Channel (Tomorrow, 12:30-3 p.m.; Saturday, 3-5 a.m., 1-4 p.m., 10 p.m.-midnight; Sunday, 1-4 p.m., 10 p.m.-midnight).
Last year: Bobby Wadkins won his fourth Champions Tour title, holing a 13-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a one-stroke victory over Allen Doyle.
Last week: Scott Hoch won the Allianz Championship in Boca Raton, Fla., for his second Champions Tour title. The 11-time PGA Tour winner birdied five of the final eight holes for a one-stroke victory over Brad Bryant and Bruce Lietzke.
Of note: Wadkins tied for fourth last week, his best finish since his victory last year at Quail West . . . Loren Roberts won in 2006 at TwinEagles to become the first Champions Tour player to open a season with three straight victories . . . Hale Irwin won in 1997 at Bay Colony and 2002 at TwinEagles.
