Sarah Whitney of Hingham is hoping more girls will grow to love golf as much as she does.

On Aug. 13, the South Shore Girls Junior Invitational will be held at the South Shore Country Club in Hingham. The tournament is a fund-raiser for the Girls Club of Hingham at South Shore Country Club. More than 80 girls, ages 5 to 14, participate on Mondays in clinics that teach golf rules, etiquette, and techniques.

Whitney, who will begin her sophomore golf season at the College of William and Mary this fall, teamed up with Holly Taylor to help begin the clinic.

The invitational will feature a division for girls 14 to 18 years old. The entry fee is $40 for 18 holes. For girls 13 and under, it is $25 to enter for nine holes. The fee includes lunch and prizes for each participant.

Entries should be turned in by Aug. 10; checks should be sent to the South Shore Country Club.

Brockton's Gators in AAU nationals

The Bay State Gators girls 14-year-old basketball team will participate in the Girls National AAU Championship tournament in Hampton Roads, Va., Sunday through July 26.

The Brockton-based Gators, formed last year, qualified for the national tournament by capturing a silver medal in a regional tournament in New Hampshire recently. In order to offset travel costs, the team is looking for donations. For more information, e-mail baystategatorsbsg@hotmail.com.

Bridgewater boys win soccer title

The Bridgewater under-18 boys' soccer team claimed the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions title last month in Lancaster. It was just the second title in the 36-year history of the Bridgewater Youth Soccer Association.

The squad defeated Carver, 3-1, in the semifinals and then stopped Woburn, 2-1, in the final to capture the club's first title in 24 years.

The tournament was sponsored by Mass Youth Soccer.

Bridgewater qualified for the tournament by winning the South Shore Soccer League title and then ripped off five straight tournament wins, outscoring its foes, 42-12, to finish 14-0-1 overall.

The team was invited to participate in the New England Revolution's night of champions before the Revs' match last night vs. Pachuca in the SuperLiga tournament at Gillette Stadium.

Jack Perry and Noel Soccorso coached the under-18 team, which included players from Bridgewater-Raynham and Cardinal Spellman high schools, among others.

The team included: Justin Biela, Matt Boudreau, Austin Chaffee, Andrew Chambers, Greg Crotty, Ryan Garcia, Matt Goodell, Ryan Ledin, Dimitri Loucagos, John Madden, Brendan Martin, Conor McManus, Mark Mullaney, Seamus Murtagh, Justin Perry, Joe Sanford, Justin Soccorso, and Joe Vella.

Sean Morris joins Boston Cannons

Marshfield native Sean Morris is displaying his lacrosse skills close to home this summer. In May, Morris was acquired by the Boston Cannons from the Chicago Machine in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2008 MLL Collegiate Draft.

Morris is a 2006 graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In his five games, the 5-foot-9-inch, 190-pound attack collected 6 goals and 11 assists for the Cannons, who were 4-3-1 entering this week.

He finished his career at UMass with a 40-game scoring streak and was honored as the New England Player of the Year as a senior.
