Mathew Goggin shot a 1-under-par 71 yesterday at the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio, which was good enough to build a three-shot lead as he tries to win his first PGA Tour event.

He was at 8-under 208, the highest 54-hole score at Jack Nicklaus's event since Greg Norman won a rain-shortened tournament in 1990 at even-par 216. Goggin has said since opening with a 65 that a first- and second-round lead didn't mean too much. And now?

"Expectations are rising," he said. "Three shots in front, I expect to win."

Former Masters champion Mike Weir matched the best round of the day, a bogey-free 68 that put him at 5-under 211 and in the final group with Goggin.

LPGA - Sophie Gustafson shot a 67 to push past Karrie Webb and take a six-stroke lead into the final round of the Ginn Tribute in Mount Pleasant, S.C. Tournament host Annika Sorenstam, meanwhile, continued to struggle at her namesake event with a 75 -213.

Champions - Nick Price shot a 5-under 66 for a one-shot lead after the second round of the Principal Charity Classic in West Des Moines, Iowa.

Ladies' European - Michelle Wie shot a 2-under 70 in the third round of the Ladies German Open in Munich to fall seven strokes behind leader Amy Wang, who had a course-record 63.

Curtis Cup - Former NCAA champion Stacy Lewis and Alison Walshe of Westford stayed perfect on the Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland, hanging on to win the final fourball match to give the Americans a 7 1/2-4 1/2 lead. The US team, which has won the Curtis Cup five straight times, needs 2 1/2 points today to retain the Cup.

Futures - Briana Vega of North Andover shot a 1-under 71 and trails leader Mindy Kim (72 -140) by two shots heading into the final round of the Aurora Health Care Championship in Lake Geneva, Wis.
