Amateurs
Qualified success
During the recent Mass. Public Links Championship qualifiers, few efforts were as sterling as Joe Cunningham's. Earning his spot into the MGA tournament at Far Corner GC in West Boxford, Cunningham had five birdies against just one bogey in a round of 4-under 68 to claim medalist honors by two strokes. The tournament is Aug. 11-12 at Blissful Meadows GC.

Juniors
Cincinnati-bound
Leif Jacobsen of Milton (71-74) edged Ian Thimble of Hyde Park (73-72) on the first playoff hole to win the NEPGA Junior Championship at Brookline GC. The victory earned Jacobsen a spot in the national PGA Junior Championship Aug. 13-16 at TPC River Bend in Cincinnati. Daniel Slavin of Waban had a 153 total for a six-stroke win in the 13-15 division. Tracy Martin of Tyngsboro shot 73-77 for a five-stroke win in the girls' 16-18 division.

A 99-player field is set for the Fidelity Investment Junior at The Bay Club at Mattapoisett, a 54-hole tournament that begins Tuesday. Juniors from 17 states and Canada will compete in this American Junior Golf Association tournament, among them being some of the area's top players - Max Campion of Brookline, Brad Cadigan of South Weymouth, Chase Lovett-Woodsum of Boston, and Martin to name a few.

Regan Simeone and Lauren Flynn combined for a 67 to win the WGAM Mowatt Trophy at Presidents GC in Quincy. Arianna Iapicca and Courtney Dampolo finished second at 71. In the junior-junior division, Karolyn Shieh, Michaela Abbott, and Megan Khang won with a 33, while Gabrielle Shieh, Erin Bugbee, and Katherine Cavanaugh had a 37 to take the mite division.

In an NEPGA Titleist Junior Tour tournament at Windham CC, Steve Geldart of Lexington shot 79 to earn a one-stroke victory in the boys' 16-18 division. Nathan Richard of Charlton (80) won the 12-13 division, Nicholas Pandelena of Atkinson, N.H., (76) the 14-15, and Anna Stepper of North Billerica (87) the girls' 14-18.

In the 14-15 category, Zachary Rothschild of Newton shot 81 to tie Daniel Slavin of Waban.

At Gardner Municipal, Colin Beaupre of Barre shot 1-under 70 to win the boys' 16-18 division. Matthew Michaud of Hingham (79) won the 12-13 category, and Damon Salo of New Ipswich, N.H., (75) the 14-15.

Women
Bowl business
Mary Gale of Bedrock GC and Joanne Catlin of Winchendon School GC combined to shoot 82 at Highfields Golf & Country Club and win the annual WGAM Curtis Bowl. The Gannon GC entry of Julie Lombara and Mary Hunt finished at 66 to take the net division.

Defending champion Claire Sheldon will be in the field Monday when the WGAM holds its 105th association championship at Salem CC in Peabody. It will be the sixth time the WGAM championship is played at Salem CC, and besides Sheldon, former winners who'll tee it up include Tara Joy Connelly, Anna Marie Tobin, Karen Richardson, and Tracy Welch.

Miscellany
Batter up
Deutsche Bank Championship officials will again coordinate their "Birdies for Charity" program, and the Arc of Northern Bristol County has signed on as a charitable beneficiary. Last year, proceeds topped $300,000 and 23 New England charities benefited. To participate, you need to guess how many birdies will be made during the tournament, and if you are correct, you could win the grand prize: Red Sox season tickets for 2009.
