Pros
Warren, Welch rule
Less than a week after his torrid scores of 67-66 left him second in the New Hampshire Open, Shawn Warren went farther north (geographically) and deeper south (scorewise) to win the 42d annual Bangor Open. With rounds of 64-66 -130, Warren squeezed out a one-stroke win over Eric Egloff (67-64) to grab the $11,000 first-place prize. Joe Cioe shot 67-66 -133 to finish third, with Michael Carbone (66-68 - 134) of Brewster fourth.

Setting the pace at the New Hampshire Open at North Conway CC was Michael Welch of North Quincy, his rounds of 63-65 giving him a five-stroke decision over Warren.

Todd Scarafoni of Mount Pleasant CC shot 1-under 69 to win an NEPGA Massachusetts Chapter Pro-Am at Whitinsville GC. Scott Hickey of Norton CC and Chuck Frithsen of Golf Country tied for second, one stroke back. Frithsen anchored a team that shot 65-66 using one gross and one net score to record a two-stroke win.

Women
McDonald stopped
Mary Mulcahy, a 14-year-old freshman-to-be at Scituate High School, put an end to one of the South Shore's most remarkable stories when she upended Laura Jean McDonald to win the women's championship at Hatherly Country Club. McDonald had reigned for 24 consecutive years before her 167 total was three behind Mulcahy's 81-83 effort.

Jaclyn Sweeney preceded her appearance in a Futures Tour stop in Concord, N.H., by shooting 68 to take medalist honors in a US Women's Amateur qualifier in Roswell, Ga. In a qualifier at Rhode Island CC, Sarah Whitney of Hingham shot 74 to finish second and punch her ticket to the US Women's Amateur, which gets underway Monday at Eugene CC in Oregon.

At the end of a long, wet week at Hartford GC, it was yet another story of youthful wonders as 13-year-old Alexis Thompson won the US Girls' Junior championship. Already a two-time participant in the US Women's Open, Thompson is the second-youngest winner of the tournament, just two months older than Aree Song. She defeated Karen Chung, 5 and 4, to take the title. Chung, also 13, advanced to the final by beating Kristina Wong, 1-up, in a tournament-record long 26 holes Saturday.

Jan Waniga of Wilbraham (94) squeezed out a one-stroke victory in the WGAM Class C Senior Championship. Candy Heath (95) of South Shore CC took Class D, and Cyndi Kim of Blue Hill CC shared the Class E title with Brenda Moran of Braintree Municipal. The tournaments were held at Segregansett CC.

Entry forms are available at the Presidents GC pro shop for the Norfolk County Women's Classic, scheduled for Aug. 23. The 18-hole stroke-play tournament will feature three divisions, with net and gross prizes in each. Call 617-328-3444, ext. 305, for information.

Seniors
Perez feels at home

When he moved from Massachusetts, Ed Fletcher took his passion for golf with him. The former state amateur champion recently advanced to the quarterfinals of the Florida Senior Amateur in Ocala, before losing, 3 and 2.
