Courses
Ready to tee off?

With most of the snow having been melted for several weeks, courses in and around Greater Boston - and certainly just about everywhere south of Boston and all over Cape Cod - have opened for play. To determine if the place you want to play has opened, you can go to mgalinks.org, click on "member clubs," then click on various areas to get a list of courses, phone numbers, and websites.

Pros
A first for Peters

Pembroke native and former MGA Player of the Year Justin Peters broke through for his first win on the Gateway Tour in Florida as he went wire to wire at Martin Downs CC. Peters shot 68-70-70 -208 for a three-stroke win and the $9,160 check. Jamie Neher of Weston shot 214 to finish third. Peters then tried to ride the momentum into a spot in this week's PGA Tour stop in New Orleans, but he shot 74 in Monday's qualifier and fell short.

The Hooters Tour will tee it up today in Lauderhill, Fla., and the field will include Andy Morse of Needham, Rob Oppenheim of Andover, Michael Welch of North Quincy, and Jim Renner of Plainville.

Give credit to the folks at the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America for being right on with their annual honor for distinguished service. It went to one of the finest, Don Hearn, whose devotion to his work has long been admired by his colleagues. Having been introduced to the game at Woburn CC, Hearn has worked at Lexington GC, Weston GC, and Vesper CC, and he has found time to serve as president of both the GCSAA and New England Golf Course Superintendents Association.

Mass. Golf Association executive director Joe Sprague Jr., was among a group of five who were inducted into the Rhode Island Golf Association Hall of Fame. At that same dinner, Paul Quigley was honored as the RIGA Senior Player of the Year.
