Pros
Dwyer heats up
Dan Dwyer of Bass Rocks GC used a frontside 33 to shoot 2-under 70 to post a one-stroke victory in the NEPGA's Hudson Cup at Duxbury Yacht Club. Jim Salinetti of Newport CC finished second, while four players tied for third at 73 - Jim Burke of Leo J. Martin, Todd Cook of Tedesco, Stephen Colt of Vineyard GC, and Lee Dion of the Hyannisport Club.

Bob Green secured a two-stroke victory after shooting 72 in an NEPGA Senior Chapter tournament at his home course, Tedesco CC. Lou Katsos of Blue Hills finished second, while Chuck Frithsen of Golf Country was third with a 76.

Tom Johnson fired a 4-under 68 for a three-stroke win over Rusty Gunnarson in a Cape Cod Pro-Am at Pocasset GC. Jeff Dantas and Bill Kay tied for third with 72s.

One week after winning a Gateway Tour tournament, Jamie Neher of Weston shot 70-75-67 to finish second in Jensen Beach, Fla. Former Boston College golfer Tim Connors was sixth and Justin Peters of Pembroke was seventh.

Amateurs
McKee, Pierce roll
It was a case of home, sweet home for Kevin McKee and David Pierce as the club members roared to rounds of 69-67 to win the annual Cronin Memorial at the Country Club of Halifax. Jay Pappas and Dan Falcucci (70-70) finished second, four shots back, and Jeff Johnson and Ken Wood (72-69) were third. Paul Mahoney of Wollaston GC secured a rather remarkable achievement by teaming with Jim D'Ambrose to shoot 74-67 to win the Lambert Division; he had been on the winning team in that division when the Cronin debuted in 1979.

With a round of 74, Paul Mitchell of Roslindale scored a three-stroke victory in a Boston Amateur Golf Society tournament at Sandy Burr in Wayland. At Newport National in Rhode Island, Rich Bracker of Seekonk shot 77 for a one-stroke victory. In the 36-hole Cape Cod Spring Championship at Dennis Pines and Bayberry Hills, Glenn Watson shot 160 to edge Tom Dromgoole by a stroke.

David Markuson shot 78 to score a one-stroke victory in a Tour of Greater Boston tournament at Sandy Burr.

Colleges
Poutre moves on

University of Hartford men's coach William Poutre has stepped down to take a similar job with Long Beach State. A former CEO of Prime Financial, Poutre was named America East Coach of the Year after winning conference championships in 2006 and 2007. Poutre, who played for the Hawks, is a 1988 graduate of Hartford. He also graduated from the MIT School of Management.

Middlebury rolled to an eight-stroke victory over the host team in the Williams Spring Invitational at Taconic GC in Williamstown. Medalist honors were captured by Hayley Milbourn of Amherst, who shot 80-74.

Sacred Heart's Patrick Fillian shot three consecutive 71s to finish second and lead his team to victory in the Northeast Conference Championship in Hershey, Pa. Central Connecticut was third.

The University of Rhode Island finished third in the Atlantic 10 Championship in Orlando, Fla. Mark Stevens, a sophomore from Concord, N.H., shot 70-71-73 to share eighth place as the Rams' leading scorer.

Navy rolled to the Patriot League championship in Bethlehem, Pa. Senior Matt Czarnecki shot 78-80-78 to finish tied for seventh and help Holy Cross get into fourth place.

At the Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville, Va., North Reading's Evan Harmeling, a freshman at Princeton, shot 69-73 to finish tied for fifth.

Sophomore Dave McAndrew of Barrington, R.I., finished the season with the lowest stroke average (73.2) for the Stetson University Hatters.

Tournaments
Senior season
The New England Senior Tour will begin its 2008 season today with a tournament at Townsend Ridge CC. Both professionals and amateurs over the age of 40 will compete in a circuit dedicated to the memory of Richard "Buddy" Young, the onetime director of the New England PGA and South African PGA. There will also be tournaments at Holden Hills CC in Worcester (May 15), Webhannet GC in Kennebunk Beach, Maine (May 20), Bay Pointe CC in Onset (May 22), and Atkinson Resort & CC in Atkinson, N.H. The 41st annual Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament will open July 30 at Wollaston GC in Milton, then shift to Framingham CC the next day, before winding down with its traditional final round at Woodland GC in Newton. There will be three divisions - championship, seniors, and a limited field for women. For information, call 774-430-9090.

Thorny Lea GC in Brockton will once again host one of the area's premier amateur tournaments, the Tarlow Invitational. Scheduled for Aug. 25-26, applications are available by calling the pro shop (508-586-2171) or via the club website, thornyleagc.com. There will be three divisions - men's, women's, and seniors.

Women
Norfolk on horizon
The Norfolk County Two-Ball Tournament is scheduled for June 6 at Presidents GC in North Quincy. Teams will be assigned to their respective flights based on total handicaps. The cost is $120 per team, which includes green fees, lunch, and prizes. Entry forms, which are due June 4, are available at the pro shop.

People
McAdams signs on
Dave McAdams, formerly the assistant golf professional at Framingham CC, has been named operations coordinator of the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund. An alumnus of the Ouimet program, McAdams graduated from the University of Southern New Hampshire.

Once again, May will be free lesson month and golfers can secure 10 minutes from PGA of America members. Simply go to playgolfamerica.com, and find a professional in your area who is participating in the program, then call to set up a lesson.

Deutsche Bank has pledged its support with an endowment to the American Junior Golf Association's Ace Grant program, which has awarded $937,000 to provide competitive golf opportunities to more than 255 students over the years. The Deutsche Bank Championship Founders Cup for junior golfers will be held July 14 at TPC Boston in Norton.
