Rain was the big winner in local tournaments yesterday as powerful, fast-moving storms played havoc with a number of events.
The Women's Golf Association of Massachusetts' Association Championship at Salem Country Club in Peabody was able to get in three of the semifinal matches, but the one between Sarah Whitney and Kerri Connolly was all square through 18 holes when it had to be called. The players will return this morning to complete the match.
In the quarterfinal matches that were completed, Pam Kuong of Charles River CC ousted defending champion Claire Sheldon of The Country Club, 2 and 1; Tara Joy-Connelly of Cohasset CC beat Lisa Anderson of Ferncroft, 5 and 4; and Marion McInerney of Charles River got past Karen Richardson of Haverhill CC, 3 and 2.
New England Amateur - At Charles River CC, half the field failed to finish second-round action. Matt Broome of Barrington, R.I., a sophomore at Furman, was one of those who completed his assignment, shooting a crisp 4-under 66 to take the clubhouse lead at 3-under 137. Cody Larson (68) sits one shot behind, while Larry Rentz of Hingham (72) is at 2-over 142.
Round 2 will be completed this morning, after which the field will be reduced to the low 40 and ties. The tournament has been shortened to a 54-hole event.
AJGA - Blake Morris of Waterbury, Conn., shot 2-under 69 to push to 3-under 139 and open a two-stroke lead through two rounds of the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic at the Bay Club at Mattapoisett. Kramer Hickok of Plano, Texas, (71 -141) is second, Eddie Hjerpe of Barrington, R.I. (70 -142) sits third, while Max Campion of Brookline (74 -143) is among three tied for fourth.
Olivia Chang of San Lorenzo, Calif., shot 71 and at 144 has a three-stroke lead over Joy Kim (74) entering today's final round.
New England Open qualifier - Jim Renner of Plainville and Matthew Torrance of East Lyme, Conn., each fired 5-under 67s at Vesper CC to tie for medalist honors as nine players qualified for the tournament Sept. 10-12 at Lake Winnipesaukee GC. Mark Mangion of Bradford had 71 to tie for third.
US Junior Amateur - Richard Werenski of South Hadley won his first-round match, 3 and 1, at Shoal Creek, Ala. Werenski had qualified on the strength of a 74-69 -143 effort that left him tied for fourth. Brad Cadigan of South Weymouth missed match play by a stroke. James Pleat of Nashua, N.H., and Nichola Erlichman of Shrewsbury also missed the cut.
US Girls' Junior - At Hartford (Conn.) GC, competitors dodged rain all day, but among the matches that did get played, medalist Lisa McCloskey of Montgomery, Texas, rolled to victory, as did Madison Pressel, sister of Morgan. Alexis Thompson, at 13 already a two-time US Women's Open participant, also won her match, but Daniela Lendl, daughter of tennis great Ivan, got upended after having finished tied for seventh in qualifying.![]()
