Tournaments
Hail to the chiefs
Phil Smith of Vesper CC in Tyngsboro may have successfully defended his title at the annual Norfolk County Classic at Presidents GC in North Quincy, but there were other winners, as well. With rounds of 73-71, Paul Murphy of Charles River CC was low senior, while Eric Daniel (71-76) once again posted the low score for a club member. In Division 2, Kevin Carozza of D.W. Courses
A new King
With its commercial and residential building project at the site of the former Colonial Golf Course ongoing, the owners of the property, National Development, have allowed the town of Lynnfield to operate what used to be the front nine. Renamed King Rail Reserve Golf Course, the nine holes will play to 3,420 yards and a par of 36, and it is up and running for the season. PGA professionals Don Lyons and Ross Coon will run the course. For information, call 781-334-2877.

Miscellany
For a good cause
Plans are underway for the seventh annual Mark Bavis Leadership Foundation Celebrity Golf Tournament that pays tribute to the memory of the Catholic Memorial and Boston University hockey player who was killed during the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. To be held once again at the Country Club of New Seabury in Mashpee, the festivities will include a night of comedy July 13, with a golf tournament the following day. An awards reception at the Popponesset Inn will be held following the golf. Proceeds will benefit the foundation, which awards scholarships to students in the area. For comedy night tickets, call Joe Finn at 617-755-3386. For sponsorship opportunities and golf information, call tournament director Merilyn Sullivan at 781-938-1700 or e-mail her at msullivan@eventususa.com.

People
Notable dropoff
In a US Open qualifier at Weathersfield CC in Connecticut, two notables were well off the pace - ex-tennis star Ivan Lendl shot 77 and former Mass. Amateur winner Andy Drohen struggled to an 89.

New England PGA officials announced its annual George S. Wemyss Award will go to Dennis Drinkwater, the CEO of Giant Glass, a longtime supporter of various NEPGA endeavors. The late Wemyss was the first executive director of the NEPGA.
