Joy for Connelly
Tara Joy Connelly (81-79) of Cohasset GC hung on to defeat Claire Sheldon (83-78) of The Country Club by one stroke in the WGAM's Baker Trophy at Eastward Ho! in Chatham. Marion Webster of The Kittansett Club (83-78) finished third.

Abenaqui CC in Rye, N.H., will host 108 players in the 52d annual New England Women's Golf Association Championship Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Joanne Catlin, the 2004 champion, and Natalie Galligan, the 1999 winner, will be in the field along with a host of current and former WGAM champions, such as Kerri Connolly, Courtney Dampolo, Mary Gale, Connelly, Karen Richardson, and Anne Marie Tobin.

Erin Hills CC, a heralded layout in Erin, Wis., which will host the US Amateur in 2011, got its first national exposure by holding this week's US Women's Amateur Public Links Championship. Brittany Altomare of Worcester (78-84), Brittany Weddell of Buzzards Bay (89-89), Johanna Dolle of Brookline (92-93), and Katelyn Poplawski of Williston, Vt. (87-80) qualified, but did not make it into match play.

Pros
Win for Wilkins
At the NEPGA Pro-Officer tournament at Prouts Neck CC in Scarborough, Maine, Daniel Wilkins of Laconia shot even-par 70 to score a two-stroke win over Frank Dully of Kernwood. Host pro Jennifer Webster was third with a 75. Peter Farley of North Andover teamed with Jack Stephenson to win low gross with a 69, while John Fields and Ira Zaleznick of Belmont shot 64 to win low net.

Dan Dwyer of Bass Rocks and Mark Spencer of Atkinson CC shot 69s to share low pro honors in an NEPGA Pro-Member at Haverhill CC. Rick Durocher of Concord CC was third at 71. Dwyer's team also shared low honors at 66 with one anchored by Mike Menery.

Tournaments
Mediate signs on
Fresh off of his US Open drama at Torrey Pines, Rocco Mediate has been added to the field for the CVS Charity Classic Monday and Tuesday at Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington. Mediate replaces Boo Weekley, who withdrew citing personal reasons.

Amateurs
Future stars
One of the country's outstanding tournaments, the Northeast Amateur, got underway yesterday at Wannamoisett CC in Rumford, R.I. The field includes former US Junior Amateur winner Kevin Tway, a standout at Oklahoma State who'll be joined in the field by his future college teammate, Peter Uihlein of Mattapoisett. Jon Curran of Hopkinton and Vanderbilt University, is also playing, as is perennial Massachusetts Golf Association Player of the Year Frank Vana.

In regional qualifiers for the PGA of America's McGladrey Amateur Championship, two teams came out of the competition at Pinehills GC in Plymouth, one from the Jones Course, one from the Nicklaus Course. David Gooding, George Gooding, and Chris Katralis were one winning team, which will be joined by John Tuffin of the Pinehills' pro staff, when they move on to the New England sectional final. The other winning team consisted of Michael Cooney, Tom Reilly, and Rick Monaghan, who'll be joined by Eric Zadorian, also of the Pinehills' staff. The sectional final will be held Aug. 14 at Turner Hill in Ipswich with the winning team going to the national event at Pinehurst in October. As a bonus, some proceeds from the qualifier went to the Ouimet Scholarship Fund.

In a Tour of Greater Boston tournament at Passaconaway CC in Litchfield, N.H., Adam Whitfield shot 72 to score a two-stroke victory. Mike Regan shot 82 to win at the Pines Course at the International in Bolton.

Johnathan Law of Wellesley and Jeff Mucciarone of Westwood shot 75s to share first place in a Boston Amateur Golf Society tournament at Kettle Brook in Paxton. At New England CC in Bellingham, Tom Dromgoole of Savin Hill won with a 78. In a better-ball team event at Olde Scotland Links in Bridgewater, Law and Chris Jones shot 67 to win.

Seniors
McCarthy tops
Myles McCarthy of South Windsor, Conn., shot 72 and held on for a one-stroke win in a New England Senior Tour tournament at Elmcrest CC. David Pernell of Windsor, Conn., was second, while Jay Dolan of Haines City, Fla., shot 74 to finish third.
